The present study aimed to investigate Brazilian mothers' socialization goals. The participants in the study were 349 primiparous mothers, whose ages ranged from 17 to 47 years (mean = 26.6 years), who had children aged between 1 and 48 months (mean = 16.4 months). The families were living in seven different cities representing each of the five geographical regions of the country. A scale to evaluate the families' socio-economic status and an interview about socialization goals were used. The answers were coded in five categories defined in previous studies: self-maximization, self-control, lovingness, proper demeanor, and decency. Comparison of the means showed that Brazilian mothers gave more emphasis to self-maximization and proper demeanor than to the other categories, presenting a pattern that fosters the development of children's autonomous-relational selves. The intracultural variation found was related to the different cities studied. GLM results showed main effects of both city size and mothers' educational level on their socialization goals. These findings contribute to the understanding of characteristics of socialization goals related with autonomy and sociocentrism.

ResumoA presente pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar a correlação entre as crenças e práticas de cuidado materno em diferentes contextos no município de Itajaí. Participaram da pesquisa setenta e sete mães que responderam a um questionário. Através da análise dos dados constatou-se que: mães da zona urbana, com escolaridade superior, valorizaram mais o fator Estimulação, enquanto mães da zona urbana, com baixa escolaridade, se destacaram em relação ao fator Disciplina; o tempo que as mães passavam com os filhos na zona rural foi significativamente maior em comparação com mães dos outros grupos; e mães da zona urbana com baixa escolaridade relataram que seus filhos brincavam significativamente mais com outras crianças. Portanto, concluise que crenças e práticas de cuidado materno apresentam configurações diferentes em função do contexto em que as mães residem. AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation of the beliefs and practices of maternal care in rural and urban contexts in the city of Itajaí, SC. Seventy-seven mothers were asked to participate in the study by filling in a questionnaire. The following points were observed through the analysis of the results: Urban mothers with high educational level attributed significantly more value to the factor of stimulation, whereas urban mothers with a lower educational level gave more importance to the factor of discipline. The amount of time that mothers spent with their children in the countryside was significantly greater in relation to mothers in the other group. Urban mothers of lower educational level said that their children played significantly more with other children. Therefore, it was concluded that practical beliefs and maternal care practices show different configurations regarding the contexts the mothers dwelling. O comportamento parental, comum no ser humano, tem importante função adaptativa no sentido de promover a sobrevivência dos indivíduos e da espécie humana de modo geral. No entanto, existem especificidades nesse cuidado que dependem da cultura e do contexto familiar. O cuidado parental foi abordado enfatizando-se seu caráter interacionista, com relação a seus aspectos biológicos e culturais. Além das especificidades do papel dos pais no comportamento parental, foram discutidas as características das crianças que influenciam neste cuidado. Na última seção do artigo foram focalizadas as características do cuidado paterno e sua influência no desenvolvimento infantil. Concluiu-se o cuidado parental tem especificidades em relação ao comportamento da mãe e do pai, que podem ser explicadas pelas perspectivas biológicas e culturais. Abstract:This paper aims to discuss the parental care and the role of the father in child development in early years, from the perspective of evolutionary psychology. The parental care was discussed emphasizing its characteristic of interaction, with respect to biological and cultural aspects. In addition to the role of parents in parental behavior, it was discussed the characteristics of children that influence the parental care. In the last section of the article, the focus was on the role of the father in parental care and its influence on child development. It has been concluded that parental care is specific to the behavior of the mother and father, which can be explained by biological and cultural perspectives. In this way, to understand the parental behavior is necessary to consider both the phylogenetic history of human species and also the socio-historical context where the family is inserted.

A brincadeira é uma atividade presente na vida de crianças em diversas culturas, possuindo papel importante no desenvolvimento das mesmas. Apesar disso, tal importância nem sempre é reconhecida pelos adultos, os quais priorizam na educação das crianças aspectos cognitivos formais e apresentam uma dificuldade em visualizar a relação existente entre brincadeira e desenvolvimento. A psicologia evolucionista tem voltado seu olhar para o brincar por este caracterizar-se como adaptado e adaptativo da espécie, contendo aspectos filogenéticos e ontogenéticos. Tal abordagem busca estudar as possíveis relações entre cultura e filogênese no desenvolvimento deste comportamento. Dessa forma o objetivo deste trabalho foi apresentar o brincar a partir do referencial teórico da psicologia evolucionista, bem como seu conceito e suas características. Além disso, são apresentadas as relações entre o brincar, os tipos de brincadeira e as diferenças de gênero. A brinquedoteca é apresentada como um possível espaço no qual esse comportamento pode ser estimulado e valorizado.

Resumen. . A presente pesquisa visa a caracterizar o relacionamento conjugal e as táticas de resolução de conflito entre casais. Participaram 104 casais de um estado no Sul do Brasil, perfazendo o total de 208 respondentes. A média de idade das mulheres foi de 33.27 anos e dos homens 36.45 anos. O tempo de união conjugal variou de um ano a 27 anos, sendo a média 10.74. Os instrumentos utilizados foram: questionário de caracterização do relacionamento conjugal e Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2). Os resultados obtidos, por meio de análises estatísticas, sugerem que a maioria dos casais considera vivenciar relacionamento conjugal harmônico, com predomínio de estratégias de negociação em casos de emergência de conflitos conjugais. Entretanto, atitudes que envolvem agressão psicológica também apareceram como formas de resolução de conflitos. Os resultados contribuem para elucidar a dinâmica inter-relacional de casamentos saudáveis. Palabras clave: Relações Conjugais; Conflito Conjugal; Relacionamento Interpessoal.Abstract. This research aims to characterize the marital relationship and tactics of conflict resolution between couples. The participants were 104 couples from a state located in the south of Brazil, totaling 208 respondents. The average age of the women was 33.27 years old and men 36.45. The time of conjugal union ranged from one year to 27 years and the average was 10.74. The measurements used were: a questionnaire to characterize the marital relationship and the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2). The results obtained by means of statistical analyzes suggest that most couples consider to experience a harmonic conjugal relationship with preponderance of negotiation strategies in emergency cases of marital conflict. However, attitudes involving psychological aggression also appeared as forms of conflict resolution. The results contribute to elucidate the inter-relational dynamics of healthy marriages.

The relation between attachment and parental practices with externalizing (aggression and delinquency) and internalizing (social withdrawal and anxiety/depression) behavioral problems were investigated in this study. Participants were 289 children (from 9 to 12 years old) and 205 caregivers who answered distinct questionnaires: the formers on attachment and the later on parental practices. Results indicated that poor maternal attachment relationships, high levels of parental rejection and being a boy predicted aggression. Moreover, poor paternal attachment and father's low education predicted social withdrawal. Finally, parental rejection was marginally associated with anxiety/depression. The results reinforce, partially, the existing literature and help to understand the complex relationship between parenting and behavioral problems.

RESUMO. Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar a relação de apego entre crianças institucionalizadas que vivem em situação de abrigo. Participaram do estudo quatorze crianças de ambos os sexos, com idades compreendidas entre 3 e 9 anos. Os dados foram coletados através da técnica de observação do sujeito focal. Os principais resultados foram: a) os irmãos mais velhos demonstraram-se responsivos às solicitações de afeto e cuidado em relação aos irmãos mais novos; foi registrada interação significativa entre as meninas mais velhas com os meninos mais novos; b) a brincadeira social mostrou ser uma situação favorável ao estabelecimento das interações afetivas; c) a imagem da família aparece representada pela figura materna. Conclui-se que, na falta de um adulto significativo, crianças em situação de abrigo acabam formando relações de apego umas com as outras e que a rede de apoio social representa um importante aspecto na resiliência destas crianças.

This study aimed to investigate characteristics of Brazilian mothers' beliefs system, in the dimensions of autonomy and interdependence. A group of 600 women, half from state capitals and half from small towns, participated in the study. They were individually interviewed with Scales of Allocentrism, Beliefs about Parental Practices and Socialization Goals. Paired and Independent samples t tests and Multivariate GLM were performed. The results indicate that although mothers from both contexts value autonomy, mothers inhabiting small towns considered the relational dimension as the most important; whereas mothers inhabiting capitals valued equally both dimensions, either in their beliefs about practices or in the socialization goals for their children. Mothers from small towns have a higher mean score for allocentrism than mothers living in capitals. Thus, place of residence proved to be a relevant variable in the modulation of maternal beliefs. Educational level was not a significant factor in the variables considered and with this group of mothers. The study results are discussed in terms of their contribution to the understanding of the complex relationship between dimensions of autonomy and interdependence in mothers' beliefs system.
