The present study aimed to investigate Brazilian mothers' socialization goals. The participants in the study were 349 primiparous mothers, whose ages ranged from 17 to 47 years (mean = 26.6 years), who had children aged between 1 and 48 months (mean = 16.4 months). The families were living in seven different cities representing each of the five geographical regions of the country. A scale to evaluate the families' socio-economic status and an interview about socialization goals were used. The answers were coded in five categories defined in previous studies: self-maximization, self-control, lovingness, proper demeanor, and decency. Comparison of the means showed that Brazilian mothers gave more emphasis to self-maximization and proper demeanor than to the other categories, presenting a pattern that fosters the development of children's autonomous-relational selves. The intracultural variation found was related to the different cities studied. GLM results showed main effects of both city size and mothers' educational level on their socialization goals. These findings contribute to the understanding of characteristics of socialization goals related with autonomy and sociocentrism.
Although studies of parenting cognitions and practices across cultures have increased systematically in the last years, research specifically on parents' knowledge of childrearing and child development remains very little frequent in non-U.S. settings. In Brazil this issue is still underresearched. This study addressed two main questions: What do Brazilian mothers know about childrearing and child development? How does this knowledge vary with their socioeconomic status and education in particular? A Brazilian version of the Knowledge of Infant Development Inventory (KIDI) was administered to a sample of 64 primiparous mothers, and data about the family's socioeconomic status were collected. Relations of SES and some of its components to parents' knowledge about childrearing and child development were then analyzed. The mean total correct score obtained by the Brazilian mothers on the KIDI was lower than the mean score obtained by the American mothers. There were no differences between KIDI scores obtained by mothers of boys and mothers of girls. Mothers' education was the best predictor of the KIDI. This study gives support to the view that differences in parenting knowledge are ascribable primarily to variation in educational attainment, a principal indicator of SES, and has implications for the development of parental educational programs.Key words: parental knowledge; socioeconomic status; primiparous mothers ResumoStatus socioeconômico na pesquisa psicológica brasileira: II. status socioeconômico e conhecimento parental.
Different Perspectives on the Parent-Infant/Child Interaction Analysis AbstractThe study of corresponding levels of analysis in the parent-infant/child interaction may lead us to a common language and shared concepts, that in turn will hopefully aid in the prolific exchanges among researchers from various theoretical and methodological backgrounds. The authors of this article represent some of the most prominent research teams of Brazil engaged in the study of parent-infant/child interaction. Their various perspectives are presented, as are their points of agreement and disagreement, with the purpose of demonstrating both the complexity and the diversity of approaches to the parent-infant/child interactions and their role in development. Although there is no consensual definition of interaction, there is a tendency of the authors to consider the question of reciprocal actions, co-construction, and bidirectionality. Granting that there is a trend to focus on manifested behavior and interaction, there is also a clear awareness that implicit transactions and social representations must be studied through rigorous methodological procedures, insofar as they influence interactions. It is hoped that, as these discussions progress, the ideas proposed herein will be...
This study aimed to investigate characteristics of Brazilian mothers' beliefs system, in the dimensions of autonomy and interdependence. A group of 600 women, half from state capitals and half from small towns, participated in the study. They were individually interviewed with Scales of Allocentrism, Beliefs about Parental Practices and Socialization Goals. Paired and Independent samples t tests and Multivariate GLM were performed. The results indicate that although mothers from both contexts value autonomy, mothers inhabiting small towns considered the relational dimension as the most important; whereas mothers inhabiting capitals valued equally both dimensions, either in their beliefs about practices or in the socialization goals for their children. Mothers from small towns have a higher mean score for allocentrism than mothers living in capitals. Thus, place of residence proved to be a relevant variable in the modulation of maternal beliefs. Educational level was not a significant factor in the variables considered and with this group of mothers. The study results are discussed in terms of their contribution to the understanding of the complex relationship between dimensions of autonomy and interdependence in mothers' beliefs system.
We compared Future Discounting (FD, preference for smaller, sooner rewards over larger, later ones) by 160 Brazilian youth (16–30 years old; 71 women and 89 men). University students and slum‐dwelling (favela) youth were compared. Participants completed a monetary FD task, a scale of youngsters′ view of their neighborhood, and self‐reported exposure to violence (EV). Favela youth discounted the future more than students; favela men more than women. However, university women discounted more than men, an unexpected result. Predicted differences in the participants′ view of their neighborhood between the two groups were observed. The interaction context × EV scores was a significant predictor of FD. These youth have apparently adjusted trade‐offs between the short and long term in a context‐sensitive, adaptive manner.
Comportamentos cooperativos e competitivos serão discutidos a partir dessas perspectivas.Palavras-chave: psicologia evolucionista; cognição; emoção; ação. Reason, Emotion and Action in Scene:Human Mind from an Evolutionary Perspective ABSTRACT -Biological and cultural aspects, psychological and neurological aspects, emotional and rational aspects were privileged separately in different times and perspectives -the vision of mind was sometimes focused and sometimes relegated to the black box of the psychological science. Presently, integration between mind and human behavior is sought. Mind is seen as an object of science and a product of the natural selection in the evolution of Homo sapiens. Our essay presents a brief history of the main transformations in the conception of mind and of evolutionary models of mind which contemplate reason, emotion and human actions. An effort is made to integrate and discuss the research evidence from various disciplines (anthropology, ethology, primatology, and psychology), offering an evolutionary comprehension of the human mind, of its phylogeny and ontogeny. Cooperative and competitive behavior are discussed within such framework.Key words: evolutionary psychology; cognition; emotion; action.
