Slightly saline water increases the larviculture efficiency of freshwater Neotropical fishAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of slightly saline water in an intensive larviculture of tambaqui, matrinxã, apaiari, and piau, during the initial days of active feeding. Larvae were reared in artificial saline water, at concentrations from 0 (freshwater) to 14 g L -1 NaCl (at a 2.0 g L -1 ), and fed with two portions of Artemia nauplii, following a specific protocol for each species, in a completely randomized design, with 3 replicates. Tambaqui, matrinxã and apaiari larvae can be reared at saline concentrations till 2 g L -1 without impairing growth and survival. Piau larvae were more tolerant and endured saline water until 4 g L -1 . At saline concentrations above that, fish mortality increased and reached 100% at 6 g L -1 , for matrinxã and apaiari, and at 10 g L -1, for tambaqui. Saline water at 2 g L -1 provided a higher survival for matrinxã, and higher growth for tambaqui, apaiari and piau. These last two species showed a better growth performance with the highest quantity of nauplii. Slightly saline water at 2 g L -1 is beneficial to these studied species, as it optimizes larval growth potential and the use of Artemia nauplii as live food.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of lutein supplementation on growth, survival and skin pigmentation for goldfish juveniles. Four diets enriched with different carotenoid sources (lutein, astaxanthin, canthaxanthin and a combination of lutein and canthaxanthin) were compared to a control diet without carotenoid supplementation. The carotenoid inclusion level was standardized at 50 mg kg‐1 in all treatments. 240 goldfish juveniles (1.070.57 g) were cultivated in 30 aquariums (30L) during 84 days. The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments and six replicates. The dietary inclusion of carotenoid pigments did not affect the growth and feeding efficiency of goldfish juveniles. Supplementation with lutein presented higher survival values when compared to the other treatments. Astaxanthin and canthaxanthin supplementation increased the concentration of carotenoids on the skin of goldfish juveniles in relation to the control treatment. For the fish fed with the diet containing lutein, the skin pigmentation was as efficient as astaxanthin and canthaxanthin, but did not differ from the control and combined treatment (canthaxanthin + lutein). The lutein supplementation (50 mg kg‐1) improved survival and promoted efficient carotenoid pigmentation on the skin of goldfish juveniles.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of diets containing different inclusion levels (0%, 7%, 14%, 21% and 28%) of soybean meal fermented by Lactobacillus acidophilus (SMFL) on the zootechnical performance and intestinal health of South American catfish juveniles (Rhamdia quelen). The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments and four replications and lasted 56 days. Five isoproteic (39% crude protein) and isoenergetic (4300 kcal of gross energy kg−1) diets were formulated where SMFL was included in replacement of fish meal. Two hundred forty South American catfish juveniles (3.0 ± 0.5 g) were distributed in 20 tanks (70 L) connected in a recirculation aquaculture system. At the end of the experiment, the inclusion of SMFL up to 21% in replacement of fish meal did not affect the zootechnical performance and also decreased the concentration of Vibrionaceae bacteria present in the intestine compared to the control group. The amount of total lactic and heterotrophic bacteria, the enzymatic activity and the intestinal morphometry did not differ between dietary treatments. The results demonstrate that fermentation with Lactobacillus acidophilus enables greater inclusion of soybean protein in South American catfish diets and promotes the control of intestinal pathogenic bacteria.
ABSTRACT. Organic selenium in the diet of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)broodstock. The aim of this study to test the effect of organic selenium supplementation in the diets of Nile tilapia broodstock. Growth, reproductive performance and performance of fingerlings were evaluated. Eighty adult fish were used, with average weight of 121.7 g and divided into groups of four animals (3 female and 1 male) stocked in 20 tanks with 1.5 cubic meters. The fish were fed five diets containing different levels of organic selenium (0.0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 mg kg -1 ration). In the experimental period, females from all tanks were captured and the eggs collected. The experimental design was entirely randomized, with five treatments and four replicates. To evaluate progeny performance, the fingerlings were shared in four aquariums and fed during 30 days with commercial diet (45% CP). The supplementation with organic selenium did not affect the productive performance as with the reproductive parameters of the broodstock (p > 0.05). On the other hand, the broodstock fed with 0.50 mg of organic selenium produced fingerlings that presented improved weight gain (p < 0.05) compared to fish fed the control diet.Key words: minerals, nutrition, broodstock, culture tilapia.
Sardinella sp. protein hydrolyzate in the feed of Rhandia quelen 957 Lat. Am. J. Aquat. Res., 44(5): 957-966, 2016 "Pathways for sustainable industrial fisheries in southeastern and southern Brazil" P.M. Arana, P.R. Pezzuto, A.O. Ávila-da-Silva, D. Queirolo, J.A.A. Perez & C.A. Arfelli (eds.). Research ArticleEffect of diets containing different types of sardine waste (Sardinella sp.) protein hydrolysate on the performance and intestinal morphometry of silver catfish juveniles (Rhamdia quelen) ABSTRACT. In this study two fractions of muscle hydrolysate were tested, soluble and insoluble (FSM and FIM), they were assessed individually and combined with each other (FSM+FIM). Also, two fractions of hydrolyzed viscera: soluble of natural and industrialized viscera (FSVN and FSVI) were tested on the performance and on the intestinal morphology of juvenile catfish (Rhamdia quelen). The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments and five replicates. Juveniles were kept in aquariums with density of eight fish per tank and were cultured for 56 days. The results were analyzed using parametric variance analysis (ANOVA) and subjected to the Duncan test (5% significance level). The best results on final weight, weight gain, feed conversion rate, and protein efficiency ratio were obtained with the diet containing FSM+FIM, and the diet containing the FSVI. The latter was also the most consumed by the animals. The diet containing FIM was the one that provided the worst consumption results. The worst feed conversion rate was obtained for the diet containing FSM. Survival and body composition did not differ between treatments. The separation of the soluble and insoluble fractions is not necessary or even recommended when the goal is to use the muscle hydrolysate as the ingredient in feed for silver catfish juveniles. The best performance results obtained were with the combination of soluble and insoluble fractions of muscle hydrolysate, and with the industrial viscera soluble hydrolysate. The degree of hydrolysis has a direct effect on feed consumption. Keywords: Rhamdia quelen, enzymatic hydrolysis, fish waste, animal feed, aquaculture. .
