The effect of including mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) and/or enzymes in broiler diets on antibody titers against infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) and Newcastle disease virus (NDV) was evaluated. A total of 750 broilers were distributed into a completely randomized experimental design in a factorial arrangement 2 x 2 + 1 with two levels of MOS (0 and 0.1% until 21 days and 0.05% from 22 to 42 days of age), two levels of enzymes (0 and 0.05%) and a positive control diet containing antibiotic, totaling five treatments with five replicates each. For antibody analyses, blood samples were weekly collected by jugular vein puncture in the same two birds per replicate. The first and last collections were done at 7 and 42 days of age, respectively. The inclusion of MOS resulted in increased antibody titers against IBDV in the fourth (P<0.03) and fifth (P<0.02) weeks, and against NDV in the third (P<0.01), fourth (P<0.03) and fifth (P<0.03) weeks of age. Aims: To evaluate mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) and threonine effects on performance, small intestine morphology and Salmonella spp. counts in Salmonella Enteritidis-challenged birds. Methods and Results: One-day-old chicks (1d) were distributed into five treatments: nonchallenged animals fed basal diet (RB-0), animals fed basal diet and infected with Salmonella Enteritidis (RB-I), animals fed high level of threonine and infected (HT-I), birds fed basal diet with MOS and infected (MOS-I), birds fed high level of threonine and MOS and infected (HT+MOS-I). Birds were inoculated at 2d with Salmonella Enteritidis, except RB-0 birds. Chicks fed higher dietary threonine and MOS showed performance similar to RB-0 and intestinal morphology recovery at 8 dpi. Salmonella counts and the number of Salmonella-positive animals were lower in HT+MOS-I compared with other challenged groups. Conclusion: Mannan oligosaccharides and threonine act synergistically, resulting in improved intestinal environment and recovery after Salmonella inoculation. Significance and Impact of the Study: Nutritional approaches may be useful to prevent Salmonella infection in the first week and putative carcass contamination at slaughter. This is the first report on the possible synergistic effect of mannan oligosaccharides and threonine, and further studies should be performed including performance, microbiota evaluation, composition of intestinal mucins and immune assessment.
RESUMOAvaliou-se o efeito da suplementação dietética de fontes orgânicas de microminerais para galinhas poedeiras sobre o desempenho e a qualidade do ovo. Foram utilizadas 216 aves de linhagem comercial, distribuídas num delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro tratamentos e nove repetições, com seis aves por parcela. O experimento teve duração de 140 dias, divididos em cinco ciclos de 28 dias. Os tratamentos consistiram de uma dieta basal formulada para atender às exigências nutricionais das aves, suplementada com minerais na forma inorgânica ou porcentagens de minerais orgânicos: T1 -Basal + 100% minerais inorgânicos; T2 -Basal + 100% minerais orgânicos; T3 -Basal + 66% minerais orgânicos; T4 -Basal + 33% minerais orgânicos. A produção de ovos, peso do ovo, massa de ovo, conversão alimentar por massa e dúzia de ovo, porcentagem de albúmen, gravidade específica, espessura de casca e margem bruta relativa apresentaram melhores resultados quando os minerais inorgânicos são substituídos em 66% pelos orgânicos. (Brito et al., 2006). Dessa forma, várias tentativas têm sido feitas para torná-los mais biodisponíveis, ao protegê-los das condições do trato gastrintestinal.
-This study was carried out to evaluate the energy levels in the diet to obtain better performance rates and quality of eggs from laying hens in the second production cycle. One hundred and eighty Bovans Goldline laying hens with 62 weeks of age were used during four 28-day periods. A completely randomized experimental design was used with four metabolizable energy levels (2,650, 2,725, 2,800, 2,875 and 2,950 kcal/kg), each with six replicates of six birds. The energy level of diet did not affect the weight of the egg, yolk, albumen and eggshell, the percentages of yolk, albumen and eggshell, yolk color and egg specific gravity. Feed intake, egg production, egg mass and feed conversion per egg mass and per dozen eggs increased significantly with increasing levels of metabolizable energy. Feed intake decreased linearly as the energy level in the diet increased. The metabolizable energy levels showed a quadratic effect on egg production, egg mass and feed conversion per egg mass and per dozen eggs. The metabolizable energy level of 2,830 kcal/kg was the most appropriate to promote better performance and quality of eggs from laying hens in the second production cycle.
The aim of this research was to determine the nutritional requirements of sodium for Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix Japonica) during the periods of 1 to 21 d and 22 to 40 d of age, as well as to evaluate the residual effect on egg production and densitometry bone traits from 41 to 63 d. Two experiments were developed. Experiment 1: 360 Japanese quail were used, from 1 to 21 d of age. Treatments consisted of 5 sodium levels (0.06, 0.12, 0.18, 0.24, and 0.30%). Experiment 2: 240 Japanese quail were used, from 22 to 40 d. Treatments consisted of 5 sodium levels (0.04, 0.12, 0.20, 0.28, and 0.36%). In both experiments, weight gain, final weight, and feed conversion presented a quadratic trend, whereas water intake presented a linear trend. Treatments did not affect the densitometry of bone traits, although they presented a quadratic influence on tibia ash, calcium, and calcium:phosphorus ratio. Therefore, the nutritional requirement of sodium for Japanese quail from 1 to 21 d and from 22 to 40 d is 0.222% and 0.253%, respectively.
Objetivou-se estimar o consumo e caracterizar o perfil do consumidor de frango da cidade de João Pessoa-PB. Foram entrevistadas 500 pessoas residentes na cidade de João Pessoa mediante questionário do tipo fechado. Os questionários foram aplicados em supermercados de pequeno, médio e grande porte, além de um mercado público da cidade de João Pessoa, abrangendo assim diversos tipos de consumidores. O intervalo de confiança foi de 95%, haja vista que é o mais utilizado em pesquisas de marketing, e do erro de 5%. Após isso, os dados foram analisados estatisticamente, sendo obtidas as frequências relativas e absolutas para cada questão. Os resultados demonstraram que a carne de frango é a segunda carne preferida dos consumidores e que os cortes de frango são preferidos em relação ao frango inteiro. Cortes como o peito e a coxa apresentam maior preferência entre os consumidores, que escolhem seus produtos através principalmente do sabor e do seu valor nutritivo, considerando o preço como motivo secundário. A maioria dos entrevistados habitualmente não consome frango caipira.
The use of probiotics in animal and human feeding has been a subject of increasing interest both for the academia and the industry, mostly due to their potential positive effects on health and profitability. However, the knowledge on the composition of bacterial gastrointestinal communities in humans and animals, as well as its respective nutritional requirements, is far from being elucidated. Due to the ban of the use of antibiotic growth promoters in animal feeds, there has been an increasing interest on the utilization of probiotics to improve animal intestinal health under commercial settings. However, the possibility of horizontal transference of antibiotic-resistant genes between probiotic bacteria and pathogenic species has become a concern of poultry farmers and consumers around the world. Innovative ideas have emerged, such as the addition of essential oils, spices, and other plant extracts to feeds of monogastric animals to promote intestinal health. These natural compounds are considered ecologically adequate and safe for feeding purposes. This new reality will probably change the direction of research and of the use of additives in poultry production.
