Nigella sativa name as black seed or Kalonji seed belongs to family of rananculacea. It is widely grown in different part of world and is an annual herb cultivated in India and Pakistan, Phytochemically; it contains fixed oil, protein, alkaloids saponin and essential oil. N. sativa has been reported to possess potent antioxidant, hepatoprotective, antiparasitic, anticancer, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive, anti-ulcer, anti-histaminic etc. The present article reviews on morphology, cultivation, chemical constituent and therapeutic potential as well as clinical aspect and toxicity of N. sativa seed.
The aim of the present study was to study the effect of chronic treatment (9 weeks) of fluoxetine (20 mg/kg p.o.) a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor on blood glucose level and in prevention of diabetic neuropathic pain perception. Evaluation of diabetic neuropathy was performed after 9 weeks of single injection of streptozotocin (70 mg/kg i.v.) in rats. Blood glucose level, glycated haemoglobin, grip strength, pain sensitivity and threshold in diabetic rats were measured at the end of 9 weeks. The results of the present study indicate that the 9 weeks treatment of fluoxetine demonstrates hypoglycemic effect; it marked decreases the blood glucose level in diabetic treated animals. There was also decrease in the grip strength in diabetic rat indicates to induction of neuropathy or nerve damage. Fluoxetine increase the grip strength of diabetic rats. There was also found loss of pain perception in diabetes rats which measured using hot plate and tail flick methods. Fluoxetine increases the licking time and withdrawal latency in hot plate and tail flick test respectively indicates the presence of pain perception and prevention of nerve damage demonstrates its protective effect in diabetic neuropathy. Our study concludes the chronic treatment of fluoxetine significantly decreases the glycemic level as well as it protected from the development of diabetic neuropathy.
To investigate the gastro protective and antioxidant activities of methanolic extract of Taverniera cuneifolia (Roth) Arn. Gastric ulcers were produced by administration of ethanol and pylorus ligation in albino Wister rats. Free radical scavenging activity was evaluated by using DPPH, Nitric oxide, DNA Damage Scavenging methods. Taverniera cuneifolia extract treated group decreased the dose dependently gastric content, acidity, ulcer index and TBARS of gastric content. In this study the DPPH and Nitric oxide radical is significantly reduced by solvent extract and standard with increasing concentration. The maximum prevention of DNA damage was found at 4 μg/ml concentration. The gastro protective property of methanolic extract of Taverniera cuneifolia in pylorus ligation model has been demonstrated to reduce the number of ulcer and ulcer index. The present study suggests that methanolic extract of Taverniera cuneifolia roots are beneficial in the treatment of gastric ulcer.
Objective: The present work was carried out to evaluate the effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Sesbania sesban (HAESS) on cognitive impaired rats.In wistar rat's amnesia was induced by subcutaneous Materials and methods: administration of scopolamine butyl bromide (1mg/kg). Nootropic activity evaluated in terms of Spatial memory using T maze spontaneous alternation task.HAESS (400mg/kg) have shown significant level Results and conclusion: improvement in scopolamine-induced deficit with respect to recognition in spatial memory. The observed results suggest that hydroalcoholic extract of aerial parts of improves cognitive performance with respect to Sesbania sesban spatial memory processes.
Anaphylaxis is a syndrome that can be fatal, which is seen due to systemic release of inflammatory mediators. Antigen and Antibody reaction is usually a trigger in the body to go into anaphylactic shock. In this study, anaphylaxis induced by egg albumin in the rats. The efficiency of MC (Momordica charantia) against anaphylaxis was evaluated. The standard drug used was Dexamethasone. The MC extract is given in doses 100 and 200 mg/kg p.o.
Results: The MC extract was found to be effective (p<0.01) inhibitor of egg albumin induced anaphylactic reaction.
Conclusion: From this study, we can conclude that Momordica charantia fruits have good anti-anaphylactic activity.
Keywords: Anaphylaxis, Momordica charantia, Egg albumin, Passive paw anaphylaxis, Dexamethasone.
