J, In response to a suggestion that the Board of Directors prepare or cause to be prepared "clean campaign" guidelines for political campaign activity with respect to APA elections, the Board, at its December 1974 meeting, voted to refer the issue to the Policy and Planning (P&P) Board, with a request for a report back to the Board of Directors as soon as possible after the next meeting of the P&P Board.K. At its January 197S meeting, the Board of Directors considered a proposal that the call for nominations for President-elect accompany dues statements and that a business reply envelope accompany the APA election ballot. The Board voted to recommend to Council that these proposals not be approved, on the grounds that there is no real evidence that member participation would be increased, that calling for nominations almost two years in advance of when the person would take office is not reasonable, that there would be deadline difficulties, and, for the reply envelope, that there would be too great an expense in view of APA's financial difficulties. Systematic variation of electric shock, hunger, thirst and the approach-avoidance conflict which had previously been shown capable of producing gastric ulcers in rats indicated (a) conflict to be a significant variable, (b) hunger and shock to contribute significantly in interaction, (c) thirst to fail of significance, and (d) that though weight loss is significantly related to the hunger, thirst and shock variables, it was not directly related to ulcer formation.

40 male hooded rats were used in an investigation concerning the relation of social experience to ulcer formation in a long-term approach-avoidance conflict situation. The hypotheses were: "1. Animals placed in the conflict situation alone are less resistant to ulceration than animals tested with other animals present. 2. Animals reared in isolation are less resistant to ulceration than animals reared together. 3. Interaction effects between these 2 sets of conditions exist." The first hypothesis was confirmed at the .01 level; the second and third hypotheses were not confirmed, probably owing to the limitations in the sensitivity of the experimental procedures. 21 references.

What are the prospects for the American family in the years ahead? To develop some perspective on this question, this article considers the ways in which the nature of the family and its functions in a changing society have evolved between 1800 and the present. Particular attention is paid to the development of individualistic patterns of family behavior and the rise of the nuclear family in the face of increased urbanization and geographic mobility, greater age segregation, lessened economic interdependence of family members, and increasingly depersonalized relations between the family and other social institutions. It can be seen that some of the challenges faced by today's families are longstanding; others have assumed prominence relatively recently, including the rise of the women's movement, women's fuller participation in the labor force, and the impact of "the 'me' decade." If families, particularly the poor, are to be successful in coping with social change, essential social, educational, health, and mental health programs will need to be salvaged. In addition, community support systems, including mutual self-help groups, will need to be created, expanded, or strengthened. As individuals, we need to be aware that self-realization and self-indulgence are not synonymous and that freedom and commitment are two sides of the same coin.As America entered the 1980s, "the future of the family" began to replace the obsessive concern of the 1960s and 1970s with "today's youth" as a primary focus of popular sociology and political rhetoric. A White House Conference on Families was held, and it became the subject of considerable unanticipated conflict and divisiveness. Magazine articles and television reports on "Saving the Family" and "The Family in Transition: A Challenge From Within" appeared in seemingly endless profusion.
