Micrometeorological alterations in vineyards by using plastic coveringAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of plastic covering on the microclimate of vineyards (Vitis vinifera L., cultivar Moscato Giallo), in Serra Gaúcha region in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The experiment was performed in Flores da Cunha, RS, during the 2005/2006 growing season. It comprised uncovered and covered rows of vines, using a 160 µm thick plastic film. Photossinthetically active radiation (PAR), air temperature and humidity, and wind velocity were monitored: over the plastic covering; between the film and the canopy; over the uncovered canopy; and close to grapes of both treatments. Reference evapotranspiration was estimated for both treatments. From the incoming PAR, 67.5% reached the covered canopy, 16% reached the covered grapes, and 36% reached the uncovered grapes. The plastic covering increased by 3.4ºC the maximum air temperatures close to plants. Diurnal air relative humidity was reduced, while water vapor pressure and vapor pressure deficit were increased because of the plastic covering, which also reduced in 88% the wind velocity in comparison to open air. The reference evapotranspiration on the covered canopy was 35% lower than in open air. Although increasing diurnal air temperatures, the plastic covering may reduce the evaporative demand on vineyards, by reducing the incoming solar radiation and the wind velocity.
The antioxidant defense system acts to maintain the equilibrium between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the elimination of toxic levels of ROS in plants. Overproduction and accumulation of ROS results in metabolic disorders and can lead to the oxidative destruction of the cell. Several stress factors cause ROS overproduction and trigger oxidative stress in crops and weeds. Recently, the involvement of the antioxidant system in weed interference and herbicide treatment in crops and weeds has been the subject of investigation. In this review, we address ROS production and plant mechanisms of defense, alterations in the antioxidant system at transcriptional and enzymatic levels in crops induced by weed interference, and herbicide exposure in crops and weeds. We also describe the mechanisms of action in herbicides that lead to ROS generation in target plants. Lastly, we discuss the relations between antioxidant systems and weed biology and evolution, as well as the interactive effects of herbicide treatment on these factors.
Emergence uniformity and the time required for emergence are essential factors for obtaining highly productive potential in plants. Factors such as sowing depth and soil moisture affect uniformity and emergence, but little is known about the impacts of seed vigor. Thus, we determined the impacts of seed vigor on uniformity and growth as well as development and yield in soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merrill) plants. The treatments consisted of four vigor levels (89%, 57%, 47%, and 43%) obtained by accelerated aging, in a randomized block design, with five replicates at three sites. Seeds with the highest vigor level showed higher uniformity and faster emergence. Dominated plants through their phenotypic plasticity modify stem diameter and internode length. The plants that emerged earlier had a larger leaf area in the three stages (V1, V4, and R2), allowing them to accumulate more photoassimilates in the initial stages. Consequently, these plants exhibited an increase in yield components, especially in the number of fertile nodes and the number of pods per plant, making them more productive.
WATER RELATIONS AND LEAF GAS EXCHANGE IN VINEYARD WITH PLASTIC OVERHEAD COVERABSTRACT -This study evaluated the plastic overhead cover (POC) effect on evaporative demand of atmosphere and soil water content, as well as their consequences on gas exchange (photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and transpiration) and leaf water potential in grapevine. The experiment was carried out during the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons, in a vineyard of 'Moscato Giallo', trained in "Y" and covered with an impermeable plastic cloth (2.65 m x 160 μm), in 12 rows with 35 m, with five rows left uncovered (control). In both areas, the microclimate was evaluated, in terms of air temperature, air relative humidity, radiation photosynthetically active and wind speed above the canopy. The POC increased the soil water content between rows and restricted it in the most superficial depths of rows (0-10 cm). The POC also decreased the evaporative demand of atmosphere, mainly by reducing wind speed (-90%), which increased the leaf water potential and stomatal conductance. In this way, POC can favor water conditions and increase leaf carbon assimilation in grapevines.
