Soybean Seed Vigor: Uniformity and Growth as Key Factors to Improve Yield

Abstract: Emergence uniformity and the time required for emergence are essential factors for obtaining highly productive potential in plants. Factors such as sowing depth and soil moisture affect uniformity and emergence, but little is known about the impacts of seed vigor. Thus, we determined the impacts of seed vigor on uniformity and growth as well as development and yield in soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merrill) plants. The treatments consisted of four vigor levels (89%, 57%, 47%, and 43%) obtained by accelerated aging… Show more

“…This fact evidences the need for solutions to help control storage conditions, meeting the specified standards for seeds commercialization. The monitoring of the parameters of temperature, relative humidity, and water content of the seeds is decisive for maintaining quality throughout storage [6][7][8]. Seeds quality cannot be improved during storage, but a temperature-and relative humidity-controlled environment allows preserving the seeds until the appropriate period for sowing, without reducing quality [9][10][11].…”

“…In this regard, seed size traits, i.e., seed length (SL), thickness (ST) and width (SW), and seed shape traits, i.e., length to-thickness (SLT), length-to-width (SLW), width-to-thickness (SWT) ratios and atness index (FI) determine seed vigor, quality and yield in soybean (Cha-um and Kirdmanee 2011;Salas et al 2006). Flatness index contributes a lot towards seed vigor which impacts the seedling emergence time by determining the development of Soybean plant throughout their growth cycle as contributing factor to higher leaf area index from early vegetative stages (V 1 ) to reproductive stages (R 2 ) (Ebone et al 2020). Vigor reduced meaning atness index reduced, showing the increase in variability among the plants in the eld.…”

“…Seed deterioration is an important topic in plant science, as seed is the means of propagation for the majority of cultivated species [ 1 ]; in addition, seed deterioration has not yet been completely elucidated due the complexity of this phenomenon [ 2 ]. Nevertheless, it is known that deterioration leads to a reduction of seed quality, which, in turn, causes a reduction in crop yield [ 3 , 4 ]. In a world where population levels and food demand are increasing, it is imperative to improve our understanding of the seed deterioration process in order to take measures to avoid its occurrence, thereby helping to improve crop yield and ensuring food security.…”
