ABSTRACTA volume estimation system for individual trees was generated based on a segmented taper function for Tectona grandis plantations established in Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas. The volume of 144 trees of different ages was estimated; for each, the diameter with bark was measured, as was the height above the stem base from 1 m above the stump to the total height. The statistical adjustment of six segmented taper functions was assessed, and the model of Fang was selected as the best, since it is the most accurate, the one with least bias and provides a correct description of the stem taper. An adjustment was simultaneously made with its respective merchantable volume function based on the mixed effect model technique, whereby the specific variation was controlled at tree level, and the estimation of the parameters and the accuracy of the predictions were improved. The results indicate that the derived volume estimation system consists of equations that accurately describe the stem profile and estimate the merchantable and total volumes, as well as the merchantable length at a minimum diameter and vice versa. The points of change in the dendrometric stem shape are similar to those of other broadleaf tree species. The equivalent of the shape factor from the total volume model was 0. 43 in average, which allows estimations that are very close to the observed volumes and is comparatively lower ...
ABSTRACTForest nursery production in containers in México mainly uses peat moss, vermiculite and agrolite (standard mixture). Sawdust and pine bark are subproducts of the forest industry which can be used as substrates. The objective of this work was the characterization of five mixtures using pine bark, sawdust, peat moss, vermiculite. Evaluation included physical (bulk density, total porosity, air porosity and easily available water) and chemical (pH, electrical conductivity and cation exchange capacity) characterization. Bulk density varied from 0,31 to 0,51 g m -3 while the standard mixture was 0,15 g m -3 . Total porosity varied from 77 to 91% compared to the standard mixture with 84%. Air porosity varied from 8 to 20% compared to the standard mixture with 8%. Easily available water varied from 4,8 to 9,9% compared to the standard mixture with 17,7%. pH of the mixtures with bark and sawdust varied from 4,52 to 7,70 while the standard mixture was 3,87. Electrical conductivity varied from 1,84 to 2,69 ds m -1 while the standard mixture was 1,13 ds m -1 . Cation exchange capacity varied from 43,6 to 89,4 meq/100 g while the standard mixture was 60,4 meq/100 g. Physical properties of mixture 4 (20% of bark + 80% of sawdust) are similar to standard mixture, but not the chemical properties. This mixture is a promising substrate for forest nursery production.
AbstractPine sawdust has been utilized for plant production in forest nurseries with promising results. The objective of the present study consisted in proving the effectiveness of two substrates of these materials and two controlled release fertilizers. Pinus pseudostrobus was produced in polystyrene trays with 77 cavities, with: S1 (60, 15, 15, and 10 % weathered pine sawdust, composted pine bark, peat moss and vermiculite), and S2 (60, 15, 15 and 10 % fresh pine sawdust, composted pine bark, peat moss and vermiculite), besides two fertilizers with two nutrient release periods: Multicote® (18-6-12, 8 and 4 months) and Osmocote Plus® (15-9-12), applied during 8 to 9 months and during 5 to 6 months), with a single dose of 8 g L -1 of substrate. A wholly random design with 12 treatments and four repetitions was used. In every case, good quality plants were obtained, with a diameter of over 5 mm, a height of 22 to 25 cm, and a Dickson's quality index above 0.7. The values of the morphological variables were equal in both strata, except for the dry root weight, which was higher in substrate S2. Overall, Osmocote® had higher values than Multicote®, except for the height variable. It was concluded that pine sawdust is useful as a substrate, and the use of a combination of fertilizers with various release periods proved to be more effective than the application of a single fertilizer.
Substrate is a factor that significantly influences the quality and production costs of nursery seedlings. The objective of this study was to evaluate combinations of peat moss, composted pine bark, and fresh pine sawdust in order to identify the proportions that favour the quality of Pinus engelmannii Carr. seedlings and minimise the production costs in the nursery. Substrates were formed using mixtures of peat moss (15% to 50%), composted pine bark (15% to 50%) and fresh pine sawdust (20% to 70%), with 2, 4 and 6 g L−1 of controlled release fertilizer (Multicote®, Haifa, Israel). A completely randomised experimental design with a factorial arrangement of 7 × 3 was used. The evaluated factors are root collar diameter, biomass, N-P-K content, and production costs of the substrates which were determined based on the container volume and three commercial quotations. Significant differences were found in root collar diameter and biomass, highlighting the treatments using 50% to 70% sawdust with 6 g L−1 of fertilizer. Assimilated values of N-P-K were acceptable in all treatments with 4 and 6 g L−1 of fertilizer. In the substrates with high percentages of sawdust, seedlings with morphological characteristics and nutritional levels within the values recommended for conifers were produced. In addition, it was possible to reduce the production cost of the substrates by up to 67%.
