Sustainable forest management needs tools that can predict how silvicultural treatments will affect cutting stands. Growth and yield systems are an example of these tools because they can represent periods of growth and yield of a stand in numerical terms. The aim of this research was to develop a dynamic growth and yield timber system with the stand-level models approach for Pinus patula in even-aged forests of Ixtlán de Juárez, Oaxaca, Mexico. The data was obtained from two consecutive remeasurements of 66 permanent 400 m 2 plots. With this information, prediction and projection equations in the algebraic difference approach for mean diameter at breast height (DBH), basal area and total volume per hectare were fitted through the seemingly unrelated regression technique. Mortality was fitted by the non-linear least squares method. A model of dominant height and site index (Levakovic II) with polymorphism was related to basal area, DBH, total volume ha −1 and mortality equations. The growth system generated an average optimal age rotation of 32 years when the current annual increment (CAI) was the same as the mean annual increment (MAI) for the mean site index and a density of 1500 trees ha −1 at five years. The growth and yield system developed is an important tool for planning forest management of even-aged P. patula forests.
Generalized height-diameter at breast height (D) models are essential for the estimation of the timber stocks of a forest stand, as well as in the generation of base information to develop forest growth models, and as basic inputs in the development of forest management plans. Generalized models were developed to estimate total height (TH) based on the D and stand variables, of five Pinus species in forests under forest management of Ixtl an de Ju arez, Oaxaca, Mexico. The data used come from a timber forest inventory, where n ¼ 1041 sampling plots of 1000 m 2 each were established based on a stratified-systematic sampling design. The species selected according to their relative abundance were: Pinus patula, Pinus oaxacana, Pinus ayacahuite, Pinus teocote and Pinus leiophylla. Five nonlinear equations were fitted using regression techniques to predict the TH of the trees under several silviculture regimes and forest management conditions. The statistical criteria of goodness of fit used were: adjusted coefficient of determination (R 2 adj ), root mean square error (RMSE) and absolute average bias in the prediction ( E). Likewise, the graphic analysis of the predictive capacity of the equations was considered. The D and the stand variables (quadratic mean diameter, dominant diameter and dominant height) for these species explained between 75 and 83% of the variability of the TH data. The predicting variables to apply the developed generalized models to estimate tree's total height require less sampling effort and are derived from conventional forest inventory data, which allows to reduce costs and time in field work.
S. Ríos-Ramírez, J. Enríquez-del Valle, G. Rodríguez-Ortíz, and J. Ruíz-Luna. 2017. Benzylaminopurine and indol-3-acetic acid concentrations in in vitro proliferation of Agave angustifolia adventitious shoots. Cien. Inv. Agr. 44(3): 285-294. Today, a micropropagation method for Agave angustifolia exists, but for the multiplication of propagules, more information is needed on the diverse components of the culture medium, cytokinins and auxins and their effect on organogenetic response. The objective of this study was to evaluate dosages of benzylaminopurine and indol-3-acetic acid (IAA) in a culture medium and their effect on the formation of new adventitious shoots (organogenesis). The explants used were clusters of shoots on a common base of A. angustifolia stem tissue. Clusters of three to four shoots were established in different variants of a Murashige and Skoog culture medium that had different concentrations of benzylaminopurine (BAP; 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 mg L -1 ) and IAA) (0.1, 0.3, and 1 mg L -1 ). After 16 wk, it was found that a higher proliferation of shoots was positively related to the concentration of growth regulators. Explants formed a greater quantity of shoots in a culture medium with an increase in BAP of up to 4 mg L -1 and in IAA of up to 1 mg L -1 , and there was a synergistic effect with BAP to induce the formation of the greatest number of shoots.
