ABSTRACTA volume estimation system for individual trees was generated based on a segmented taper function for Tectona grandis plantations established in Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas. The volume of 144 trees of different ages was estimated; for each, the diameter with bark was measured, as was the height above the stem base from 1 m above the stump to the total height. The statistical adjustment of six segmented taper functions was assessed, and the model of Fang was selected as the best, since it is the most accurate, the one with least bias and provides a correct description of the stem taper. An adjustment was simultaneously made with its respective merchantable volume function based on the mixed effect model technique, whereby the specific variation was controlled at tree level, and the estimation of the parameters and the accuracy of the predictions were improved. The results indicate that the derived volume estimation system consists of equations that accurately describe the stem profile and estimate the merchantable and total volumes, as well as the merchantable length at a minimum diameter and vice versa. The points of change in the dendrometric stem shape are similar to those of other broadleaf tree species. The equivalent of the shape factor from the total volume model was 0. 43 in average, which allows estimations that are very close to the observed volumes and is comparatively lower ...
& Key message More accurate diameter at breast height (dbh)-growth models are needed for developing management tools for mixed-species forests in Mexico. Individual distance-dependent dbh growth models that quantify local neighborhood effects have been developed for four species groups in such forests. The performance of the models is improved by distinguishing between inter-and intraspecific group competitions. & Context The management of mixed-species forests in the northwest of Durango, Mexico, is mainly based on the selection method. Understanding the interspecific and intraspecific competition is critical to developing management tools for such mixed-species forests. & Aims An individual-based distance-dependent modeling approach was used to model the growth of dbh and to evaluate neighborhood effects for four species groups in Mexican mixed-species stands. & Methods Twenty-two species were classified into four groups: Pinus (seven species), other conifers (three species), other broadleaves (four species), and Quercus (eight species). Four methods were used to select neighboring trees and 12 competition indices (CIs) were calculated. Comparisons of the neighboring trees selection methods and CIs and tests of assumptions about neighborhood effects were conducted. & Results Intra-species-group competition significantly reduced diameter growth for all species groups, except for the Quercus group. The Pinus, other conifers, and Quercus groups had significant and negative neighborhood effects on the other broadleaves species group, and not vice versa. The Quercus group also had negative neighborhood effect on the Pinus and other conifers species groups, and not vice versa. The Pinus and other conifers species groups had negative neighborhood effects on each other. All fitted age-independent dbh growth models showed a good of fit to the data (adjusted coefficient of determination larger than 0.977). & Conclusion The growth models can be used to predict dbh growth for species groups and competition in mixed-species stand from Durango, Mexico.
Ten systems of compatible taper and outside-bark volume equations derived from upper-height-based volume ratio equations were compared with a used segmented-stem system of compatible taper and volume equations. All the systems were simultaneously fitted to cumulative volume data and taper data for Arizona pine, Aztec pine, Durango pine, Mexican white pine, and Smooth-leaved pine species in naturally regenerated mixed-species forests in Mexico. The systems derived from volume ratio equations performed better than the segmented-stem system for most species. The resultant top systems might be easier to implement than the segmented-stem system for predicting upper-stem height, upper-stem diameter, merchantable volume, and total stem volume for considered species.
ABSTRACTA land zoning for the establishment of commercial forest plantations of Eucalyptus grandis and E. urophylla in the limits of the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Veracruz is reported. Results from the spatial multicriteria evaluation techniques known as boolean algebra and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), implemented in a SIG environment to identify land suitability levels, are compared. The evaluation criteria were selected with base on the influence (weight) of the ecological requirements of the species and the availability of adequate scale cartographic information. Discret variables such as precipitation, temperature; soil depth, soil texture, soil pH, and continuous such as altitude and slope were used. All criteria (variables) were standardized using fuzzy logic membership functions. The relative importance of the criteria (weights) were calculated from expert's opinions. Results indicate that the studied area has potential for the establishment of plantations with the species considered. More than 50% of the area is very suitable to establish E. urophylla, whereas for E. grandis the suitability is distributed as follows: 25% high, 25% medium and 50% low.
Studies on functional relationships between relative stem diameter and height to estimate timber yield are useful in the management of commercial forest plantations. With taper analysis data of 42 Pinus pseudostrobus Lindl. trees in the indigenous community of Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro , Michoacan, Mexico, six compatible systems for predicting taper (d), merchantable volume (Vm), stem volume (Vs), total tree volume (Vt) and branch volume (Vb) were fitted and evaluated. The compatible taper and merchantable volume equations were based on volume ratio equations. Three Vs equations were tested in each system. In general, the compatible systems presented statistical accuracy in the d, Vm, Vs and Vt components but were less accurate in Vb. Three compatible systems were selected, according to their more efficient goodness-of-fit statistics, and a different total volume equation was incorporated into each system. The compatible systems based on volume ratio equations are simple, reliable tools for estimation of stand timber stocks and product classification of P. pseudostrobus in commercial forest plantations in Mexico.
