Elderly people with neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) present difficulties in learning and maintaining arbitrary conditional relations between stimuli. The aims of Study 1 were to (a) verify the efficacy of a procedure of teaching conditional relations by exclusion in elderly people with and without NCDs and (b) determine the presence or absence of the formation of equivalence classes based on this procedure. Five elderly people without NCDs (control group [CG]) and 6 elderly women with NCDs (experimental group [EG]) underwent a teaching-by-exclusion procedure (linear structure) with 4 classes of stimuli with 5 stimuli each (dictated names of people, photographs, written names, degrees of relatedness, and profession). The formation of equivalence classes was then tested. All of the participants in the CG learned the conditional relations, and 3 of the 5 formed equivalence classes. However, none of the participants in the EG learned the AB relations, despite demonstrating performance by exclusion. The aim of Study 2 was to determine the efficacy of a procedure that combined teaching by exclusion and the delayed-cue procedure to teach arbitrary relations to elderly people with NCDs. Four elderly women with NCDs underwent a teaching procedure (one-to-many structure) with 3 classes with 3 visual stimuli each (photographs, written names, and names of professions). All of the participants learned the conditional relations, and 2 named some of the photographs that were presented. The procedure effectively taught arbitrary relations and may be promising for studying intervention procedures in elderly people with NCDs.
This study aimed to investigate the number of exclusion trials necessary for teaching auditory-visual relationships to individuals with autism and Down syndrome. Study participants were seven individuals with autism and a history of early behavioral intervention (EI), four adults with autism without a history of early behavioral intervention (NI), and three adults with Down syndrome. A set of procedures was used for teaching the auditory-visual matching to sample, and naming responses of the new stimuli were tested. For the individuals with autism and EI and for the individuals with Down syndrome, the required number of repetitions was stable and concentrated in the minimum programmed by the procedure (two repetitions). However, the procedure was not effective for teaching new conditional relationships for the adults with autism and NI. The results indicate that the procedure can constitute an important teaching technology; however, its efficacy appears to vary depending on the educational profile of the participant.
ABSTRACT Exclusion performance is defined as the selection of an undefined stimulus (amongst known alternatives), when an undefined sample is presented. This process is referred to as an important component in vocabulary learning in young children. Despite being a well-documented phenomenon in literature, it is necessary to understand how the presentation of new words to infants can affect learning of multiple word-object relations. The aim of this study was to determine whether the successive introduction of stimuli procedure is efficient to teach simultaneously two new word-object relations for infants. Participants were seven children (17-20 months old -three girls). Matching to sample tasks were carried out with familiar objects and names (baseline), followed by one block of training trials (reinforced exclusion trials) of two new word-object relations (successive introduction of stimuli procedure), and learning tests. All children presented exclusion performance in the first presentation of each new stimulus, confirming the occurrence of this performance in infants. The introduction of the second new relation disturbed the participants' performance in the teaching trials, but two out of seven children showed evidence of ...
Neurocognitive disorders (NCDs) affect complex processes of stimulus control, such as relational performance. The aims of this study were (a) to compare the performance of older adults with NCD with that of control older adults in generalized identity matching (GI) tests and in responding by exclusion probes and (b) to verify the effect of identity matching training on subsequent GI and exclusion tests, in older adults with NCD. Participants were 24 older adults (aged 60 to 92 years), eight without NCD (control group I [CG I]), and 16 with NCD: CG II, with accurate performance in the GI tests and the experimental group (EG), with low performance in these tests. After exclusion and GI tests with all participants, the EG underwent identity matching training with 3 pairs of visual stimuli, and exclusion and identity matching posttests. All participants of the CG I and CG II presented accurate performance in the tests. Seven of the 8 older adults of the EG achieved the learning criterion in the training and showed some improvement in the GI posttest; however, positive effects of the training were not observed in the exclusion posttests. Teaching procedures for identity matching in older adult patients with NCD can produce positive results; however, it is necessary to understand the relationship between cognitive decline and other relational performances.
Shared story reading is an effective way to promote the learning of vocabulary for children, however, the basic processes involved in this learning have yet to be clarifi ed. The aim of this study was to investigate the infl uence of social cues on word learning while reading books, and whether the new word-picture relationships presented in the stories sustain subsequent performance by exclusion, given unknown pictures. Two non-commercial illustrated stories, containing two pseudowords each, were read with and without the presentation of social cues for 12 children, 3 years of age, in a repeated measures design. Matching, exclusion and naming probes evaluated the learning of these pseudowords. The performance of the children did not differ in relation to the learning of the pseudowords in both reading conditions (with presentation of social cues and without cues), and all presented performance by exclusion in the planned probes. These results confi rm that the shared reading situation promotes the learning of new relationships between words and pictures, however, do not verify the role of social cues in this process. Keywords: Shared book reading, learning words, verbal behavior, behavior analysis.
