-(Vegetation structure of the thorny deciduous woodland (Caatinga) in an area of central sertão of Pernambuco). Vegetation structure of a "Caatinga" sensu stricto (thorny deciduous woodland) was studied in a lowland area at the municipalities of Floresta and Betânia, State of Pernambuco, Brazil. Height and perimeter of all woody plants to be found in 1 hectare were censured when stem perimeter at soil level was ≥ 3 cm and the height ≥ 1 m. A total of 3,140 individuals belonging to 28 plant species were registered with a basal area of 18.5 m 2 . In general, results from surveys at lowlands on plain areas presented smaller individual stem diameters than those located near streams or mountain range sites. Physiognomic differences in the caatinga sensu stricto on lowlands are related to differences on the density of plants with greater diameters. The diameter distribution of Caesalpinia gardneriana Benth. (Caesalpiniaceae) and Croton rhamnifolioides Pax & K. Hoffm. (Euphorbiaceae), the two most important tree species, indicate that these plant populations may be regenerating from former disturbance. (Caesalpiniaceae) e Croton rhamnifolioides Pax & K. Hoffm.
ABSTRACT(Understorey structure within habitats (edge and forest interior) of two fragments of Atlantic Rainforest, Igarassu, Pernambuco, Brazil) The woody understorey of two Atlantic Rainforest remnants in Igarassu, Pernambuco, were studied (Pezinho Forest -MPZ, 27ha and BR Forest -MBR, 99ha), aiming at assessing physiognomy, structure and edge influence over the vegetation. Ten 5 × 5m plots were set up at the edge (0-50m from forest margin), interior I (50-100m) and interior II (>300m) of each fragment. In MPZ, 1152 individuals and 65 species were recorded (H'=3.186 nats/ ind.): 36, 42 and 39 on the edge, interior I and II, respectively. Structural differences were found between habitats, individualizing the edge, although little physiognomic differences were encountered. In MBR, 1405 individuals and 67 species were registered (H'=3,068 nats/ind.): 37 species in the edge, 36 and 48 in Interior I and II. Physiognomic and structural differences mainly distinguished the Interior II. Floristically, a similarity of 45.5% was found between fragments, which were structurally different: in MPZ, there were more understorey-typical individuals and less rare species; MBR retained greater species richness, more rare species and higher regeneration of canopy species. In both, there was an understorey differentiation at the edges, more evident in the smaller fragment, and, in the larger remnant, differentiation of interior II.
Palavras-chave: espectro biológico, caatinga sensu stricto, semiárido Vascular flora and life forms in one hectare of caatinga in Brazilian Northeastern A B S T R A C TThis work aimed at describing the floristic profile and life forms of vascular plants recorded in one hectare of caatinga sensu stricto in the State of Pernambuco. A total of 101 plant species was recorded, in 39 families, among which Euphorbiaceae and Mimosaceae outlined by the greatest richness. Herbs were represented by 60 species. Regarding life forms, 36 species of therophytes, 23 phanaerophytes (of which 13 microphanaerophytes, seven nanophanaerophytes and three mesophanaerophytes), 16 chamaephytes, 13 hemicryptophytes, and one geophyte were recorded. Twelve species could not be identified in respect to life forms. Comparing the results of different areas of caatinga vegetation with others distinct deciduous vegetation types within the semi-arid (carrasco and decidual forest), caatinga has low proportion of phanaerophytes and high of therophytes.
Palavras-chave: fitossociologia, fragmentação, mata atlântica, árvores Characterization of adult arboreous vegetation in a fragment of Atlantic Rainforest, Igarassu-PE A B S T R A C TThe main objective of this study was to provide a characterization of adult tree vegetation in a fragment of Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil. Forty plots (10 x 25m) were set up, totaling 1 ha, in which all woody individuals with PBH > 15 cm were sampled. A total of 1,576 individuals were recorded, of 115 species, 41 families and 69 genera. Shannon-Weaver diversity index was of 3.6 nats/ ind. Most species-rich families were: Myrtaceae (17 species), Melastomataceae and Mimosaceae (7), Caesalpiniaceae and Sapotaceae (6), Apocynaceae, Fabaceae and Rubiaceae (5). Most important species were Eschweilera ovata, Dialium guianense, Pogonophora schomburgkiana, Brosimum discolor, Tapirira guianensis, Maytenus disticophylla, Parkia pendula, Byrsonima sericea, Allophyllus edulis and Ouratea hexasperma. Distribution of individuals per diameter classes showed a "reversed J" shape; per height classes, most individuals were concentrated at intermediate classes. Tree diversity in this fragment is amongst mean values recorded at the State. Most important families and species are also frequent in other surveys in forest remnants in the State of Pernambuco. The fact that a great number of individuals appear in low diameter and height classes may suggest that the fragment in regenerating, with areas at initial stages of succession.
