Warm‐climate grasslands can be degraded by overgrazing and reduced soil fertility. However, legume trees integrated into these systems (silvopasture) can provide long‐term marketable wood for sale and add N to the system. In addition, tree legumes can improve livestock diet by providing high crude protein forage. Our research assessed biomass and N accumulation by tree legumes: gliricidia [Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Kunthe] and sabia (Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth.) grown in conventionally grazed signal grass (Brachiaria decumbens Stapf) pasture. The seedlings were planted in 2008 and growth rates were measured in 2012 and 2013. One year after the seedlings were planted, in July 2009, the pastures were grazed. Aboveground biomass doubled from 25 to 50 Mg ha−1 between February 2012 and August 2013. The thickest branches contributed the most (p ≤ 0.05) biomass: 58% for gliricidia and 54% for sabia. Leaves represented the smallest (p ≤ 0.05) fraction: 7 to 13% for gliricidia and 4 to 14% for sabia. Leaf and branch nutrient concentrations varied little (p > 0.05) between species and sampling periods. Gliricidia leaf N ranged from 33.6 to 38.0 g kg−1, while sabia leaf N ranged from 26.9 to 38.5 g kg−1. Biologically fixed N in leaves ranged from 30 to 121 kg ha−1. Sabia branches had less moisture and greater lignin, density, and gross calorific power than gliricidia. While thicker branches represent most of the aboveground tree biomass, leaves and thin branches have greater N concentration, representing an important return pathway to the soil.
Palavras-chave: qualidade do solo, manejo do solo, vegetação nativa Physical attributes of soil under different uses with irrigation in semiarid Pernambuco ABSTRACT Soils in semiarid climate regions had been degraded by salinization, reducing their productive capacity. This work aimed to evaluate physical attributes of soil in an irrigated perimeter in the semiarid Northeast of Brazil and to compare different soil uses using these attributes. The study was carried out at Icó-Mandantes Irrigated Perimeter, between Petrolândia and Floresta, in semiarid region of Pernambuco, in which the populations were separated by their uses in annual crops (C), fruticulture (F), discarded lands (D), pasture (P), native vegetation (V). Undisturbed and disturbed soil samples were collected, in layers of 0-10, 10-30 and 30-60 cm, for physical analysis. The indicators were submitted to multivariate analysis, by Principal Component Analysis, and clustering by the Tocher method. The agricultural use promoted alterations in the physical attributes of soil in relation to soil under native vegetation. The soil quality for the physical attributes varied between the layers of 0-10 and 10-30 cm, except in use V, sohich presented similar quality in these layers. F and P uses had presented better physical soil quality than C use in the layers of 0-10 and 10-30 cm and D use presented the worst soil quality in the evaluated layers.

Palavras-chave: forragem, leguminosa arbórea, melhoramento vegetal, trópico úmidoEvaluation for thorns and cattle preference of progenies of "sabiazeiro" (Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia Benth.) plants AB S TR ACTThis work aimed to evaluate cattle preference and level of thorns of 16 "Sabiazeiro" (Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia Benth.) progenitors previously selected for thorns absence. The study was carried out at Itambe Experimental Station, sub-humid forest zone of Pernambuco State, Brazil. The treatments included 189 progenies from 16 selected progenitors and 40 progenies from unselected progenitors (control treatment). All plants were obtained by open pollination, but the selected progenitors were isolated from other plants. Note scales were used for thorn evaluation and cattle preference. The progenies from selected plants had a higher proportion of plants in the categories without and with little thorns and higher cattle preference than the progenies from unselected plants. In general, "sabiazeiro" showed higher cattle preference in the begining of the dry season, than the remaining part of the year. The progenitors number 6, 9,12 and 19 were selected for continuity of the breeding programe. The progenies variability indicate it is possible to obtain a forage "sabiazeiro" variety without absence thorns and high preference.
Dendrometric characterization in paricá plantations (Schizolobium amazonicum Huber ex. Ducke) in the region of Paragominas, Pará, Brazil ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the main dendrometric characteristics of paricá (Schizolobium amazonicum Huber ex. Ducke), such as diameter, height and form, and also test models to estimate the total volume of paricá trees in commercial plantations with five, six and seven years of age, in a 4 m x 4 m spacing, in the region of Paragominas, Pará, Brazil. The models selection was based on goodness-of-fit indicators, such as R 2 , standard error of estimates, as well as the residual graphical analysis. Regarding the dendrometrical characteristics, results showed that the paricá trees presented similar dendrometrical measures when compared to eucalyptus in similar conditions. The paricá had a similar growth in both diameter and height to fast-growth species. As for the equations of total volume, generally, Schumacher & Hall's model showed the best results to estimate the individual tree volume.
Environmental factors affect the germination process, like the presence of seed coat and the quality of light; these informations are still scarce for many native species from Brazil, especially for Senna cana, which there are no adequate standards and methodologies to be used in germination tests. The aim of this research was to recommend adequate pre-germinative treatment(s) to overcome seed dormancy, and determine the degree of influence of different light regimes in seed germination of S. cana. Two experiments were carried out: T1-evaluation of different methods of dormancy overcoming (intact seeds (control), T2-imbibition of the intact seeds for 24 hours (in distilled water), T3-scarified seeds with sandpaper n° 100 in the hilum opposite region, T4-scarified seeds with sandpaper n° 100 in the region the hilo opposite region and imbibition in water (in distilled water) for 24 hours; T5-imbibition in water at 80°C); 2-Influence of light quality on seed germination and vigor (white light, red light, far red light and absence of light). The evaluated parameters were: first JEAI, 32(5): 1-9, 2019; Article no.JEAI.47671 2 germination count, percentage of germination, IVG (Germination speed index), MGT (Mean germination time). Treatments were compared by Tukey at 5% probability. The best method for overcoming seed dormancy was mechanical scarification with sandpaper nº 100. The germination of the seeds of S. cana can be classified as indifferent to the luminosity, despite germinative response be greater under white and red light. Original Research Article
