Old-growth tropical forests harbor an immense diversity of tree species but are rapidly being cleared, while secondary forests that regrow on abandoned agricultural lands increase in extent. We assess how tree species richness and composition recover during secondary succession across gradients in environmental conditions and anthropogenic disturbance in an unprecedented multisite analysis for the Neotropics. Secondary forests recover remarkably fast in species richness but slowly in species composition. Secondary forests take a median time of five decades to recover the species richness of old-growth forest (80% recovery after 20 years) based on rarefaction analysis. Full recovery of species composition takes centuries (only 34% recovery after 20 years). A dual strategy that maintains both old-growth forests and species-rich secondary forests is therefore crucial for biodiversity conservation in human-modified tropical landscapes.

RESUMO -(Florística e fitossociologia de um remanescente de vegetação caducifólia espinhosa arbórea em Caruaru, Pernambuco). A Vegetação Caducifólia Espinhosa (VCE) que recobre a maior parte do semi-árido, vulgarmente chamada caatinga, é bastante diversificada em função de diferenciações climáticas e morfopedológicas. Como pouco se sabe sobre suas características nos limites de sua distribuição, como na região fisiográfica do Agreste no planalto da Borborema, foi realizado o levantamento florístico e fitossociológico de uma área do município de Caruaru, Pernambuco. Foram amostrados todos os indivíduos com diâmetro do caule ao nível do solo ≥ 3 cm e altura total ≥ 1 m, presentes em 36 parcelas de 10 × 20m (total de 0,72 ha). Foram coletadas 96 espécies, distribuídas por 41 famílias, com 55 espécies amostradas no levantamento fitossociológico. A maioria delas é comum a outras áreas secas do sertão nordestino, embora algumas também ocorram em ambientes com maior disponibilidade hídrica. Densidade (3.810 indivíduos ha -1 ) e área basal (24,9m 2 ha -1 ) totais e as distribuições de diâmetros foram na faixa encontrada em outras áreas da VCE, mas o número de plantas com altura acima de 8m foi maior, quase o dobro da que tinha o maior número registrado. Também as espécies mais importantes foram as mesmas encontradas em outras áreas da VCE e foram distintas das encontradas nas Florestas Estacionais de Altitude (FEA, brejos), na Vegetação Caducifólia não Espinhosa (VCNE, carrasco) e nas Florestas Ombrófilas das Terras Baixas (FOTB, Mata Atlântica), do Nordeste. Numa análise de agrupamento com base na flora, as FOTB formaram um grupo separado e no outro, VCE e FEA foram mais semelhantes que VCNE. Estruturalmente, VCE tem menos plantas de pequeno porte que FEA e VCNE e tem menos plantas com porte grande que FEA e mais que VCNE. A vegetação na área de Agreste em Caruaru é uma VCE arbórea, com porte alto e presença de algumas poucas espécies mais comuns em locais mais úmidos que o núcleo do Sertão nordestino.Palavras-chave -Nordeste, fisionomia, vegetação caducifólia espinhosa, semi-árido, caatinga

Resilient secondary tropical forests? Although deforestation is rampant across the tropics, forest has a strong capacity to regrow on abandoned lands. These “secondary” forests may increasingly play important roles in biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, and landscape restoration. Poorter et al . analyzed the patterns of recovery in forest attributes (related to soil, plant functioning, structure, and diversity) in 77 secondary forest sites in the Americas and West Africa. They found that different attributes recovered at different rates, with soil recovering in less than a decade and species diversity and biomass recovering in little more than a century. The authors discuss how these findings can be applied in efforts to promote forest restoration. —AMS

RESUMO -(Diversidade de herbáceas em microhabitats rochoso, plano e ciliar em uma área de caatinga, Caruaru, PE, Brasil). Objetivou-se avaliar a influência da heterogeneidade micro-espacial no aumento da fitodiversidade herbácea em uma área de caatinga de Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brasil. Microhabitats rochosos, planos e ciliares foram selecionados, e nesses foi realizado um levantamento qualiquantitativo das herbáceas ocorrentes em 35 parcelas de 1 m 2 , em cada microhabitat. Todas as ervas nas parcelas foram contadas, marcadas e identificadas, coletando-se também outras espécies herbáceas ocorrentes entre as parcelas. A riqueza taxonômica total de herbáceas foi mais elevada ao se considerar o conjunto dos microhabitats. A flora total foi de 62 espécies, 42 destas ocorrendo no microhabitat rochoso, 32 no plano e 39 no ciliar. O índice de similaridade florística de Jaccard entre os microhabitats variou de 42% (plano × ciliar) a 57% (rochoso × plano). Isoladamente, as riquezas de espécies nos microhabitats plano, rochoso e ciliar foram de 3,09; 3,88 e de 4,18 espécies (ln ind.)-1 e as diversidades, pelo índice de Shannon-Wiener, foram de 2,08; 2,09 e de 2,52 nats.ind.-1 , respectivamente. Malvaceae, Euphorbiaceae e Poaceae apresentaram maior número de espécies. A densidade total de herbáceas foi de 4.009 ind.105 m -2 , sendo 1.749 indivíduos do microhabitat rochoso, 1.020 do ciliar e 1.240 do plano. Cerca de 19% das espécies eram trepadeiras e foram consideradas como um grupo importante para conservação da biodiversidade local. Evidenciou-se a importância da inclusão das herbáceas dos diferentes microhabitats, para a determinação da riqueza florística da caatinga. The influence of the micro spatial heterogeneity in the diversity of herb plants was evaluated in a caatinga site at Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brazil. Three microhabitats were chosen: a flat area with a rocky yellow podzolic soil, a similar area with the same soil type but without rocks and an area at the border of a small intermittent stream but that is never covered by floods. In each microhabitat, 35 plots, 1m 2 each, were marked, at random, and all herb plants identified and counted. Plants were also collected and identified in the same microhabitats outside the plots. A total of 62 species were found in the three microsites, 32 in the flat area, 42 in the rocky area and 39 in the stream area.
