Mixtures of green manure species, including Leguminosae and Poaceae, planted prior to commercial crops may incorporate more biomass than Leguminosae alone and fix more nitrogen than Poaceae alone. Biomass and nitrogen incorporation of three plant treatmens were compared under irrigation condition. In two mixture treatments, the same seven green manure species were planted together but with different seeding proportions. Treatment (1) (low-legume) had 50% the recommended seeding rate of the legume species (jack beans, cowpea and sunn hemp) and 150% the recommended seeding rate of the non-legume species (maize, pearl millet, sorghum and sun flower). The other treatment (2) (high-legume) had opposite proportions. In the third treatment, no green manure plants were sown and weed plants were allowed to grow. The results showed that biomass (9.1 and 8.2 Mg ha -1 ) and nitrogen accumulation (160 and 161 kg ha -1 ) did not differ between the low-legume and high-legume treatments, respectively, which were 2.5 times higher than those of the weed treatment (3.3 Mg ha -1 and 58.1 kg ha -1 ). Despite the higher non-legume biomass proportion and lower nitrogen concentration, the low-legume treatment symbiotically fixed as much N (52 kg ha -1 ) as the high-legume treatment because sorghum derived more N from the atmosphere (79 %) and maize in the same range as the legume species (37 to 54%). Therefore, sorghum and maize can have high N endophytic fixation and green manure prior to commercial crops can be produced both with legume and Poaceae species mixed together, providing a high input of N and biomass in a short period.

Resumo -A fixação biológica do nitrogênio (FBN) pode ser limitada pela alta disponibilidade de nitrogênio (N). A fração argila e o teor de matéria orgânica do solo controlam a disponibilidade do N, sendo possível que esses atributos venham a interferir na fixação simbiótica em solos adubados com N. Com base nesse pressuposto, objetivou-se com o presente trabalho avaliar o efeito da adubação nitrogenada na fixação biológica do N em feijão-caupi cultivado em cinco solos, com ampla variação nos seus atributos físicos, químicos e mineralógicos, representativos das áreas de cultivo da Savana de Roraima. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, utilizando-se vasos de polietileno rígido com 5 dm 3 de solo coletado na camada de 0-0,20 m. Empregou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial (5x5), sendo 5 classes de solos (LAdx; LVd; PAdx; PVAd; RYve), 4 doses de nitrogênio (0; 20; 40; 80 kg ha -1 ) em plantas inoculadas e uma testemunha (sem inoculação e sem adubação nitrogenada), com 4 repetições. Utilizaram-se sementes da cultivar de feijão-caupi BRS Guariba inoculadas com a estirpe de Bradyrhizobium BR 3262. Avaliaram-se: número, tamanho e massa da vagem, massa seca da raiz, número de nódulos e massa seca de nódulos. A FBN proporcionou aumento nas variáveis estudadas em todos os solos. As doses de N em plantas inoculadas proporcionaram incrementos significativos que variaram entre as classes de solo, sendo de 3 a 18% nos componentes de produção e de 8 a 70% para as demais variáveis. A adubação nitrogenada afeta a nodulação em feijão-caupi, sendo restritiva em alguns solos. Palavras-chave -Classes de solos. Fixação biológica de nitrogênio. Fertilidade do solo. The soil clay fraction and organic matter content control the availability of N, and it is possible that these attributes affect the symbiotic fixation in soils fertilized with N. Based in that assumption, the objective with this study was to evaluate the effect of N fertilization on biological fixation in cowpea grown in five soils, with wide variation in their physical, chemical and and mineralogical attributes, representative of the growing areas of savannah of Roraima. The experiment was carried out in polyethylene pots in randomized blocks design with factorial arrangement 5x5, 5 soils (LAdx; LVd; PAdx; PVAd; RYve), 4 doses of nitrogen (0, 20, 40, 80 kg ha -1 ) in inoculated plants and a control (without inoculation and nitrogen fertilization), with 4 replications. The seeds of BRS Guariba were inoculated with Bradyrhizobium strain BR 3262. The variables studied were: number, size and mass of the pod, root dry mass, nodule number and dry weight of nodules. The BNF provided an increase in the variables studied in all soils.
