Besides its extreme climate conditions, the Caatinga (a type of tropical seasonal forest) hosts an impressive faunal and floristic biodiversity. In the last 50 years there has been a considerable increase in the number of studies in the area. Here we aimed to present a review of these studies, focusing on four main fields: vertebrate ecology, plant ecology, human ecology, and ethnobiology. Furthermore, we identify directions for future research. We hope that the present paper will help defining actions and strategies for the conservation of the biological diversity of the Caatinga.

Tannins are compounds of great interest in chemistry and ecology. They have various effects on food digestibility and the performance of animals. In this work, the chemistry, the biological activity and the ecology of tannins are examined. A brief discussion of several analytical methods for the determination of tannins is presented. Keywords: tannins; colorimetric assay; biological activity.
Palavras-chave: sistemas agroflorestais, etnobotânica, conservação da biodiversidade, florestas secas, plantas alimentícias, plantas medicinais ABSTRACT -(Contribution of homegardens to the conservation of caatinga plants, Municipality of Caruaru, Pernambuco State, Brazil). The research presented here was undertaken in a rural area within the municipality of Caruaru. It was designed to evaluate the floristic diversity of homegardens and their role in conserving local diversity. Semi-structured interviews with the people responsible for these plots were carried out, in association with the technique of guided excursions. The sizes of the homegardens were measured, and all woody plants with a DGL (Diameter at Ground Level) ≥ 3 cm were recorded. A total of 25 plots were examined, containing 84 species of plants, belonging to 68 genera and 35 families. The most species rich families were Euphorbiaceae (10 species), Anacardiaceae (7), Caesalpiniaceae (6), Mimosaceae (6), and Myrtaceae (6). Introduced species (55 species) were most prevalent. Eventhough native species were less frequent than introduced species in these homegardens, these plots are important for the conservation of local diversity, principally because of the protection they provide to local woody species by reducing the impact of tree harvesting. This information indicates that, when properly managed, homegardens represent a low-cost alternative for conserving local diversity.
In spite of heavy harvesting pressure on some of the most popular medicinal plant species, there are very few published studies concerning their conservation the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. In light of this fact, the present work sought to evaluate the local conservation and the harvesting sustainability of medicinal plants in an region of caatinga vegetation employing a fusion of biological and cultural approaches. Ethnobotanical methodologies and techniques were employed in the community of "Riachão de "Malhada de Pedra"" (municipality of Caruaru, state of Pernambuco, Brazil) in order to document local knowledge concerning medicinal plants and to examine the availability of those plants in a caatinga vegetation fragment located near that community. A total of 21 medicinal plant species were identified in the area and classified according to ecological factors and local uses. Two plants (Ziziphus joazeiro and Myracrodruon urundeuva) stood out has having high priority for conservation efforts. Sixteen species were identified as having populations adequate for harvesting through a system of pre-determined quotas, while four species were deemed sufficiently abundant to be harvested without risk of causing significant impact on their sustainability.
-(Inter-annual variations in the floristic and population structure of an herbaceous community of "caatinga" in Pernambuco, Brazil). The influence of climatic variations on the herbaceous component of the "caatinga" vegetation was examined in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. A total of 105 1 × 1 m-plots were established, of which 35 were in a level micro-habitat, 35 in a riparian micro-habitat, and 35 in a stony microhabitat. During two consecutive years all herbaceous plants in these plots were counted, measured (height and diameter), and collected for identification. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index and the equitability were calculated for each year, as well as the density, frequency, dominance, total basal area and importance index for each species. The total annual pluviometric was 819.5 and 448.8 mm in 2002 and 2003, respectively. The herbaceous flora in the study area was composed of 71 species, of which 58 were sampled in the plots. The families with the greatest species richness were Malvaceae (8 species), Euphorbiaceae (7), Poaceae (6), Convolvulaceae (4), Fabaceae (4), and Portulacaceae (4). The diversity indices were 2.66 and 3.01 nats ind -1 in 2002 and 2003, respectively. The density, frequency, dominance and importance value of herbaceous populations, as well as, the height and diameter of plants were low in the dryer year. The riparian group was the most isolated of the microhabitats examined, both in terms of its floristic and its population structure. Annual seasonal climatic variations greatly modified these populations structure during the course of this study, emphasizing the fact that longterm studies are needed in order to better understand the dynamics of the herbaceous component of the "caatinga" vegetation.
