Dominant species significantly affect interspecific relationships, community structure, and ecosystem function. In the field, dominant species are often identified by their high importance values. Selective foraging on dominant species is a common phenomenon in ecology. Our hypothesis is that dominant plant groups with high importance values are more susceptible to leaf‐mining insects at the regional level. Here, we used the Saihanwula National Nature Reserve as a case study to examine the presence–absence patterns of leaf‐mining insects on different plants in a forest‐grassland ecotone in Northeast China. We identified the following patterns: (1) After phylogenetic correction, plants with high importance values are more likely to host leafminers at the species, genus, or family level. (2) Other factors including phylogenetic isolation, life form, water ecotype, and phytogeographical type of plants have different influences on the relationship between plant dominance and leafminer presence. In summary, the importance value is a valid predictor of the presence of consumers, even when we consider the effects of plant phylogeny and other plant attributes. Dominant plant groups are large and susceptible targets of leaf‐mining insects. The consistent leaf‐mining distribution pattern across different countries, vegetation types, and plant taxa can be explained by the “species‐area relationship” or the “plant apparency hypothesis.”

The ecological apparency hypothesis seeks to understand the dynamics of use that a particular species has through its availability in vegetation areas. According to this hypothesis, apparent plants are the most collected and used by humans. This hypothesis was tested in the rural community of Santa Rita, municipality of Congo, in Cariri microregion (Paraíba state, Northeast Brazil). We calculated the use value (UV) for each species. For the phytosociological inventory, we adopted the point-quadrant method, plotting 500 points distributed in the vegetation areas of the community, registering the perimeter measurements and height of 2000 plants. Interviews were conducted with householders, totaling 98 informants (41 men and 57 women), and 24 species, 21 genera, and 11 families were recorded. The cited species were grouped into 11 utility categories. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to correlate phytosociological and ethnobotanical data. The use values of the species did not correlate with phytosociological parameters. Regarding the use categories, there were positive correlations for fuel (UV with dominance and basal area), construction (UV with all phytosociological parameters), fodder (UV with all parameters), and poison/abortion categories (UV with density and frequency). Ecological apparency significantly explained the local importance of useful plants in fuel, construction, and fodder categories, and less significantly for poison/abortion.

RESUMOGrande parte do semiárido brasileiro encontra-se em avançado processo de degradação e poucos estudos direcionam seu desenvolvimento em consonância com essa realidade. Diante deste contexto, foi realizado um levantamento etnobotânico, a fim de subsidiar pesquisas sobre fitofármacos ocorrentes em espécies da Caatinga. Para tal, foram aplicados questionários a 256 famílias, visando a documentar o conhecimento local referente às espécies arbustivo-arbóreas utilizadas como medicinais pela população rural do município de Monteiro-PB. Procurou-se, por meio do levantamento florístico de um fragmento florestal, com aproximadamente 30 anos de conservação, verificar a distribuição das espécies citadas nas entrevistas. Constataram-se 37 espécies identificadas no fragmento florestal avaliado e 38 no levantamento etnobotânico, com 14 espécies em comum entre os levantamentos. As espécies Myracrodruon urundeuva, Sideroxylon obtusifolium, Amburana cearensis, Triplaris gardneriana, Anadenanthera colubrina, Hymenaea courbaril e Bauhinia cheilantha apresentaram-se promissoras para pesquisas voltadas à obtenção de fitofármacos.Palavras-chave: riqueza florística, etnobotânica, fitoterápicos. Caatinga Species as an Alternative to the Development of New Phytochemicals ABSTRACTMuch of the Brazilian semiarid region is in advanced stage of degradation, and few studies direct their development in line with this reality. In this work, we carried out an ethnobotanical survey comprising 256 families. The survey aimed to identify the species used in traditional medicine by the population of the municipality of Monteiro, Paraiba state. A floristic inventory of all species was conducted in a forest fragment with 30 years of conservation in order to identify the availability of the species that are most used by the local population. Thirty-eight species were identified in the ethnobotanical survey and 37 in the forest fragment; of these, 14 were common to both groups. Myracrodruon urundeuva, Sideroxylon obtusifolium, Amburana cearensis Triplaris gardneriana, Anadenanthera colubrina, Hymenaea courbaril, and Bauhinia cheilantha were identified as the most potential species for research on phytochemicals.
