The present study evaluated the effects of inclusion of glycerol in the diet of Nile tilapia juveniles on growth performance, biochemical changes in blood, and carcass composition. We used 300 Nile tilapia juveniles with an average initial weight of 29.15 ± 8.40 g and 11.55 ± 0.87 cm in length, distributed in 20 fiberglass tanks with a capacity of 250 L. The experiments followed a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replications during 79 days. The animals were fed diets containing four concentrations of glycerol (25 g kg À1 , 50 g kg À1 , 75 g kg À1 and 100 g kg À1 ) and a control diet without glycerol. HDL was the only biochemical parameter, that showed statistically different (P < 0.05) results; it was higher in the groups fed with 0 and 75 g kg À1 glycerol compared to the other groups. No significant difference was observed in the results from the carcass composition of tilapia juvenile fed with the different glycerol levels, except for lipids (P < 0.05), which showed the highest values in fish fed with 50 g kg À1 glycerol and the lowest in fish fed with 100 g kg À1 . Glycerol can be used in fish diets as an energy supplement without causing damage to growth performance or to the biochemical and carcass composition of Nile Tilapia juveniles.
Palavras-chave: avaliação de alimentos, farinha de resíduos de tilápia, fonte protéica, reversão sexual, tilápia Effects of Feeding Tilapia Filleting By-product Meal for Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) During the Sexual Reversion PhaseABSTRACT -The effects of feeling tilapia filleting by-product meal (TF) for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus L.) during the sexual reversion phase were evaluated. Three hundred and seventy-five 2-3-d larvaes were allotted to 25 30L-aquariums, according to a complete randomized design with five treatments of five replications. Aquarium with 15 larvae comprised the experimental unit. Diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isoenergetic and contained 38.6% of digestible protein and 3,800 kcal of ED/kg, on increasing levels of TF (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20%). Mean temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and electrical conductivity rates of water during the experimental period were of 24.53 ± 1.60ºC; 4.81 ± 0.68 mg/L; 7.70 ± 0.25; and 175.97 ± 108.46 μS/cm respectively. At the end of the experiment, no differences were reported for final weight and length, condition factor, survival and sexual reversion index of larvae fed FT. It can be included up to 20% FT in diets for Nile tilapia during the sexual reversion phase, with no deleterious effects on performance.
Palavras-chave: avaliação de alimentos, digestibilidade, ingredientes protéicos, nutrição, tilápia do Nilo Apparent Digestibility of Energy and Protein of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and Corvina (Plagioscion squamosissimus) by-product Meal, and Canela Crayfish (Macrobrachium amazonicum) Meal for NileABSTRACT -The trial was conducted to evaluate the apparent digestibility coefficients (CDa) of gross energy (EB) and crude protein (PB) of tilapia (FT) and corvina (FC) processing by-product meal, and canela crayfish (Macrobrachium amazonicum) meal (FM), for Nile tilapia fingerlings. It was used 3.960 fish with an average initial weight of 293.38 ± 5.67 g, distributed in 18 net-ponds with 5 m 3 , with 220 fish per experimental unit (44 fish/m 3 ) in a 3 × 2 factorial scheme composed of three levels of crude protein (25, 30 and 35%) and two levels of digestible energy (3,250 and 3,500 kcal/kg). Feeding was performed four times a day (9:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.) until apparent satiety of the animals. No differences were observed for weight gain, survival rate, apparent feed conversion and specific growing rate. Nevertheless, there was a difference on visceral fat deposition which was higher for animals fed ration with higher energy level. It was not observed influence of levels of protein and energy of the diet in contents of moisture, crude protein, mineral matter and lipids in the fish fillets, either. Rations containing 25% of crude protein and 3,250 kcal/kg of digestible energy promote better performance results.

Densities of farming did not influence carcass yield, but they affected total length, which was higher in fish raised in low density, which did not differ from those raised in intermediate density. Fish raised in lower density showed the greatest lipid deposition, but they did not significantly differ from those stocked in intermediate density. Erythrocyte variables like total erythrocytes, hemoglobin, hematocrit, average corpuscular volume, average corpuscular hemoglobin concentrations and average corpuscular hemoglobin did not present statistical differences among the used densities and they remain in the normal range for the species. Levels of glucose in the blood did not differ significantly among the analyzed densities. Stocking densities do not influence erythrocyte parameters, glucose level neither carcass yields of pacu fish. Density 200 fish/cage results in higher final weight and weight gain; however, it reduces productivity per area and increases lipid deposition of the fish.
This study proposed a method for identifying areas appropriate for fish farming in ground-excavated ponds using data obtained from public institutions. The method was applied to three cities located in the central-southern region of Paraná State, Brazil. In order to select appropriate areas, a geographic information system (GIS) was created using data from a digital elevation model (DEM), as well as data on soil occupation and type. A variable reclassification model (VRM) was created, and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method was applied to establish weights for a multi-criteria assessment of the factors. Non-classifiable areas and areas with constraints were identified and removed from the analysis. The sites classified as highly suitable or suitable represented 33.270.79 ha (18.71% of the total area), while the restricted areas represented 54,427.91 ha (30.60% of the total area). This method may represent a useful tool for decision making in the context of regional planning and may be used in the establishment of public policy and in the allocation of resources for aquaculture development.
