The present study evaluated the effects of inclusion of glycerol in the diet of Nile tilapia juveniles on growth performance, biochemical changes in blood, and carcass composition. We used 300 Nile tilapia juveniles with an average initial weight of 29.15 ± 8.40 g and 11.55 ± 0.87 cm in length, distributed in 20 fiberglass tanks with a capacity of 250 L. The experiments followed a completely randomized design with five treatments and four replications during 79 days. The animals were fed diets containing four concentrations of glycerol (25 g kg À1 , 50 g kg À1 , 75 g kg À1 and 100 g kg À1 ) and a control diet without glycerol. HDL was the only biochemical parameter, that showed statistically different (P < 0.05) results; it was higher in the groups fed with 0 and 75 g kg À1 glycerol compared to the other groups. No significant difference was observed in the results from the carcass composition of tilapia juvenile fed with the different glycerol levels, except for lipids (P < 0.05), which showed the highest values in fish fed with 50 g kg À1 glycerol and the lowest in fish fed with 100 g kg À1 . Glycerol can be used in fish diets as an energy supplement without causing damage to growth performance or to the biochemical and carcass composition of Nile Tilapia juveniles.
The dietary total and available requirement of tryptophan of Nile tilapia fingerlings was determined using linear regression analysis. Six hundred fish (3.4 ± 0.0 g) were fed diets containing 296.4 g/kg of crude protein and 14.1 MJ/kg of digestible energy. Five extruded diets containing 2.5, 3.0, 3.4, 3.8 and 4.2 g/kg of total tryptophan were evaluated. Fish were fed four times a day during 45 days. Final body weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio and net protein utilization of fish fed Trp 3.4 and Trp 3.8 diets were improved compared to fish fed Trp 2.5 and Trp 4.2 diets. No significant differences in survival rate, whole‐body moisture and ash were observed. Whole‐body amino acid profile of fish fed different diets did not differ statistically (p > .05). Fish fed Trp 3.0 and Trp 3.4 diets showed higher tryptophan retention compared to fish fed Trp 2.5 and Trp 4.2 diets. Excepting blood glucose, no effects of dietary tryptophan on haematological parameters were observed. The dietary total tryptophan requirement of Nile tilapia fingerlings based on weight gain was estimated to be 3.4 g/kg (11.0 g/kg of dietary crude protein) or 3.0 g/kg of available tryptophan (11.0 g/kg of dietary digestible protein).

Palavras-chave: anestesia, espécie exótica, manejo, piscicultura Eugenol and benzocaine as anesthetics for juvenile common carp (Cyprinus carpio)ABSTRACT Anesthetics such as benzocaine and eugenol are efficiently used in fish to reduce stress both in the management of animals as for transport and reproduction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the induction times and recovery of juvenile common carp (Cyprinius carpio) exposed to both anesthetics, benzocaine (12,5; 25; 37,5; 50; 62,5; 75; 87,5; 100 e 112,5 mg L -1 ) and eugenol (12,5; 25; 37,5; 50; 62,5; 75 e 87,5 mg L -1 ). Hundred and thirty six juveniles were used with a mean weight of 1.92 ± 0.59 g and mean total length of 5.25 ± 0.52 cm. The benzocaine proved more efficient than eugenol over time, thus to induce coma as to recover the scape and also with regard to survival. The doses of benzocaine with best results were 87.5 and 100 mg L -1 . Eugenol delay resulted in the induction and recovery of the animals, and also presented anesthetic mortality when doses were increased.
Desenvolvimento do surubim do iguaçu steindachneridion sp., Garavello (1991) AbstractThe experiment verified the development of Iguaçu´s surubim (Steindachneridion sp.) larvae, submitted to different diets in darkness. 35L-aquariums were used, in a completely randomized design, with five treatments and four repetitions. Each aquarium had 15 larvae with 8,35±0,85 mm and 6,75±0,64 mg, and the treatments were the following diets: Artemia(A); ration(R); zooplankton(Z); Artemia+ration(A+R); and zooplankton+ration (Z+R); After 29 days, the treatments A+R and Z+R was 1036 mg and 859 mg, respectively, significantly higher (P < 0,01), that A and Z, with 536 and 270 mg, respectively. In the treatment R there was no larvae survival, and presented high cannibalism (71%), which was also observed in other treatments, in smaller rates. This results led to the conclusions that the association of live and artificial diets in darkness provided best development, but it does not reduce the cannibalism.
