Prevalence and risk factors for bovine brucellosis in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil

Abstract: A study was conducted to verify that the State of Santa Catarina has maintained a low prevalence of bovine brucellosis, which would allow the state to move forward with implementing strategies for disease eradication. The state was divided into five regions. In each region, a predetermined number of randomly selected properties was sampled. In each property, blood samples were collected from randomly selected cows with ages equal to or greater than 24 months. Sera from the animals were submitted to a serial te… Show more

“…Thus, the presence of flooded areas in a property can promote the dissemination of disease. In three states of the Brazilian northeast -Bahia, Pernambuco and Maranhão -and also in Santa Catarina, this variable has emerged as a risk factor associated with bovine brucellosis infection (ALMEIDA et al, 2016;ALVES et al, 2009;BAUMGARTEN et al, 2016;BORBA et al, 2013). It is worth pointing out that this factor is related to the persistence of disease within an infected property rather than as a form of transmission between herds (CRAWFORD et al, 1990).…”

“…The State of Santa Catarina, which had the lowest prevalence of infected herds and animals, and prohibited vaccination and initiated the implementation of eradication strategies, also conducted a second prevalence study that revealed no change (BAUMGARTEN et al, 2016).…”

“…The states of Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Rio Grande do Sul carried out a second study on the prevalence of brucellosis. Of the 7 states included in this study a decrease in the prevalence of infected herds, as a consequence of the immunization program, was observed only in the states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, and Rondônia (BARDDAL et al;BAUMGARTEN et al, 2016;DIAS et al, 2016;INLAMEA et al, 2016;LEAL FILHO et al, 2016;OLIVEIRA et al, 2016;SILVA et al, 2016).…”

“…The state of Santa Catarina, which had the lowest prevalence of infected herds and animals, prohibited vaccinations and initiated the implementation of eradication strategies. Santa Catarina also conducted a second study that did not indicate a change in prevalence (BAUMGARTEN et al, 2016 (MARVULO et al, 2009). At the time, it was recommended that the state implement a vaccination program for Regions 1, 2, 3 (south coast) and 7 (north coast), areas with increased prevalence of infection.…”
