Performance of shallot (Allium cepa var. ascalonicum) derived from true seed under a dry condition area

Abstract: To reduce the dependence of bulbs as planting material, the innovation technology of shallot (Allium cepa var. ascalonicum) cultivation with using true shallot seed (TSS) as planting material was tried. Four cultivars namely Bima Brebes, Trisula, Tuk Tuk, and Sanren were planted at Laleten Village, Malaka District, from April to December 2018. TSS seedlings were raised with a 10x15cm planting spacing or 2,000 plants/30m−2. The aim of this research was to evaluate the using TSS at the shallot cultivation in the… Show more

“…This adds to the production costs for maintaining plants, even though the lower yields as shown by the results of this study. The growth of seed origin plants is slower than the origin of the bulbs because the bulbs have nutrient reserves that can be absorbed by plants in their initial growth, while seedlings of seed origin plants do not have food reserves so they must look for themselves from the surrounding environment (Devy et al 2020;Hantari et al 2020). “…The research was conducted at Laleten Village, Malaka District, NTT Province, Indonesia, from March to August 2018. This area is located at an altitude of 55 m above sea The Effect of True Shallot Seed (TSS) Varieties and Population on Growth and Bulb Yield level and has a monthly rainfall of 0 to1,435 mm, an average temperature of 24-34C and a dry tropical climate (Devy et al 2020).…”

“…Nevertheless, its productivity is still low (about 8 tons/ha). In dry area of Laleten, Malaka District, the estimated productivity of fresh bulbs per hectare for Tuk Tuk, Sanren, Bima Brebes and Trisula varieties of TSS were 5.28, 6.05, 8.41 and 7.97 tons, respectively (Devy et al 2020). Therefore, implementation of innovation technology such as a superior variety, optimal nutrition, control of pests and diseases optimally and increasing the density of plants are required (Awas et al 2010;Biru 2015;Shimeles 2014).…”
