Background and objectives: Boxing is a popular combat sport that requires high intensity and cooperation. However, there are limited data about the influence of boxing matches on blood parameters. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the match-induced changes in the metabolic, hormonal, and inflammatory status in male elite boxers. Materials and methods: High-level 20 male boxers with more than 5 years experience in boxing voluntarily participated in this study. Venous blood samples of the boxers, before and after combat, were taken for determination of the plasma parameters. Results: Our results indicated that a 9-min boxing match caused significant increases in plasma energy fuels (glucose and lactate), metabolic hormones (insulin, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, and growth hormone), inflammatory markers (interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)), muscle damage indicators (alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST)), and oxidative stress marker (SOD). A decrease in total oxidant status (TOS) was also considered. However, there were no significant alterations in the plasma levels of androgenic hormone (free and total testosterone), anabolic hormone (IGF-1), lipids (total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)), kidney function markers (creatinine and urea), and minerals (iron (Fe) and magnesium (Mg)). Conclusion: Elevations in the level of energy fuels and metabolic hormones of the boxers could be taken as a reflection of high-energy turnover during combat performance. The increases in inflammatory and tissue damage indicators may possibly be an indication of traumatic injury. Understanding the biochemical changes that occur during boxing match could be valuable to optimize the performance improvement of the athletes.
In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of 6 weeks of zinc supplementation and weight training on blood lipids of sedentary and athletes.Research group consists of total 40 males; 20 athletes who do regularly physical exercises and 20 sedentary volunteers. The volunteers were divided into four groups. These groups were constituted in that way: the first group is a natural sedentary group which called control group as well (S); the second group is another sedentary group which is supplied with only zinc (Z+S); the third group is training group which composing of athletes and is supplied with zinc (Z+T); the fourth group is the natural training group or athletes (T). From the beginning of the study to the end of 6-weeks of training, the participants gave blood samples before and after every application order to measure the total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol and the levels of Triglyceride. This study identifies that the values of the total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and Triglyceride of the groups which were supplied with zinc supplement decreased, whereas the levels of HDL cholesterol increased in these groups. Consequently, this work demonstrates that the 6-weeks zinc supplement and training can make a significant contribution to the performance by changing positively the levels of blood lipid.
This study aims to investigate perceptions towards eating habits and obesity in students receiving sports education in Turkey. The sample consisted of 360 randomly chosen students, who received sports education at Firat University, Agri Ibrahim Cecen University, Ardahan University and Mugla Sitki Kocman University. The sample was formed by adopting the convenience sampling method. For data collection, the ‘Three-factor eating questionnaire’ was used. The data were analysed for normality distribution in terms of the questionnaire and its subscales, which proved that the data provided a normality distribution. ‘Independent samples t-test’ was conducted to evaluate the level of differentiation in terms of the independent variables of gender and taking courses about nutrition and obesity. ‘One-way Variance Analysis’ was conducted to evaluate the level of differentiation in the variables of grade and the universities of the participants. The development level of the location where the students lived, income levels and cultural activities affected their eating. Keywords: Education, sports, students, obesity, eating habits.
This study, aims to examine the different variables in how the students in sports high school copes with stress. In this study, screening method has been used and 242 questionnaires were distributed to the participants by the number of students. Out of 204, 201 has been returned. Some of these questionnaires has been without valid reasons, such as incomplete questionnaires are set to leave. In total, 188 of the questionnaires has been found worthy of analysis. Accordingly, 188 participant's information (% 68.6 Male, n=129, %31.4 Female, n=59) was taken into account. Data of this research has been developed by Personal Information Form and Folkman and Lazarus (1980), which was adopted to Turkish by Şahin ve Durak (1995) under the name of Stress Coping Styles Participant's ways to cope with stress has been analyzed depending on their gender, age, income and sportive activities. In this research, a significant difference has been found between coping with stress and gender difference. Female participant's ways of coping with stress has been found rather weaker, then to those of male participants. In contrast, there is no significant difference that is observed between income, physical fitness and age, in terms of coping with stress.Administration board of the school, teachers and the parents of the female students may contribute by education and planning, to female participant's ways of coping with stress.
