Abstract:Water resources are important and irreplaceable natural and economic resources. Achieving a balance between economic prosperity and protection of water resource environments is a major issue in China. This article develops a data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach with undesirable outputs by using Seiford's linear converting method to estimate water use efficiencies for 30 provinces in China, from 2008-2016,and then analyzes the influencing factors while using a DEA-Tobit model. The findings show that the overall water use efficiency of the measured Chinese provinces, when considering sewage emissions as the undesirable output, is 0.582. Thus, most regions still need improvement. Provinces with the highest water efficiency are located in economically developed Eastern China. The spatial pattern of water use efficiency in China is consistent with the general pattern of regional economic development. This study implies that factors like export dependence, technical progress, and educational value have a positive influence on water use efficiency. Further, while industrial structure has had a negative impact, government intervention has had little impact on water use efficiency. These research results will provide a scientific basis for the government to make plans for water resource development, and it may be helpful in improving regional sustainable development.
We previously reported that mosquito densoviruses (MDVs) are potential vectors for delivering foreign nucleic acids into mosquito cells. However, considering existing expression strategies, recombinant viruses would inevitably become replication-defective viruses and lose their ability for secondary transmission. The packaging limitations of the virion represent a barrier for the development of MDVs for viral paratransgenesis or as high-efficiency bioinsecticides. Herein, we report the development of a non-defective recombinant Aedes aegypti densovirus (AaeDV) miRNA expression system, mediated by an artificial intron, using an intronic miRNA expression strategy. We demonstrated that this recombinant vector could be used to overexpress endogenous miRNAs or to decrease endogenous miRNAs by generating antisense sponges to explore the biological functions of miRNAs. In addition, the vector could express antisense-miRNAs to induce efficient gene silencing in vivo and in vitro. The recombinant virus effectively self-replicated and retained its secondary transmission ability, similar to the wild-type virus. The recombinant virus was also genetically stable. This study demonstrated the first construction of a non-defective recombinant MDV miRNA expression system, which represents a tool for the functional analysis of mosquito genes and lays the foundation for the application of viral paratransgenesis for dengue virus control.
Purpose of the Study
Care challenges have been described for hospitalized morbidly obese (MO) patients. These challenges likely persist post-discharge. As a result, nursing homes (NH) may be reluctant to admit these patients, potentially leaving them “stranded in hospitals” with subsequent health deterioration and increased costs. This study sought to identify issues NHs consider in admissions decisions for MO patients transitioning out of hospitals. Design and Methods: IRB-approved surveys were mailed to nursing directors at federally-certified NHs in Arkansas (n=234) and Pennsylvania (n=710) to collect NH experience in the admission of patients weighing ≥325 pounds. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to summarize and identify predictors of MO patient admissions decisions.
Results
In total, 360 surveys were returned (38.1% response rate). Although two-thirds of respondents reported patient size as an admission barrier, only 6% reported that MO patients were always refused admission. Adjusted analysis showed that NHs with adequate staff were significantly (p=0.04) less likely to report obesity as an admission barrier while NHs reporting concerns about availability of bariatric equipment were significantly (p<0.0001) more likely to report obesity as a barrier.
Implications
Lack of staff and bariatric equipment in NHs appears to negatively affect the care transition of MO patients out of the hospital to NHs. Additional research, including examination of current regulations and reimbursement policies, should be undertaken to understand NH staffing and equipment acquisition decisions in light of the current obesity epidemic. Such research has implications for the optimal care of obese individuals during times of transition.
