The people of Tengger, Indonesia have used plants as traditional medicine for a long time. However, this local knowledge has not been well documented until recently. Our study aims to understand the utilization of plants in traditional medicine by the people of Tengger, who inhabit the Ngadisari village, Sukapura District, Probolinggo Regency, Indonesia. We conducted semi-structured and structured interviews with a total of 52 informants that represented 10% of the total family units in the village. The parameters observed in this study include species use value (SUV), family use value (FUV), plant part use (PPU), and the relative frequency of citation that was calculated based on fidelity level (FL). We successfully identified 30 species belonging to 28 genera and 20 families that have been used as a traditional medicine to treat 20 diseases. We clustered all the diseases into seven distinct categories. Among the recorded plant families, Poaceae and Zingiberaceae were the most abundant. Plant species within those families were used to treat internal medical diseases, respiratory-nose, ear, oral/dental, and throat problems. The plant species with the highest SUV was Foeniculum vulgare Mill. (1.01), whereas the Aloaceae family (0.86) had the highest FUV. Acorus calamus L. (80%) had the highest FL percentage. The leaves were identified as the most used plant part and decoction was the dominant mode of a medicinal preparation. Out of the plants and their uses documented in our study, 26.7% of the medicinal plants and 71.8% of the uses were novel. In conclusion, the diversity of medicinal plant uses in the Ngadisari village could contribute to the development of new plant-based drugs and improve the collective revenue of the local society.

Indonesia merupakan negara tropis dan agraris dengan biodiversitas tumbuhan terbesar kedua di dunia, setelah Brazil. Kondisi iklim tropis dan suburnya tanah menjadikan wilayah Indonesia sebagai salah satu Kawasan pertanian yang diperhitungkan di wilayah asia tenggara. Salah satu sentra agribisnis di Jawa Timur adalah kota Batu, Malang. Kota ini dikenal sebagai Kawasan Agropolitan dengan tanaman hortikultura sebagai komoditas unggulan. Industri pertanian dan perkebunan di wilayah tersebut berhasil menopang ekonomi masyarakat sekitar. Namun demikian, permasalahan limbah pertanian organik sebagai produk samping dari pengembangan industri pertanian di kota Batu menjadi hal yang harus diperhatikan bersama. Salah satu alternatif pengelolaan limbah atau sampah organik tersebut adalah pengembangan eco-enzyme. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini berupa pembuatan sabun antiseptic berbasis eco-enzyme. Sabun antiseptic ini mengambil nama Mizella yang berasal dari kata Mizu dan Ella. Mizu dalam Bahasa Jepang berarti Air dan Ella dalam Bahasa Prancis berarti kecantikan dan keindahan. Berdasarkan hasil survei didapatkan hasil sebagai berikut, sebanyak 80% responden menyatakan aroma, busa, kelembapan, kesegaran, pada sabun organik sudah sangat baik, sebanyak 73.3% responden menyatakan warna, penampilan, busa pada sabun organik Eco-Enzyme sudah sangat baik, sebanyak 76.7% responden menyatakan kualitas pembersihan dan kekesatan pada sabun organik Eco-Enzyme sudah sangat baik, sebanyak 83.3% responden menyatakan kehalusan pada sabun organik Eco-Enzyme sudah sangat baik.

Abstrak-Teh (Camellia sinensis) memiliki kandungan dan manfaat yang banyak, sehimgga diperlukan alternatif untuk mendapatkan benih teh dalam waktu yang singkat dan dalam jumlah banyak. Salah satu alternatif adalah dengan melakukan perbanyakan tanaman secara vegetatif melalui pendekatan bioteknologi yaitu teknik Kultur in Vitro dan teknik enkapsulasi embriosomatik yang dapat menghasilkan benih sintetik. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk produksi benih sintetik dari embriosomatik guna penyediaan benih yang dapat disimpan dalam waktu yang lama. Benih sintetik Teh dengan bahan tanam embriosomatik yang dienkapsulasi menggunakan alginat 4% sehingga kapsul tidak terlalu padat dan memungkinkan benih dapat tumbuh dan berkecambah. Karakteristik benih sintetik yang dihasilkan yaitu tekstur benih sintetik padat namun tidak terlalu keras, masih rentan rusak apabila tidak hati-hati ketika memindahkan.. Benih sintetik berwarna hijau kekuningan dengan diameter 5,5-5,7 mm dan berat basah 260-290 mg.

BackgroundCatechin is one of the secondary metabolites in Camellia sinensis L. that is alternatively produced through in vitro cultures. The in vitro culture product is possibly improved by optimizing the culture medium with the addition of growth regulators and precursors. The purpose of this study was to confirm the success of the secondary catechin metabolite production through the in vitro culture of C. sinensis L in a relatively short time.MethodsThe secondary catechin metabolite product is obtained in about 40 days. The study was conducted by (1) leaf cutting for inoculation in Murashige and Skoog media with 1 μg/mL of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid growth regulator; (2) the inoculation of callus multiplication on the same medium as a partially modified inoculation media condition with the addition of 1 μg/mL of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 2 μg/mL of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid at concentration; (3) callus multiplication developed on a new medium containing phenylalanine precursors (300 μg/mL); (4) testing growth by harvesting the callus and weighing the wet weight of its biomass and (5) identification of the callus qualitatively and quantitatively by using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).ResultsThe level of secondary catechin metabolite produced was 2.54 μg/mL and 12.13 μg/mL in solid and suspension media, respectively.ConclusionsIt is concluded that the method is effective and efficient in producing catechin product from C. sinensis L.
