Vitamin A is a crucial micronutrient for pregnant women and their fetuses. In addition to being essential for morphological and functional development and for ocular integrity, vitamin A exerts systemic effects on several fetal organs and on the fetal skeleton. Vitamin A requirements during pregnancy are therefore greater. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) remains the leading cause of preventable blindness in the world. VAD in pregnant women is a public health issue in most developing countries. In contrast, in some developed countries, excessive vitamin A intake during pregnancy can be a concern since, when in excess, this micronutrient may exert teratogenic effects in the first 60 days following conception. Routine prenatal vitamin A supplementation for the prevention of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality is not recommended; however, in regions where VAD is a public health issue, vitamin A supplementation is recommended to prevent night blindness. Given the importance of this topic and the lack of a complete, up-to-date review on vitamin A and pregnancy, an extensive review of the literature was conducted to identify conflicting or incomplete data on the topic as well as any gaps in existing data.

RESUMO Os movimentos sociais ocorridos durante a década de 80 na busca por um Estado democrático aos serviços de saúde impulsionaram a modificação do modelo vigente de controle social da época que culminou com a criação do SUS a partir da Constituição Federativa de 1988. O objetivo deste texto é realizar uma análise deste modelo de participação popular e controle social no SUS, bem como favorecer reflexões aos atores envolvidos neste cenário, através de uma pesquisa narrativa baseada em publicações relevantes produzidas no Brasil nos últimos 11 anos. É insuficiente o controle social estar apenas na lei, é preciso que este aconteça na prática. Entretanto, a sociedade civil, ainda não ocupa de forma efetiva esses espaços de participação.PALAVRAS CHAVE: Participação popular; controle social; Sistema Único de Saúde. ABSTRACT The social movements that occurred during the 80s seeking for a democratic State to the health services stimulated the modification of the current model of social control of the time that led to the creation of SUS as of the 1988 Federal Constitution. Resumo Objetiva-se analisar a prevalência e os fatores associados às Doenças Crônicas não Transmissíveis (DCNT), em adultos residentes numa área urbana de pobreza situada em Recife, Nordeste do Brasil. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, com amostra de 631 adultos de 20 a 59 anos. Analisaram-se possíveis associações das DCNT com fatores demográficos, socioeconômicos, comportamentais e relativos à saúde, por meio de Regressão de Poisson, considerando-se como estatisticamente significantes aqueles com valor de p < 0,05. A prevalência de DCNT foi de 56,7%, sendo maior no sexo masculino (60,8%), entre os adultos com 50-59 anos (80,5%), de menor classe econômica (57,7%) e menor nível de instrução (62%). O problema também predominou entre aqueles com IMC ≥ 25Kg/m2 (34,2%) e que referiram estado de saúde ruim (76,4%). No modelo multivariado hierarquizado, as variáveis estatisticamente significantes foram: escolaridade, IMC, percepção da própria saúde, sexo e faixa etária. Observou-se, neste estudo, uma elevada prevalência de pelo menos uma DCNT, bem como, associação estatisticamente significante entre DCNT e as variáveis: escolaridade, IMC, percepção da própria saúde, sexo e faixa etária. Estes resultados sugerem a necessidade de se intensificar as ações de promoção à saúde, em comunidades carentes, com vistas ao seu melhor controle.

RESUMOObjetivo: O presente artigo visa ampliar o conhecimento sobre o pré-natal a partir da descrição dos aspectos históricos, conceituais e organizativos do pré-natal, com o intuito de integrar as informações coletadas nos estudos já publicados. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma revisão teórica da literatura realizada através de materiais disponíveis nos sites do Ministério da Saúde, livros e órgãos voltados à Saúde Materno Infantil, além de artigos das bases de dados da SciELO e Bireme. Resultados: Na primeira metade do século XX, constatou-se a consolidação do conhecimento e da prática obstétrica e neonatal, culminando com a redução significativa da mortalidade materno infantil, em particular nos países desenvolvidos. Atualmente, há políticas públicas prioritárias e recomendações padronização de condutas dos profissionais de saúde, no intuito de atender aos conceitos de humanização, através do maior vínculo afetivo e ações integradas nos diferentes níveis de atenção. Conclusão: O conceito de pré-natal hoje é mais ampliado, abrangendo desde os cuidados pré-concepcionais até o acompanhamento sistematizado da gestação, do parto e do puerpério. ABSTRACTObjective: This article aims to broaden the knowledge about prenatal care through the description of historical, conceptual and organizational aspects of prenatal care, in order to integrate the information collected in previous studies. Methodology: This is a theoretical review of the literature based on information available from the Ministry of Health websites, books and agencies focusing on maternal and child health, in addition to articles from the databases SciELO and BIREME. Results: In the first half of the twentieth century, there was a consolidation of knowledge and obstetric and neonatal practice, culminating in the significant reduction of maternal and infant mortality, especially in developed countries. Currently, priority public policies and standardization of practices for health professionals have been implemented, in order to meet the concept of humanization through greater bonding and integrated actions at different levels of care. Conclusion: The concept of prenatal is broader in the current days, ranging from pre-conceptional care to the systematic monitoring of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. Objectives: to present scientific recommendations for perinatal care in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: a narrative review was carried out between March and September in 2020 from BIREME, the Scientific Electronic Library Online and the Virtual Health Library databases, based on the descriptors: “Perinatal Care''; “Coronavirus”; “Coronavirus Infection''; “Obstetrics”and “Newborns”. The information was grouped into four categories, namely, prenatal care; labor and birthcare; care for puerperal women and the newborn. Results: 14 publications were found, 9 scientific articles and 5 technical standards pursuant to the Ministry of Health in Brazil. In the first category, generally, it is recom-mended that prenatal consultations should be continued, if necessary, by means of telemedi-cine; hospitalization of positive pregnant women in case symptoms are severe and consid-ering pregnant women’s clinical and emotional aspects. In the second, screening and testing on suspected cases, discouraging skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding in the first hour of life. In the third, change the arrangement of beds in shared accommodations and have early discharge. In the fourth category, it is also recommended late clamping of the umbilical cord and observe differences in laboratorial testing of asymptomatic neonates. Conclusions: scientific evidence based on studies with methodological designs and more robust analyzes are necessary to guide perinatal care in the context of the harm-free COVID-19 pandemic.
