Vitamin A and Pregnancy: A Narrative Review

Abstract: Vitamin A is a crucial micronutrient for pregnant women and their fetuses. In addition to being essential for morphological and functional development and for ocular integrity, vitamin A exerts systemic effects on several fetal organs and on the fetal skeleton. Vitamin A requirements during pregnancy are therefore greater. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) remains the leading cause of preventable blindness in the world. VAD in pregnant women is a public health issue in most developing countries. In contrast, in some … Show more

“…One is retinoic acid (RA), a metabolite of vitamin A that functions as a natural morphogen involved in the patterning of the 3 rd , 4 th , and 6 th pharyngeal arch arteries and 3 rd PP ( Figure 2) (Niederreither et al, 2003;Vermot et al, 2003;Cipollone et al, 2006;Voss et al, 2012). Vitamin A deficiency during pregnancy remains a public health issue in developing countries due to its impact on the developing fetus, particularly eye development (Bastos Maia et al, 2019). High levels of RA can act as a teratogen that causes overlapping 22q11.2del-like phenotypes.…”

“…Supplementation of vitamin B12, which low levels have been related to impaired neurodevelopment, could also be useful [49]. On the contrary, supplementation of Vitamin A is not recommended (except in countries where vitamin A deficiency is a public health issue), because, due to the decreased kidney function, there is the possibility of accumulation, which has been related to spontaneous abortion and birth defects [50].…”

“…Undernutrition in pregnancy promotes several changes in metabolic control and hormone levels, which are needed to adapt the energy demands to reduced supplies. It is easy to link a caloric deficit with reduced availability of precursor for hormones that are obtained in diet, such as retinoids and carotenoids [134,135]. However, these precursors may be stored in some amounts in the liver and fat depots.…”

“…However, there is not a recommendation to supplement nutrition with retinoid precursors in pregnancy apart from in known deficient populations. In some African countries, this deficit may be present in the 21-48% of all pregnant women [135]. On the other hand, some hormones are involved in the short-term availability of energy resources, and may eventually be relevant in the case of reduced food intake during pregnancy.…”
