Objective: To assess the reliability and validity of an FFQ to evaluate dietary patterns of Na consumption among low-income and low-literacy Brazilian hypertensive subjects. Design: The initial FFQ was submitted to content analysis with the pre-test administered to fifteen subjects. Reliability was evaluated according to the reproducibility criterion, with interviewer administration of the FFQ twice within a 15 d interval. Validity was assessed against a 24 h recall (132 subjects), a 3 d diet record (121 subjects) and a biomarker (24 h urinary Na; 121 subjects). To test the correlation with the biomarker, discretionary salt was added to the FFQ Na values. Setting: A large urban teaching hospital in south-eastern Brazil. Subjects: The study was based on 132 randomly selected subjects (eighty-three women and forty-nine men) aged 18 to 85 years. Results: Kappa coefficients ranged from 0?79 to 0?98, confirming the reproducibility of the FFQ. There was no correlation between urinary Na excretion, the FFQ and the 24 h recall for the general sample, although significant correlations had been observed when methods were summed up (24 h recall 1 discretionary salt 1 FFQ; 0?32, P 5 0?01). The addition of discretionary salt significantly improved the biomarker-based FFQ validity, with correlation coefficients varying from 0?19 (general sample) to 0?31 (female sub-sample). Conclusions:The developed FFQ demonstrated satisfactory evidence of validity and reliability and can be used as an important complementary tool for the evaluation of Na intake among Brazilian hypertensive subjects.

A B S T R A C T ObjectiveTo evaluate the frequency of malnutrition and food consumption of children with cerebral palsy according to the age at the beginning of speech and hearing rehabilitation treatment. MethodsTwo to eleven-year-old children diagnosed with cerebral palsy who had up to three months of speech-language and nutritional rehabilitation were included in two reference centers in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. measurement of the children were taken: weight, knee height, arm circumference and triceps skinfold. Weight, estimated height and body mass index were classified into Z-scores according to the World Health Organization curves. Brachial circumference, triceps skinfold and arm circumference were classified according to Frisancho. The 24-hour recall was used to calculate intake of calories, proteins, calcium, iron, vitamin A, and zinc using the NutriWin software. ResultsA total of 68 patients were evaluated. Children older than five had a higher frequency of malnutrition when weight (p=0.02) and arm circumference (p<0.001) were considered, although there was less triceps malnutrition (p=0.002). These also had lower calorie consumption per kg/day, protein/kg/day and calcium than the younger children. ConclusionThe greatest nutritional impairment after the age of five suggests that nutritional and speech therapy interventions could have a greater effect if they were performed before that age.Keywords: Cerebral palsy. OBJETIVO: Descrever a proporção de fatores de risco para doenças cardiovasculares, dando ênfase aos fatores nutricionais, em alunos da área de saúde de uma universidade pública do Recife. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados 250 estudantes por um questionário que abordou aspectos biossociais, dados sobre estilo de vida, história familiar para doenças cardiovasculares, variáveis antropométricas e consumo alimentar, avaliado pelo Recordatório de 24horas. RESULTADOS: Foi encontrada a seguinte freqüência para os fatores de risco analisados: tabagismo (2,8%), sedentarismo (41,7%), excesso de peso (35,5% e 5,3% nos sexos masculino e feminino, respectivamente p<0,01), história familiar de hipertensão (35,5%), diabetes (11,3%) e obesidade (20,2%), morte antes dos 50 anos por doenças cardiovasculares nos familiares diretos (14,8%). Com relação ao consumo alimentar, observou-se um elevado percentual de inadequação no consumo de energia e um baixo percentual de inadequação no consumo de proteínas e carboidratos. Quanto ao perfil lipídico da dieta, mais de 40,0% dos estudantes apresentaram consumo de colesterol acima do recomendado e, em 17,9% dos homens e 44,8% das mulheres foi evidenciado um elevado consumo de gordura saturada (p<0,01). O consumo de ácido linoléico, ácido graxo monoinsaturado e poliinsaturado mostrou-se insuficiente em mais de 95,0% dos indivíduos estudados. CONCLUSÃO: A alta proporção de fatores de risco cardiovasculares representa uma advertência, dada a juventude da população considerada, e mostra a necessidade de insistir em medidas educativas e de promoção de condutas preventivas.

Body satisfaction and associated factors among high school students ABstrActObjective: To analyze body satisfaction among students and its possible associations with nutritional status, sociodemographic factors, life style and health perception.Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled students aged 15 to 20 years of public schools from the city of Caruaru, Northeast Brazil. Anthropometric, socio-demographic, life style and health perception, sleep, stress and body image variables were evaluated. The body mass index for gender and age was used to diagnose underweight, and overweight according to Conde and Monteiro (2006). Binary logistic regression was applied with the occurrence of "dissatisfaction with thinness" and "dissatisfaction with excess weight" as outcomes.Results: 594 students (62% females) aged 17.5±1.6 years old were studied. A proportion of 38.7% (95%CI 34.8-42.7) were satisfied with their body weight, while 31.3% (95%CI 27.6-35.2) would like to increase it and 30.0% (95%CI 26.3-33.8) would like to reduce it. The students who were satisfied with their weight ate at least five servings of vegetables/day, three or more meals/day, and they had a positive perception of sleep. Males and individuals with low weight expressed the desire to increase their body weight, while females, students who have less than three meals/day, students with higher income, and those with overweight would like to reduce their weight. Among the males who would like to increase their body weight 13.5% had overweight and 18.8% of the females who desired to reduce their weight were underweight. Conclusions:Preventive measures that include the discussion about body culture and health damage risks are needed. Objective: To investigate the prevalence of overweight and its association with socioeconomic, biological, and maternal factors in children under 5 years of age in the semiarid region of the state of Alagoas.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with a representative sample. We evaluated child variables (excess weight, sex, birth weight, prematurity, duration of breastfeeding, and origin) and mother variables (excess weight, central obesity, income, education, and smoking during pregnancy). Excess weight in children was defined based on the weightfor-height ≥ 1 z score; in mothers, overweight and central obesity were identified by mass body index ≥ 30 kg/m 2 and waist circumference ≥ 80 cm, respectively. We conducted logistic regression, adopting overweight as an outcome, considering as significant p < 0.05. Results:The sample comprised 963 children, with a mean age of 27.7 months (SD ±17.3). The prevalence of overweight children was 28.5%, directly associated with central obesity in the mother (odds ratio = 1.46; 95%CI 1.07-1.98) and duration of non-exclusive breastfeeding for a period of less than 6 months (odds ratio = 1.82, 95%CI 1.31-2.51). Conclusions:This study showed a high prevalence of overweight children under 5 years of age associated with central obesity in the mother and non-exclusive breastfeeding for a period less than 6 months. ObjetivoO objetivo deste estudo foi o de avaliar o estado nutricional e a ingestão de energia e de nutrientes de uma população em hemodiálise no Hospital das Clínicas, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. MétodosDe um total de 47 pacientes em hemodiálise de manutenção, 37 indivíduos (18 homens e 19 mulheres, idade 50,4 ± 16,3 anos) foram selecionados. O índice de massa corporal foi utilizado para a classificação do estado nutricional e a dieta foi investigada por meio do método do diário alimentar de 4 dias. ResultadosOs resultados evidenciaram um predomínio de indivíduos eutróficos (62,2%) e igual prevalência de baixo peso e excesso de peso (18,9% de pacientes em cada caso). Com relação à dieta, os achados desta pesquisa revelaram um adequado consumo energético-protéico. De uma forma geral, a ingestão média diária de nutrientes foi considerada adequada, exceto pelo cálcio e pela vitamina A, que apresentaram <50,0% e <70,0% da ingestão diária recomendada, respectivamente.
