Plants are excellent sources of secondary metabolites that have been used for the treatment of human diseases. The plant Momordica cymbalaria contains different types of phytochemicals like phenols, steroids, flavonoids, alkaloids and tannins. The present investigation was carried out to determine the bioactive compounds present in the different plant parts of Momordica cymbalaria by Gas chromatography-Mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) technique. Chromatograms and bioactive compounds of in vivo leaf, root and in vitro leaf callus methanolic extracts of Momordica cymbalaria are derived by GC-MS technique. 37 compounds were found in leaf methanolic extracts, 20 compounds in vitro leaf callus methanolic extracts and 18 compounds in root methanolic extracts. Background Solanum khasianum is an important medicinal herb of the Solanaceae family. The present study was focused to determine the bioactive compounds in S. khasianum leaf and root extract by GC–MS analysis and their antibacterial activity by agar well diffusion method. Results Sixteen bioactive compounds were detected in leaf extract and thirty-two compounds in root methanolic extract by GC–MS. The major potent compounds identified in leaf and root extracts were heptadecane 9-hexyl (43.65%) and stigmasterol (23.18%). The root extract showed increased antibacterial activity than leaf extract. Conclusion These extracts possessed significant antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial isolates in dose-dependent manner. This study provides the phytoconstituents, antibacterial property and scientific evidence for the traditional claim and use of S. khasianum.

Solanum khasianum Clarke. (Solanaceae), an important medicinal plant used to treat several diseases. Leaf, root, fruit and bark extracts of S. khasianum and the green synthesized silver nanoparticles were assayed for its antibacterial activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria, using agar well diffusion method. Among all the solvent extracts tested, methanolic extracts were found to possess elevated activity. The optimal antibacterial activity is exhibited by silver nanoparticles against Pseudomonas flourescens with a maximal zone of inhibition (22mm). In the present study, the efficacy of green synthesized silver nanoparticles over the different plant extracts of S. khasianum against different bacterial strains was reported. This investigation discloses the potentiality of using silver nanoparticles as an antibacterial agent.
