The propagation of many passion fruit species (Passiflora spp.) is done by seeds or sexual method, although asexual propagation, such stem cuttings, grafting or tissue culture is also possible and very useful in many cases. In this work, it was presented information on scientific and technological advances in sexual and asexual propagation of passion fruit, considering the different propagation methods and their applications. New demands for research and development activities are also related, given the wide range of passion fruit species and its potential for food, ornamental and medicinal use.
-Passiflora edulis, the passion fruit native from Brazil, has several common names (such as sour passion fruit, yellow passion fruit, black passion fruit, and purple passion fruit), and presents a wide variability with the different rind colors of its fruits, which are very easy to notice. However, in 1932, Otto Degener suggested that the yellow passion fruit had its origin in Australia through breeding, calling it P. edulis forma flavicarpa, and that it could be distinguished by the color of the fruit, the deeper shade of purple of the corona, and the presence of glands on the sepals. These distinctions do not support themselves, for the glands are common to the species (although they may be absent), and the corona has a wide range of colors, regardless of the color of the fruit. A more critical ingredient is the fact that the external coloration of the fruit is a character of complex inheritance and is not dominant, thus displaying a number of intermediate colors, making it difficult to identify the extreme colors. For the correct scientific naming of agricultural plants, the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature must be used in conjunction with the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants, with the selections with significant agronomic characteristics recognized and named cultivars. In accordance with the international convention promoted by the UPOV, of which Brazil is a signatory, several colors (light yellow, yellow, orange yellow, pink red, red, red purple, green purple, purple, and dark purple) can be recognized in order to adequately characterize passion fruit cultivars within the species P. edulis. At taxonomic level, Passiflora edulis Sims must be used for any plant and color of sour passion fruits, in combination with a cultivar name for the selected materials. Index Terms: cultivar, nomenclature, Passiflora edulis, Passifloraceae, yellow passion fruit. In the course of fungal attack on the cyanogenic rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis Muell.-Arg.) HCN is liberated from infected tissue. The HCN interferes with plant host and fungal pathogen. It becomes inhibitory to active defense responses which are dependent on biosynthetic processes as far as a threshold concentration is transgressed. Many plants liberate HCN after mechanical or chemical injury to their cells (2) or in the course of fungal infection (20). The role of this cyanogenic process in plants has been widely discussed but still remains unclear. There is considerable evidence that HCN liberated during tissue destruction by grazing animals acts as a feeding deterrent (10), but the data on cyanogenesis are quite controversial in the case of fungal diseases. Fry's working group (4) provided excellent evidence that fungal pathogens of cyanogenic plants generally are highly tolerant to hydrocyanic acid. From these findings it was deduced that plant pathogenic fungi which lack a mechanism to cope with HCN are incapable ofinfecting cyanogenic plants. Therefore, cyanogenic compounds were generally regarded to be preformed resistance factors (8).In contrast to this conclusion, Ludtke and Hahn (18) reported that highly cyanogenic flax varieties are susceptible to Colletotrichum lini, the causal agent of flax anthracnose, whereas moderately cyanogenic varieties are resistant to the same isolates ofthe fungus. In addition, Lieberei (15) reported a distinct correlation between a high capacity for HCN liberation and the high susceptibility of rubber tree leaves to Microcyclus ulei, the causal agent of rubber tree leaf blight. M. ulei is tolerant to HCN, it even grows better in HCNcontaining atmosphere (17). Obviously in flax and the rubber plant, HCN is not a simple resistance factor which can be overcome by pathogens adapted to it (16,17); instead the HCN is impairing the defense response ofthese plants. Screening studies revealed that all strongly cyanogenic Hevea varieties were susceptible to all existing isolates ofM. ulei, whereas low cyanogenic plants respond in typical race-cultivar specific reaction patterns (11,15).
It was evaluated the effect of three levels of potassium fertilization on physical and chemical characteristics of fruits of nine genotypes of sour passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sins. var. flavicarpa Deg.). The design used was based on randomized blocks in factorial scheme 9 x 3, being nine genotypes of passion fruit and three levels of potassium fertilization (0, 640, 1280 kg of K 2 O ha -1 .year -1 ), summing to 27 treatments, with four replication. It was observed more influence of the potassium over physical characteristics of the sour passion fruit. The total yield was linear with application of potassium. There was a square effect in the doses of potassium over the fruit length, in the length/diameter ratio, in the peel thickness and in the mean number of seeds per fruit.
Reaction to diseases and yield of eleven cultivars of sour-passion fruit cultivated with no pesticidesAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the reaction to diseases and the yield of eleven sour-passion fruit cultivars during the first six months of harvesting in the Federal District, Brazil. Weeds were controlled using a polyethylene black cloth (mulching) with 1.20 m large on the tape of dripping irrigation along the planting line. The hybrid EC-RFM (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa x P. edulis) had the best yield and it was less susceptible to woodiness virus (PWV), fruit-anthracnose and septoriose. All cultivars were susceptible to fruit-scab and bacterial spot. All cultivars evaluated presented low genetic variability to disease resistance.Index terms: Passiflora edulis, bacterioses, viroses, anthracnosis, genotypes, diseases resistance.O maracujá-azedo (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) cultivado no Distrito Federal vem sendo atacado por várias doenças que depreciam a qualidade do fruto, reduzem a produtividade e a longevidade da cultura.
PHYSICOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS, POLYPHENOLS AND YELLOW FLAVONOIDS IN FRUITS OF COMMERCIAL AND WILD PITAYA SPECIES FROM THE BRAZILIAN SAVANNASABSTRACT -Although the high commercial potential of pitaya, there are yet few studies of physicochemical characterization of pitaya fruits, especially considering wild species from the Brazilian Savannas. This study was conducted with the objective to analyze the physico-chemical characterization, total polyphenols and yellow flavonoids of fruits of Hylocereus costaricensis, Hylocereus undatus, Selenicereus setaceus and Selenicereus megalanthus pitaya species. For the physico-chemical analyzes the percentage of soluble solids, pH value and total acidity. For the phenolic compounds quantification, total flavonoids and yellow polyphenols extractable were analyzed. Significant differences of chemical characteristics and the amount concentration of phenolic compounds were observed among pitaya species and basal, middle and apical portions of fruit. The species S. megalanthus had higher amounts of soluble solids. This characteristic is more pronounced in the middle part of the fruit of all species. There was significant difference of pH, with values ranging from 4.84 to 5.67. The pitaya fruits are classified as low acid fruits. The acid content ranged from 0.10% to 0.15% of citric acid. H. costaricensis presented higher amount of total polyphenols and yellow flavonoids, differing significantly from the other species.
