Purpose-The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors affecting cooperatives performance by focussing on the roles of its intangible assets which are in the form of intellectual capital and members' participation. Design/methodology/approach-Questionnaires have been distributed among cooperatives board of members of the 100 best cooperatives in Malaysia. This study used Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis to examine the impact of intellectual capital and members' participation on the cooperatives performance and determine the most influencing factors that affect the performance. Findings-Results showed that there is a positive relationship between structural capital, relational capital and members' participation with the cooperatives performance while human capital has been found to have a negative relationship. This is further supported by the findings based on the multiple regression analysis whereby all the independent variables were found to be significant expect for structural capital. Based on the findings, this study proposed a model for co-operatives' performance which is based on its intangible assets. Practical implications-Findings of this study would provide guidance for the cooperatives sector to improve its performance and indirectly help the government in realizing the nation economic goals. Originality/value-This study provided a better understanding on the performance of the cooperatives by focussing on the roles of its intangible assets. Apparently, there are very limited studies on intellectual capital which is based on cooperative framework and thereby this present study would fill in the gap. In addition, due to the objective of the cooperatives which differs from other types of organization, findings of this study might provide significant contribution on the study of intellectual capital.
This paper aims to make a comparative analysis of Malaysia's nation-building process and critically look at these programs; namely the Rukun Negara, Bangsa Malaysia and 1Malaysia by looking at three main angles; ideology, race and ethnicity as the nation-building components. Initial survey has found out that tolerant government compromise to integrate the multiracial Malaysian has contributed to the problems. Even though the recent trends show there is a tendency of Malaysian to be 'colour blind' due to some kind of democratization and freedom of information access, still however, it did not show any sign that racial politics will disappear for good. Its unique compositions that based on multiracial, multi-religious, multicultural and multilingual as well as geographically divided has been identified by many scholars as an obstacle to the construction of Bangsa Malaysia. Several efforts from Rukun Negara (national ideology), Bangsa Malaysia and the latest, 1Malaysia have been and are being made by the government in realizing the prospect but no avail. The question now, how the Malaysian-style of racial accommodation will survive, is the nation-building program have been sufficient enough to dispose racial sentiments among the multiracial Malaysian, and if it is not, what should be happening.
Organ donation among the world community today is not a new phenomenon. The noble act of organ donation by donors that at times, has no blood relations has enabled many patients with chronic diseases to earn a second chance in life. The same scenario also takes place in Malaysia in which awareness of organ donation to help parties in need is not new. Many citizen of Malaysia is aware that their contribution gives "new life" to the needy. This little "scarifies" indirectly shows that Malaysian people put a high value for the social development in their country. The Malays in Malaysia is the largest ethnic group, but unfortunately, the statistics show that the Malays are the least to sign up for organ donation. Thus, the objective of this study is to identify the causes that prevented them from doing so. This study was conducted by taking into account three factors; religion, awareness, as well as perception or views on organ donation willingness among the Malays. Of the three factors studied, only two significant factors contributed to the main question of why the Malays shy away from organ donation and they are religion and perception. This shows that the Malays are aware that organ donation is a noble practice, but limited perception and knowledge of religion limit their participation. Therefore, it is recommended that a comprehensive discussion among religious leaders in changing the perception and explain the laws of religion on the issue of organ donation is carried out continuously in various mediums so that the awareness of the Malays in organ donation can be fully utilized for the benefit of everyone.
Entrepreneurship acts as a panacea for improving country growth and is prevalent in reducing the unemployment rate. A plethora of studies have focused on the main determinants that affect people’s intention to become an entrepreneur. The entrepreneurship intention research is mainly focused on the influence of the external environment and the individual personality aspects are not sufficiently considered. This study examines the mediating effect of locus of control in the relationship between subjective norm and youth entrepreneurship intention. This study is based on a cross‐sectional online survey design. The sample includes 248 Malaysian youth. The variables are measured based on the adapted scales and IBM SPSS 27 was used for the statistical analysis. Data were analysed using regression analysis to assess the possible mediating effect of locus of control. The present study provides evidence that locus of control partially mediates the relationship between subjective norm and entrepreneurship intention. Thus, this study concluded how entrepreneurs differ from the rest of the population in terms of locus of control. This study contributes to entrepreneurship literature by revealing that individuals with a high internal locus of control are more likely to become entrepreneurs.
