Chiral metal-organic framework coated open tubular columns are used in the high-resolution gas chromatographic separation of chiral compounds. The columns have excellent selectivity and also possess good recognition ability toward a wide range of organic compounds such as alkanes, alcohols, and isomers.
In adults undergoing hip fracture surgery, regional anesthesia may reduce postoperative delirium, but there is uncertainty about its effectiveness.OBJECTIVE To investigate, in older adults undergoing surgical repair for hip fracture, the effects of regional anesthesia on the incidence of postoperative delirium compared with general anesthesia. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTSA randomized, allocation-concealed, open-label, multicenter clinical trial of 950 patients, aged 65 years and older, with or without preexisting dementia, and a fragility hip fracture requiring surgical repair from 9 university teaching hospitals in Southeastern China. Participants were enrolled between October 2014 and September 2018; 30-day follow-up ended November 2018.INTERVENTIONS Patients were randomized to receive either regional anesthesia (spinal, epidural, or both techniques combined with no sedation; n = 476) or general anesthesia (intravenous, inhalational, or combined anesthetic agents; n = 474).MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Primary outcome was incidence of delirium during the first 7 postoperative days. Secondary outcomes analyzed in this article include delirium severity, duration, and subtype; postoperative pain score; length of hospitalization; 30-day all-cause mortality; and complications. RESULTS Among 950 randomized patients (mean age, 76.5 years; 247 [26.8%] male), 941 were evaluable for the primary outcome (6 canceled surgery and 3 withdrew consent). Postoperative delirium occurred in 29 (6.2%) in the regional anesthesia group vs 24 (5.1%) in the general anesthesia group (unadjusted risk difference [RD], 1.1%; 95% CI, -1.7% to 3.8%; P = .48; unadjusted relative risk [RR], 1.2 [95% CI, 0.7 to 2.0]; P = .57]). Mean severity score of delirium was 23.0 vs 24.1, respectively (unadjusted difference, -1.1; 95% CI, -4.6 to 3.1). A single delirium episode occurred in 16 (3.4%) vs 10 (2.1%) (unadjusted RD, 1.1%; 95% CI, -1.7% to 3.9%; RR, 1.6 [95% CI, 0.7 to 3.5]). Hypoactive subtype in 11 (37.9%) vs 5 (20.8%) (RD, 11.5; 95% CI, -11.0% to 35.7%; RR, 2.2 [95% CI, 0.8 to 6.3]). Median worst pain score was 0 (IQR, 0 to 20) vs 0 (IQR, 0 to 10) (difference 0; 95% CI, 0 to 0). Median length of hospitalization was 7 days (IQR, 5 to 10) vs 7 days (IQR, 6 to 10) (difference 0; 95% CI, 0 to 0). Death occurred in 8 (1.7%) vs 4 (0.9%) (unadjusted RD, -0.8%; 95% CI, -2.2% to 0.7%; RR, 2.0 [95% CI, 0.6 to 6.5]). Adverse events were reported in 106 episodes in the regional anesthesia group and 102 in the general anesthesia group; the most frequently reported adverse events were nausea and vomiting (47 [44.3%] vs 34 [33.3%]) and postoperative hypotension (13 [12.3%] vs 10 [9.8%]). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCEIn patients aged 65 years and older undergoing hip fracture surgery, regional anesthesia without sedation did not significantly reduce the incidence of postoperative delirium compared with general anesthesia.
Porous organic molecular cages as a new type of porous materials have attracted a tremendous attention for their potential applications in recent years. Here we report the use of a homochiral porous organic cage (POC) (CC3-R) diluted with a polysiloxane (OV-1701) as a stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatography (GC) with excellent enantioselectivity. A large number of optical isomers have been resolved without derivatization, including chiral alcohols, diols, amines, alcohol amines, esters, ketones, ethers, halohydrocarbons, organic acids, amino acid methyl esters, and sulfoxides. Compared with commercial β-DEX 120 and Chirasil-L-Val columns, the CC3-R coated capillary column offered more preeminent enantioselectivity. In addition, CC3-R also exhibits good selectivity for the separation of isomers, linear alkanes, alcohols, and aromatic hydrocarbons. The excellent resolution ability, repeatability, and thermal stability make CC3-R a promising candidate as a novel stationary phase for GC. The study described herein first proves useful commercially. This work also indicates that porous organic molecular materials will become more attractive in separation science.
High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) over chiral stationary phases (CSPs) represent the most popular and highly applicable technology in the field of chiral separation, but there are currently no CSPs that can be used for both liquid and gas chromatography simultaneously. We demonstrate here that two olefin-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) featuring chiral crown ether groups can be general CSPs for extensive separation not only in GC but also in normal-phase and reversed-phase HPLC. Both COFs have the same 2D layered porous structure but channels of different sizes and display high stability under different chemical environments including water, organic solvents, acids, and bases. Chiral crown ethers are periodically aligned within the COF channels, allowing for enantioselective recognition of guest molecules through intermolecular interactions. The COF-packed HPLC and GC columns show excellent complementarity and each affords high resolution, selectivity, and durability for the separation of a wide range of racemic compounds, including amino acids, esters, lactones, amides, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and drugs. The resolution performances are comparable to and the versatility is superior to those of the most widely used commercial chiral columns, showing promises for practical applications. This work thus advances COFs with high stability as potential universal CSPs for chromatography that are otherwise hard or impossible to produce.
Some racemates including alcohol, ketone, flavone, phenol, base, and amide racemates etc. were successfully separated by using a 3D chiral nanoporous metal-organic framework (MOF) as a new chiral stationary phase in HPLC. The experimental results show that the chiral MOF possesses excellent recognition ability for various racemates, and indicate that enantioseparation on the chiral MOF column is practicable.
Chromatography techniques based on chiral stationary phases are widely used for the separation of enantiomers. In particular, gas chromatography has developed rapidly in recent years due to its merits such as fast analysis speed, lower consumption of stationary phases and analytes, higher column efficiency, making it a better choice for chiral separation in diverse industries. This article summarizes recent progress of novel chiral stationary phases based on cyclofructan derivatives and chiral porous materials including chiral metal-organic frameworks, chiral porous organic frameworks, chiral inorganic mesoporous materials, and chiral porous organic cages in gas chromatography, covering original research papers published since 2010. The chiral recognition properties and mechanisms of separation toward enantiomers are also introduced.
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have high surface area, high adsorption ability, and nanoscale interactions. In this study, capillary columns including SWNTs, ionic liquid (IL), and IL + SWNTs for GC were prepared. The separation results showed that SWNTs possessed a wide selectivity toward alkanes, alcohols, aromatic compounds, and ketones, and a SWNT capillary column was a very useful GC column for the separation of gas samples. Coating the IL stationary phase on the SWNT capillary column, the SWNTs were able to improve chromatographic characteristic of ionic liquid. Comparing the IL coated on three graphite carbon black capillary columns, which were prepared by dynamic coating, static coating, and chemical bonding the Carbopack C with on SWNTs capillary column, the capacity factors were much higher on the SWNT column. The SEM showed that SWNTs could be bonded to the inner surface of capillary tubing, and most of them were linked end-to-end to form a layer of network structure of skeletons resulting in a high surface area, which increased the interactions between stationary phase and analytes. This is the first single-wall carbon nanotubes bonded to the fused-silica capillary tubing. In the first approach, SWNTs assist ionic liquid with enhanced chromatographic characteristic in GC. This work indicates that SWNTs make it possible to extend the application range on the newly prepared chromatographic stationary phases for GC.
