-The biology of Spodoptera cosmioides (Walk.) was studied on three artificial diets with different protein sources (d1 = white bean, yeast extract, soybean flour, powder milk and wheat germ; d2 = 'carioca' bean and yeast extract; d3 = corn flour, wheat germ and yeast extract). The objective of this research was to determine the most suitable diet for mass rearing S. cosmioides in laboratory. The species is highly polyphagous, and for this reason we hypothesized that diets that are suitable for other Lepidoptera can allow its development and fulfill the minimum requirements of biological quality, quantity and economy. Although S. cosmioides has completed the biological cycle on the three diets, the d1 was the most suitable for its rearing and produced the fastest development, higher total survival and pupae weight, as well as higher net reproduction rate (Ro), intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m ) and finite rate of natural increase (λ). The number of instars varied from six to seven, predominating six in d1 and d3; in d2, half the population presented six instars and half seven. Females presented pupae duration significantly lower that the males in all diets, thus emerging earlier. Adult longevity was not affected by the diets, while total fecundity was higher in d1 and d2.
-The biology of Spodoptera cosmioides (Walk.) was studied under different temperatures and its thermal requirements were determined, aiming to aid the rearing of this insect in the laboratory. Embryonic and post-embryonic periods were evaluated at seven different temperatures (14, 18, 22, 25, 28, 30 and 32ºC) under environmental chamber conditions, with 14h photophase. The caterpillars were reared on an artificial diet containing white bean, soybean meal, yeast extract, wheat germ and powder milk as source of protein. The extent of the embryonic period decreased with the increase of temperature within the 14ºC to 25ºC temperature range, remaining constant between 28ºC and 32ºC. For the other phases (caterpillar, pre-pupa and pupa) an inverse relationship between temperature and duration was observed within the 14ºC to 30ºC temperature range, extending to 32°C for pupae. Duration of pupal phase for males was larger than for females resulting in asynchronous adult emergence. The temperature thresholds for the embryonic, larval, pre-pupal, pupal periods and total cycle were 9.34ºC, 11.65ºC, 9.65ºC, 11.08ºC and 11.23ºC, with thermal constants of 62,73 degree-days (DD), 254.61DD, 33.42DD, 177.55DD and 525.11DD, respectively. Evaluating the pupal phase alone, the threshold temperatures were 11.25ºC for males and 10.81ºC for females, with thermal constants of 188.26DD for males and 165.47DD for females. For total cycle, the threshold temperature and the thermal constant for males were 11.28ºC and 535.85DD, whereas for females the same variables had values of 11.15ºC and 513.17DD. So, the most adequate temperature for the development of S. cosmioides is within the range of 25ºC and 28ºC, where 9.6 to 11.7 generations of the insect can be annually obtained, in laboratory conditions.
Neotropical Entomology 34(6): 945-949 (2005) Development and Thermal Requirements of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) on Eggs of Bonagota cranaodes (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)ABSTRACT -The aim of this study was to evaluate the development of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley on eggs of Bonagota cranaodes (Meyrick) under different temperatures. B. cranaodes eggs were maintained under seven constant temperatures (14, 18, 20, 22, 25, 28 and 30ºC), 70 ± 10% R.H. and, 14 h L. Forty replicates with 20 parasitized eggs each were kept in glass tubes (8.5 x 2.5 cm) covered with a plastic film. The method of hyperbole was used to calculate the temperature threshold (Tb) and the thermal constant (K). The Tb obtained was 11.9ºC and to thermal constant was 153,4 DD. The most favorable temperature range was from 25ºC to 30ºC, at which the shortest egg-adult development period and the highest survivorship were observed.

BACKGROUND: Although Leptoglossus zonatus is considered a secondary pest of maize grown for grain, when grown for seed, this pest can cause significant economic damage. There are no records of management recommendations for this pest. The objectives of this work were to quantify losses caused by L. zonatus to different genotypes used for seed maize production and to estimate the acute toxicity of selected insecticides to L. zonatus using different application technologies. The ultimate goal was to calculate economic injury levels (EILs) and develop economic thresholds (ETs) for L. zonatus infesting seed maize.RESULTS: EILs and ETs varied, respectively, from 3 to 8 and from 2 to 6 adults per 1000 plants, depending on the genotype, insecticide and application technology. Effective control was obtained by using aerial or ground application of -cyhalothrin (10.6%) + thiametoxan (14.1%) or permethrin (38.4%) at the rates of 1.48 mL ha -1 and 27.10 mL ha -1 , respectively, or ground application of methomyl (21.5%) at the rate of 244.06 mL ha -1 . CONCLUSION: Maize grown for seed is susceptible to L. zonatus damage during reproductive stages, and the pest densities requiring management vary with genotype, insecticide, and application technology. These results contribute significantly to integrated pest management (IPM) for seed maize.
The genus Mastrevirus (family Geminiviridae) is composed of single-stranded DNA viruses that infect mono- and dicotyledonous plants and are transmitted by leafhoppers. In South America, there have been only two previous reports of mastreviruses, both identified in sweet potatoes (from Peru and Uruguay). As part of a general viral surveillance program, we used a vector-enabled metagenomics (VEM) approach and sampled leafhoppers (Dalbulus maidis) in Itumbiara (State of Goiás), Brazil. High-throughput sequencing of viral DNA purified from the leafhopper sample revealed mastrevirus-like contigs. Using a set of abutting primers, a 2746-nt circular genome was recovered. The circular genome has a typical mastrevirus genome organization and shares <63% pairwise identity with other mastrevirus isolates from around the world. Therefore, the new mastrevirus was tentatively named "maize striate mosaic virus". Seventeen maize leaf samples were collected in the same field as the leafhoppers, and ten samples were found to be positive for this mastrevirus. Furthermore, the ten genomes recovered from the maize samples share >99% pairwise identity with the one from the leafhopper. This is the first report of a maize-infecting mastrevirus in the Americas, the first identified in a non-vegetatively propagated mastrevirus host in South America, and the first mastrevirus to be identified in Brazil.
Biology, Selection and Evaluation of Strains of Trichogramma spp. for Control of Corn Earworm in Corn Seeds Abstract. The objective was to study the biology of Trichogramma spp. in eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) and Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), select and evaluate a strain of the parasitoid to control of H. zea in corn seed.
