The side-effects of six pesticides used on peaches in Brazil were tested on the hymenopteran egg parasitoid Trichogramma cacoeciae using four laboratory tests: (a) adult parasitoid exposure to fresh pesticide residue on glass plates (worse case); (b) direct spray of host eggs enclosing the parasitoid egg, larvae or pupae (less-exposed life stages); (c) exposure of adults to pesticide residues on plant leaves at different intervals after application (persistence); (d) Doseresponse pesticide exposures of adults on glass plates. Two dose rates were used: (1) The highest recommended field dosage (FD) and (2) the predicted initial environmental concentrations (PIEC). The results showed that the preparations greatly differed in their initial toxicity and persistence. The insecticide Valient Ò (methoxyphenozide) and the fungicide Venturol Ò (dodine) were considered harmless to T. cacoeciae adults as they fell into the class 1 category according to the guidelines of the International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) when parasitoids were directly exposed to chemical residues. The insecticide/acaricide Assist Ò (mineral oil) was slightly harmful at the rate of PIEC 0.4 (40% of FD) and moderately harmful at FD. Pesticides in the categories harmless and moderately harmful can be considered for use in integrated pest management (IPM). The fungicide/acaricide Kumulus DF Ò (sulphur) and the insecticides Dipterex Ò 500 (triclorfon) and Lebaycid Ò 500 (fenthion) were harmful at both concentrations. In the persistence test, Assist Ò was short lived and therefore may in special cases (i.e. reduced direct contact) be considered for use in IPM, but Kumulus Ò DF, Dipterex Ò 500 and Lebaycid Ò 500 constantly reduced parasitism between 77 and 100% and were rated as persistent (more than 30 days). The direct spray of parasitized host eggs at intervals after parasitism showed that Assist Ò and Kumulus Ò DF were harmless to the parasitoid egg, larvae and pupae within the host eggs. Dipterex Ò 500 was slightly harmful when sprayed one day after parasitism (parasitoid egg) and moderately harmful to the other two stages (larvae and pupae). Lebaycid Ò 500 was harmful to the parasitoid egg and larvae and moderately harmful to the pupae. The dose-response test showed that Kumulus Ò DF and Dipterex Ò 500 were toxic to T. cacoeciae. Kumulus Ò DF was harmful from 1 PIEC 0.4 to 0.125 PIEC 0.4 dosages and was slightly harmful with 0.0625 PIEC 0.4 dosage. Dipterex Ò 500 was harmful to T. cacoeciae in all the dosages tested.
Palavras-chave: canal São Gonçalo, Rio Piratini, herbicidas, inseticidas, qualidade da água Monitoring of pesticides in two water sources in southern Brazil ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to evaluate and to monitor the presence of pesticides in the waters of the São Gonçalo channel and the Piratini river located in the southern region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. During the rice growing season, water samples were collected five times, three samples from the river Piratini and four from the São Gonçalo canal. The methodology used for the analysis of residues of quinclorac, carbofuran and clomazone was the High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode Array Detection (HPLC-DAD) and for residues of the pesticides fipronil and betacyfluthrin, the Gas Chromatography with Electron Capture Detection (GC-ECD) was used. Results show that from sowing to harvesting the quantity of pesticide residues in water decreased. It was also observed that, at the lowest point (Laranjal), a greater number of analyses contaminated with residues was detected (11 samples with some type of pesticide). Insecticide carbofuran and herbicide quinclorac were pesticides that presented residues more frequently (16 and 15 times, respectively). Clomazone and fipronil were present in each of the 7 samples with residues and betacyfluthrin was not detected at any site.
-The biology of Spodoptera cosmioides (Walk.) was studied on three artificial diets with different protein sources (d1 = white bean, yeast extract, soybean flour, powder milk and wheat germ; d2 = 'carioca' bean and yeast extract; d3 = corn flour, wheat germ and yeast extract). The objective of this research was to determine the most suitable diet for mass rearing S. cosmioides in laboratory. The species is highly polyphagous, and for this reason we hypothesized that diets that are suitable for other Lepidoptera can allow its development and fulfill the minimum requirements of biological quality, quantity and economy. Although S. cosmioides has completed the biological cycle on the three diets, the d1 was the most suitable for its rearing and produced the fastest development, higher total survival and pupae weight, as well as higher net reproduction rate (Ro), intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m ) and finite rate of natural increase (λ). The number of instars varied from six to seven, predominating six in d1 and d3; in d2, half the population presented six instars and half seven. Females presented pupae duration significantly lower that the males in all diets, thus emerging earlier. Adult longevity was not affected by the diets, while total fecundity was higher in d1 and d2.
Side-effects of Pesticides Used in Integrated Production of Apples to Parasitoids of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley and Trichogramma atopovirilia Oatman & Platner (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)ABSTRACT -Parasitoids of genus Trichogramma represent an alternative to control tortricids in apple orchards; however, it is necessary to use selective pesticides for managing this crop. The side-effects of pesticides used in Integrated Production of Apples, were evaluated to parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum Riley and Trichogramma atopovirilia Oatman & Platner (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) under laboratory conditions, by following protocols of IOBC/WPRS. Bioassays were carried with: a) adults by exposing to fresh pesticides residues, applied on glass plates; b) immature stages, with applications of pesticides on eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), with the parasitoid in the egg-larvae, pre-pupae and pupae stages. The reduction in the parasitization (adults) and reduction on adults emergence (immatures), in relation the control were used to classified the pesticides in harmless (<30%), slightly harmful (30-79%), moderately harmful (80-99%) and harmful (>99%).Out of 60 pesticides tested in bioassays with adults of T. pretiosum, 60% were harmless, 10% slightly harmful, 16.67% moderately harmful and 13.33% harmful. In bioassays with immatures, out of 19 pesticides evaluated, 73.68% were harmless for all immatures stages and the others were slightly harmful in at least one stage. For T. atopovirilia, of the 40 pesticides evaluated with adults, 45% were harmless, 15% slightly harmful, 12.5% moderately harmful and 27.5% harmful; in bioassays with immatures of the 17 pesticides tested 58.82% were harmless for the three stages, while 41.18% were slightly harmful, moderately harmful and harmful. T. atopovirilia was more sensitive than T. pretiosum to evaluated pesticides in the tests with either adults or immatures.
Thermal requirements and estimate of the number of generations of biotypes "corn" and "rice" of Spodoptera frugiperdaAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the temperature on the biology of the biotypes "corn" and "rice" of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and to estimate the number of generations per year in laboratory and field. Caterpillars of four populations of S. frugiperda were collected in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, identified by electrophoresis as the biotypes "corn" and "rice" in isolated areas (spaced for more than 300 km), areas of corn and irrigated rice production, as well as in adjacent areas that produces corn and rice irrigated side by side. The most appropriate temperature for the development of the two biotypes was 25ºC. In laboratory, a number between 11.0 and 11.3 generations year -1 for the biotype "corn" can be obtained, originating from isolated and adjacent areas, respectively, and, for the biotype "rice", 12.1 and 12.2 generations year -1 when originating from isolated and adjacent areas, respectively. In the field, the occurrence of 8.3 and 6.1 generations year -1 for the biotype "corn" was estimated, respectively, in isolated and adjacent areas and 8.4 and 7.0 generations year -1 for the "rice" biotype, respectively, in isolated and adjacent areas. In adjacent areas, the "rice" biotype presents an extra generation per year in relation to the "corn" biotype.
