The interrelationship between phospholipase A2 activity (PLA (2)) and the development of pale, soft, exudative meat (PSE) in chicken was evaluated. Pectoralis major m. from female birds of 45 days of age after hatch was studied and determination of the enzyme activity was estimated by the formation of long‐chain fatty acids. The occurrence of PSE was evaluated by measuring pH, L* values, water holding capacity and sarcoplasmic Ca2+ concentration from both heat‐stressed and nonstressed birds. In addition, the occurrence of the syndrome was monitored with birds advancing in age. Our studies revealed that PLA(2) plays an important role towards the occurrence of PSE symptoms and its activity increased as the birds became older. The enzyme activity was detected from the beginning of our experiment at 36 days and increased up to 70 days after hatch. The overall average activity was 1.25 times more pronounced in PSE samples from heat‐treated birds when compared to control animals (P ≤ 0.05).
Aos 42 dias de idade o menor custo de produção foi obtido para o T8.Palavras-chave: eficiência alimentar, fibra, nutrição Sunflower Meal in Different Phases of Broiler DevelopmentABSTRACT -The aims of this work were to know the best age to feed poultry with sunflower meal (SM), to determine the best percentage of SM to feed animals in different ages and to evaluate economicall viability of SM as a feeding for poultry ration. In this experiment 480 three days old chicks were distributed in a randomized design. The treatments were: T1= 0% of SM inclusion on the rations at ages I1, I2 and I3; T2= 4% at ages I1, I2 and I3; T3= 8% at ages I1, I2 and I3, T4= 12% at ages I1, I2 and I3, T5=0% at age I1 and 4% at ages I2 and I3, T6=0% at age I1 and 8% at ages I2 and I3 ; T7= 0% at age I1 and 12% at ages I2 and I3, T8= 0% at ages I1, I2 and 4% at age I3, T9= 0% at ages I1, I2 and 8% at age I3; e T10= 0% at ages I1, I2 and 12% at age I3. Statistical analyses were carried out in factorial schemes 4x2, 7x2 and 10x2 to evaluate characteristic weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion rate at 3-21, 3-35 and 3-42 days, respectively. There were no treatments effects on weight gain and on feed intake in the birds age. At 3-35 days of age, treatments T1 and T7 provided respectively the best and the worst feed conversion rate. The lowest production cost was obtained when the animals were fed at treatment T8.
Palavras-chave: carcaça, desempenho, farelo de girassol, girassol, suínos Sunflower Meal to Swine on Growing and Finishing Phase: Digestibility, Performance and Carcass Quality ABSTRACT -Two experiments were carried out to evaluate sunflower meal (SM) as swine feeding on growing and finishing phases. In experiment 1, eight barrows with 30.41kg liveweight were allocated in metabolic individual cages to evaluate the digestibility of sunflower meal. In experiment 2 a total of 48 pigs (24 barrows and 24 females), Large White x Landrace cross, were allotted to four treatments: diet without SM, diet with 7% of SM, diet with 14% of SM and diet with 21% of SM. The animals were evaluated from 25.82kg to 92.33kg liveweight. Daily weight gain (DWG), daily feed intake (DFI) and feed gain ratio (FGR) were evaluated during four periods (growing I, growing II, finishing and total period). All animals were slaughtered and submitted to an electronic carcass evaluation at the end of the experiment. The backfat depth (BP), muscle depth (MD), carcass weight (CW), lean meat percentage (LM), kilogram of lean meat (KLM) and carcass yield (CY) were evaluated. The digestible and metabolizable energy values of SM were 2171 and 2036 kcal/kg, respectively. There were no regression effect o...
Propolis is a honeybee product showing several biological properties that enhance the immune response, depending on the concentration and intake period. Because propolis possesses an immunomodulatory action on mammals, the objective of our study was to investigate the effects of propolis on the humoral immune response of laying hens by evaluating antibody production. Laying hens (ISA Brown) were divided into 5 groups with 7 birds each. Group 1 was a nonimmunized control, whereas birds in group 2 were immunized intravenously with SRBC, and those in groups 3, 4, and 5 were treated intraperitoneally with propolis (2, 10, and 50 mg/kg, respectively) on 3 consecutive days and then inoculated intravenously with SRBC. Hematological and serological analyses were carried out on d 0, 3, and 38. Natural and specific antibody levels were determined by hemagglutination with rabbit red blood cells and SRBC, respectively. Propolis-treated birds (50 mg/kg) showed a significant decline in heterophils and in the heterophil:lymphocyte ratio. After SRBC immunization, significant increases in levels of IgG were observed in groups 4 and 5. Furthermore, higher levels of natural antibodies were observed in propolis-treated laying hens. The administration of propolis to laying hens increased the production of IgG specific to SRBC and natural antibodies, and could be used to increase antigen-specific antibody responses to vaccines.
Palavras-chave: Biofilme de gelatina, óleo mineral, qualidade do ovo, tempo de armazenamento AbstractThis study aimed to evaluate the internal quality of eggs subjected to three different types of coatings: no coating (control); 3% gelatin and mineral oil. We used 180 white eggs, with an average weight of 62 g, from laying hens strain Shaver White. Those eggs were stored at a temperature of 25 ° C in a BOD during 35 days and were analyzed every seven days. We evaluated yolk, albumen, shell and weight loss percentage, Haugh units, specific gravity, yolk index, albumen and yolk pH and egg shell color. The results showed that storage time affects the quality of the eggs and the treatment coating the egg with mineral oil were provided the better internal quality of eggs, while the gelatin coating showed intermediate quality and without coating treatment, a poorer quality internal eggs, thus showing necessary to use some kind of coating to increase the shelf life of eggs.
The experiment was carried in four cycles of 28 days and the variables studied were: the performance (feed intake, egg production, egg weight, egg mass and feed conversion) and egg quality (egg specific gravity, yolk color, shell thickness and Haugh unity value). In the finish of experiment, five birds per treatment were abated for determination of the calcium and phosphorus in tibia. There was no interaction between DCGM and phytase on evaluated parameters. Inclusion of DCGM resulted in significantly higher feed intake and worst yolk pigmentation, than the 0% treatment. Increasing the phytase dose to 1000 FTU/kg improves yolk pigmentation. For the others variables no effect were observed for levels of DCGM or phytase. Based on the results from
Two trials were carried out to evaluate the effects of feeding of increasing defatted corn germ meal (DCGM) levels to broilers. In the first trial, for determination of nutritional value by method of total excreta collection, 120 19-day old broilers were allotted to a completely randomized design with three treatments and four replications of 10 birds each. The treatments consisted of corn and soybean meal-based diets with increasing DCGM levels: 0, 20, and 40%. Mean values of coefficients of metabolization of DM, CF, CP, EE, and metabolizable energy adjusted for nitrogen balance were (as-fed basis): 60.99%, 16.73%, 53.80%, 82.71%, and 2413 kcal/kg, respectively. In the performance trial, 480 4-day old chicks were assigned to a completely randomized design with five treatments and eight replications (four of each sex) of 12 birds. The treatments consisted of corn and soybean meal-based diets with increasing DCGM levels: 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20%. Linear increasing effect of DCGM on weight gain and feed intake and decreasing linear effect on feed:gain ratio were observed. Feeding DCGM is viable up to 20% level to broiler performance with no changes on carcass traits.
