-(Floral biology of Manilkara subsericea and Sideroxylon obtusifolium (Sapotaceae) in restinga). Manilkara subsericea (Mart.) Dubard and Sideroxylon obtusifolium (Roem. & Schult.) T.D. Penn. display infl orescences of a fasciculate type, with perfect, nectariferous, odoriferous and hercogamous fl owers. They present protogynic dichogamy and daylight anthesis. The corolla is gamopetalous, with the basal region of the lacinia forming a small tube. The medial lacinia, in both species, curves toward the fl ower axis, forming a type of groove, in which the stamen is lodged. The anthers are versatile, extrorse, and rimose. Pollen grain release is cloud-like, on account of an explosive mechanism upon activation of the lacinia-stamen device. The fl owers were visited by bees, butterfl ies, beetles, fl ies and Thysanoptera, being pollinated by Xylocopa ordinaria and Apis mellifera bees, by the Brachygastra lecheguana wasp and by the Isanthrene incendiaria butterfl y.Key words -explosive release of pollen, fl oral biology, Manilkara subsericea, Sapotaceae, Sideroxylon obtusifolium RESUMO -(Biologia fl oral de Manilkara subsericea e de Sideroxylon obtusifolium (Sapotaceae) em restinga). -(Reproductive phenology of four species of Sapotaceae at the Maricá, RJ sand bar). The purpose of this work was to record the occurrence of phenological events related to the flowering and fructification of Pouteria venosa (Mart.) Baheni, P. psammophila (Mart.)
Palavras-chave: restinga, biologia floral, pilhadores de néctar, sistema de reprodução, fenologia, melitofilia ABSTRACT -(Floral and pollination biology of Arrabidaea conjugata (Vell.) Mart. (Bignoniaceae)). This work deals with the floral biology, the foraging activities of floral visitors (pollinators and robbers), phenology and reproductive system of Arrabidaea conjugata (Vell.) Mart. (Bignoniaceae) in the "restinga" of Maricá, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 1997 to 2000. The flowers display daytime anthesis and last only one day. These attractive pink flowers are tubular, hermaphroditic, odoriferous and produce nectar as the floral reward. The nectar is secreted by a nectariferous disk concealed within a chamber. The pollen grains are gradually released throughout anthesis, extending the pollen presentation phase. The bees Euglossa cordata Linnaeus, Centris analis Fabricius and C. tarsata Smith are the pollinator species. Primary and secondary nectar pilferage by several bees, butterflies and a hummingbird is found in A. conjugata. The species is selfincompatible and has low fruit set (Fruit/Flower = 12.2%). Flowering of A. conjugata lasts from December to March (hot, rainy season) with a peak in January. The seeds are anemocoric and dispersal peaks in the cold, dry season.
Many Velloziaceae flowers present conspicuous glands, whose taxonomic value has already been highlighted. However, until now, their micromorphology, anatomy and ultrastructure have not been investigated, nor have the natures and possible functions of their exudates. Our aim was to investigate distribution, ontogenesis, structure, and secretion mechanisms of glands of Barbacenia flava and Vellozia intermedia and to discuss their possible ecological functions. Samples were prepared according to standard methods for investigations of plant anatomy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Histochemical tests were performed, and focal field observations were made in the study site. The capitate stalked glands on the pedicel, tepals and hypanthium are covered by a sticky secretion that is released in the gland head through the outer periclinal cell walls and cuticle. Secretions are produced in the epidermal and subepidermal cells that contain structural components typical of mixed, mainly lipophilic secretions. Bacteria were found inside the oil-resin gland cells of both species. The Meliponina bees Trigona spinipes and Tetragonisca angustula were observed collecting resin from both species, but were not involved in pollination. Our observations clearly indicate that flower glands of B. flava and V. intermedia are oil-resin secreting and remain active in secretion from very young buds, through to immature fruit. New, smaller glands replace senescent glands by divisions near the base of the original stalk cells. Oil-resin glands have a number of different, but important functions, including the interaction with Meliponina bees, protection against water loss and high temperatures by ultraviolet screening, and anti-desiccant properties.
