Extrafloral nectaries are nectar-secreting structures that are especially common among the woody flora of the Brazilian cerrado, a savanna-like vegetation. In this study, we provide morphological and anatomical descriptions of extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) occurring on vegetative and reproductive organs of several plant species from the cerrado, and discuss their function and ecological relevance. We describe the morphology and anatomy of EFNs of 40 species belonging to 15 woody families using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. We categorise EFNs following a structural-topographical classification, and characterise the vascularised and complex nectaries, amorphous nectaries and secretory trichomes. Fabaceae, Bignoniaceae, Malpighiaceae and Vochysiaceae were the plant families with the majority of species having EFNs. Ten species possess more than one morphotype of gland structure. Observations and experimental field studies in the cerrado support the anti-herbivore role of EFN-gathering ants in this habitat. Additional morphological studies of EFNs-bearing plants, including other growth forms (e.g. herbs and lianas), are being undertaken and will hopefully cast further light on the ecological relevance of these glands in the cerrado, especially with respect to their attractiveness to multiple visitors.
Palavras-chave: cerrado, nectário, secreção, ultra-estrutura ABSTRACT -(Ontogenesis, anatomy, and ultrastructure of Hymenaea stigonocarpa Mart. ex Hayne (Fabaceae -Caesalpinioideae) extrafloral nectaries). Hymenaea stigonocarpa Mart. ex Hayne, known as "jatobá-do-cerrado" has extrafloral nectaries (EFNs), which are reported for the first time in Hymenaea genus. In this research the origin, distribution, structure, and ultrastructure of the EFNs were studied. Samples of leaflets at different developmental stages were collected, fixed and processed by standard methods for analyses at light and electronic microscopes; histochemical tests were employed to determine the nature of secretion products. EFNs are distributed all over leaf blade, more concentrated on the basal and medial thirds of each leaflet. These nectaries are embedded in the mesophyll, show secretory tissue surrounded by an endodermis, and are vascularized by xylem and phloem. EFN secretory activity was exclusively observed in young leaves. The protoderm origins the EFN secretory tissue, the ground meristem originates the endodermis and the procambium originates the vascular tissues. Secretory cells of functional EFNs showed dense cytoplasm, large nucleus, mitochondria, plastids with a poorly developed membrane system, oil drops scattered in the cytosol, dictyosome, and smooth endoplasmic reticulum segments. Secretion was released by cuticle rupture and contains polysaccharides and...
The cambial activity and periodicity of secondary xylem and phloem formation have been less studied in tropical tree species than in temperate ones. This paper describes the relationship between seasonal cambial activity, xylem and phloem development, and phenology in Schizolobium parahyba, a fast growing semideciduous seasonal forest tree from southeastern Brazil. From 2002 to 2003, wood samples were collected periodically and phenology and climate were recorded monthly in the same period. S. parahyba forms annual growth increments in wood, delimited by narrow initial parenchyma bands. The reduction of the cambial activity to a minimum correlates to the dry season and leaf fall. The higher cambial activity correlates to the wet season and the presence of mature leaves. In phloem, a larger conductive region was observed in the wet season, when the trees were in full foliage. The secondary phloem did not exhibit any incremental zone marker; however, we found that the axial parenchyma tends to form irregular bands.
The continuous presence and activity of peltate trichomes on the ovary of Z. montana from early budding through to flowering and fruiting set, and its main chemical components, alkaloids and terpenes, suggest that they serve a protective function and are not related to the floral nectar source or to improving nectar quality.
Starch hydrolysis contributes to nectar formation, in addition to the photosynthates derived directly from the phloem. In these nectaries, the secretion is an energy-requiring process. During the secretion stage, some plastids show starch grain hydrolysis and membrane rupture, and it was observed that the region previously occupied by this organelle continued to be reasonably well defined, and gave rise to new vacuoles. The extrastomatic bodies appear to be related to the resorption of uncollected nectar.
Palavras-chave: capim-amargoso, anatomia, glyphosate, amido.ABSTRACT -The anatomy of the leaf, stem and rhizome of Digitaria insularis was studied, evaluating characteristics that could be related to its tolerance to glyphosate. Seeds and rhizomes of adult plants were collected in the field, area of no-till system, where the herbicide glyphosate had been repeatedly used for several years. The plants derived from these seeds and rhizomes were cultivated in 0.003 m 3 vases, containing soil, under a greenhouse conditions. When the plants reached the preflowering stage, three totally expanded leaves were collected per plant, between the third and fifth nodes. Fragments of the internodes covered by the sheaths of the sampled leaves were collected together with the rhizomes. The samples were fixed in FAA 50 and embedded in ethanol to obtain histological sections and mount the slider, according to the methodology. Leaf samples were diaphanized, following the usual methodology, to obtain the stomatal index and stomatal density at the epidermal surfaces. Plants derived from rhizomes had higher stomatal index and larger number of stomata per mm 2 , thicker adaxial and abaxial epidermis faces and thicker leaf lamina. The intense coloration in the rhizomes treated with lugol indicated the presence of a great amount of starch, regardless of the origin of the material.
