Were used 150 Dekalb White bird laying with 20 weeks of age was housed on conventional aviary with metallic cages with two subdivision of 50x45x40 cm² and distribution on three treatments: 8 bird laying by cage (562,5 cm²/bird); 10 bird laying by cage (450 cm²/bird) and 12 bird laying by cage (375 cm²/bird), with five repetition each. Were evaluated physiologic parameters (respiratory frequency, cloacal temperature and superficial temperature) and ambience (environmental temperature and relative humidity) during three circles of 28 days. Was adopted a randomized design with factorial arrangement 3x3 (three housing density and three periods). The results demonstrate that the housing density not impaired the respiratory frequency and superficial temperature, however the cloacal temperature differed significantly, being higher at four p.m. nilsa
International trade in broiler' feet, mainly to Asian markets, has demanded better quality control. The objective of this research was to study the suitability of using chicken footpad surface temperature to determine early lesions of pododermatitis. The project was conducted in two houses A1 and A2) in a commercial farm during one production flock. A1 had reused litter of wood shavings and rice hulls, and A2 had a new litter of sawdust. Both houses had positive pressure ventilation. The inner area of the poultry was virtually divided into three quadrants. The footpads were checked for the feet quality, and a degree of pododermatitis was awarded. Thermal images were made to test the surface temperature of the foot and identify inflammation in a total of 30 birds per house, at ages 5, 19, 29, 28 and 40 days of grow-out. Conditions of the rearing environment as well as the surface temperature of the litter, litter moisture, and degree of compression, were recorded. The environment within the houses did not differ. The surface temperatures of the footpad did not differ between the groups. The minimum footpad surface temperatures within the scores were similar, except for the score 3, which did not occur in A1. There was a prevalence of severe injury in the house with a new litter. KEYWORDS: rearing ambient, sub-clinical lesions, thermal image USO DA TERMOGRAFIA INFRAVERMELHO NA IDENTIFICAÇÃO DE PODODERMATITE EM FRANGO DE CORTERESUMO: O comércio internacional de pés de frangos, sobretudo para os mercados asiáticos, demanda maior controle de qualidade.
Pain is considered a condition that most affect the welfare of animals and its measurement is seen as a difficult task. This research aimed to determine the level of pain in pigs by their vocalization. It was recorded the vocalizations of 20 male piglets under normal circumstances (I), marking by Australian method (II), tail trimming management (III), and castration (IV). A unidirectional microphone and a digital recorder were used to record the sound signals. The results suggested that Pitch frequency (Hz), the maximum amplitude (Pa), and intensity (dB) increased from pain-free pigs to the marking procedure; and from marking to both tail trimming and castration The tail trimming and castration vocal response did not differ.
The most common lesions observed in commercial broiler farms are hock burns and pododermatitis, defined as necrotic lesions on the plantar surface of the footpads and in the hock of growing broilers, causing pain and compromising broiler welfare. The present study aimed at identifying the risks of hock burns and pododermatitis in broilers reared under commercial conditions on new or reused litter. Twenty-four 40-d-old broilers reared in two houses in a commercial broiler farm. The plantar surface of the footpads and the hocks of broiler were recorded using infrared thermal images. The incidence of hock burns in broilers reared on new litter was 0.72 times lower than those on reused litter. Broilers reared on new litter presented lower risk (0.75, RR<1) of presenting pododermatitis when compared to those reared on reused litter. When simulating the risk using a larger sample, the simulated risk of broilers presenting footpad and hock lesions when reared on new litter was 38% higher those reared on reused litter.
The present study observed whether environmental enrichment (music and strobe light) influenced farm-housed broiler chickens’ behavior. The trial was carried out on a commercial broiler farm from 21 to 35 days of growth. The sound stimulus consisted of playing a classical music track every day for an approximate length of 6 min, played five times a day for six weeks starting from the birds’ first day of age. The light stimuli came from a colored (red and green ground-projected dots) light-emitting diode (LED) strobe projector used after the musical stimulation. The broilers’ reaction was recorded (from day 21 through day 35), and individual bird behaviors were classified into welfare and stress. The birds’ ability to walk was measured using a gait score scale, and the degree of incidence of pododermatitis was verified. Environmental enrichment with light stimulus increased natural behavior in broiler chickens, such as eating, stretching, ground pecking, and flapping wings (p < 0.05). Broiler chickens tended to walk less in the housing with music stimuli (p < 0.05). In general, the environmental stimuli provided the birds with better walking ability but increased the incidence of pododermatitis (p < 0.01). We observed that the light stimulus left the birds more active; they foraged more and lay less when compared to the birds submitted to musical stimuli and the control. However, we also observed an increase in the frequency of stress-indicating behaviors in the environment under light stimulation. It is unclear whether broilers liked the tested stimuli of music and light in the scenarios studied. The enrichment with light or music apparently increased flock stress in 21- and 28-day-old broilers, with some benefit being observed only in 35-day-old broilers.
