Ocular conditions, anti-Leishmania antibodies and total protein of the aqueous humor were studied in dogs naturally infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi. Fifty dogs were analyzed and assigned into two groups of 25 animals each. All animals were submitted to routine ophthalmic exam. Results showed that 76% of the affected animals presented ocular signs, being uveitis the predominant. The mean of total protein in the aqueous humor of animals with uveitis was higher (P<0.05) when compared to the mean of animals with other ocular signs or no clinical sign. The anti-Leishmania chagasi antibody values in plasma were superior to those found in the aqueous humor (P<0.05).Keywords: dog, Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi, aqueous humor, antibodies, protein RESUMO Estudaram-se as condições oculares, os anticorpos anti-Leishmania e os valores de proteína total no humor aquoso de cães infectados naturalmente por

For this, three representative soil classes (Nitosol, Argisol and Espodosol) from forest zone of Pernambuco State were reproduced in 27 PVC columns of 20´110 cm (diameter ´ height), maintaining horizons, thickness and densities similar to original soils. Vinasse was applied to the soil at rates of 0 (control), 350 and 700 m 3 ha -1 , and the leaching was collected at 30 and 60 days. After that period, soil samples were collected in the depths of respectives horizons, and submitted to analysis and determinations of K, Ca, Mg, Na, pH and organic carbon. The results indicated that vinasse application promoted a pH and K concentration increase, reducing the amount of Na in the soils, except for the Spodosol, which did not show significant alterations in the studied parameters.
Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), also known as dry eye syndrome, is an ocular surface disorder in dogs characterized by decreased production of the aqueous part of the tear film (quantitative) or by evaporative tear disorders (qualitative). 1 In dogs, most cases of qualitative KCS are due to immune-mediated disease in which the inflammatory process results in atrophy of the lacrimal glands, substitution of glandular structures for fibrous
ABSTRACT Introduction:Considering the unknown situation regarding canine visceral leishmaniasis in Garanhuns, this study had the aim of investigating occurrences of anti-Leishmania spp antibodies in domesticated and partially domesticated dogs, and the possible risk factors involved. Methods: In the first phase of the study, 256 blood samples were collected from dogs and subjected to the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) reaction at a dilution of 1:40. Additionally, 23 IFAT-positive samples were tested using an immunochromatographic dipstick test. In the second phase, new blood samples were collected from 18 dogs that were IFAT-positive in the first phase. These animals were retested using IFAT (1:40 and 1:80) and, additionally, by means of the polymerase chain reaction to investigate the Leishmania infantum DNA. Furthermore, 16 of these samples were retested using the immunochromatographic dipstick test. Results: In the first phase of the study, 16% of the samples were IFAT-positive (1:40) and only three (13%) were positive in the immunochromatographic dipstick test. In the second phase, 12 samples were IFAT-positive at the dilution of 1:40, and seven were also positive at 1:80. None of the samples were positive in the polymerase chain reaction testing or in the immunochromatographic dipstick test. Clinical signs suggestive of visceral leishmaniasis were observed in 4.9% of the IFAT-positive dogs. There were no sta...
Os exames revelaram catarata cortical anterior, posterior e nuclear em 12 olhos (21,4%), catarata cortical anterior, posterior, nuclear e capsular posterior em 23 olhos (41%), catarata cortical anterior, posterior e capsular posterior em um olho (1,7%), catarata cortical anterior e nuclear Ultrasonography of the lens and posterior segment is an indispensable step in the preoperative evaluation of dogs with cataracts, since ophthalmoscopy is not feasible when there is opacification of the lens. This study evaluated the echographic conditions of cataractous lens and fundus of the eye in dogs affected by cataracts. The study was conducted in 30 dogs (56 eyes), 10 males and 20 females, with different types of cataracts at different stages of development. Echography in A and B modes, simultaneously, was carried out for the examination of the lens and posterior segment. The examinations revealed anterior cortical, posterior cortical and nuclear cataract in 12 eyes (21.4%), anterior cortical, posterior cortical, nuclear and posterior capsular in 23 eyes (41%), anterior cortical, posterior cortical and posterior capsular cataract in one eye (1.7%), anterior cortical and nuclear cataract in one eye (1.7%), anterior cortical, nuclear and posterior capsular cataract in five eyes (8.9%), and anterior cortical cataract in seven eyes (12.5%). Abnormal ultrasonographic alterations were observed in the posterior segment in 26 eyes evaluated (46.4%). Vitreal degeneration was detected in 12 eyes (21.4%), images of vitreal exudate or hemorrhage in seven eyes (12.5%), persistence of hyaloid artery in four eyes (7.1%) and lens subluxation in three eyes (5.3%). The results obtained reiterate the importance of ultrasonography in canine patients presented for cataract surgery given that alterations of the posterior segment are difficult to identify in a clinical examination when the lens is opacified. em um olho (1,7%), catarata cortical anterior, nuclear e capsular posterior em cinco olhos (8,9%) e catarata cortical anterior em sete olhos (12,5%).
