Ocular alterations in dogs naturally infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi

Abstract: Ocular conditions, anti-Leishmania antibodies and total protein of the aqueous humor were studied in dogs naturally infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi. Fifty dogs were analyzed and assigned into two groups of 25 animals each. All animals were submitted to routine ophthalmic exam. Results showed that 76% of the affected animals presented ocular signs, being uveitis the predominant. The mean of total protein in the aqueous humor of animals with uveitis was higher (P<0.05) when compared to the mean of an… Show more

“…These animals play a central role in the transmission cycle to humans by phlebotomine sand flies. As also observed in the Old World (Ciaramella et al, 1997), symptomatic cases of CVL due to L. chagasi, in America, presents clinically with anemia, emaciation, splenomegaly, local or generalized lymphadenopathy, cutaneous lesions, ocular lesions (Brito et al, 2006) weight loss, and cachexia. In the present study, dermatological entities previously described by Ferrer (1988), Ciaramella et al (1997) and Lima et al (2004) were observed.…”

“…Estes sinais, além da uveíte, quemose e glaucoma secundário, também foram observados em cães portadores de Leishmania chagasi (BRITO et al, 2006). Tais achados possivelmente estão relacionados a uma infecção secundária ocasionada pela imunossupressão ocorrida na leishmaniose (SCHAER;YOUNG, 1985).…”

“…Due to the diversity of clinical presentation; the disease may be difficult to diagnosis. Ocular alterations have been reported in some studies, as being common in dogs infected by Leishmania infantum and L. chagasi, such as uveitis and conjunctivitis (Peña et al, 2000;Brito et al, 2006). The ophthalmic form of this disease involving the cornea is less frequent, unless other ocular structures be involved (Roze, 2002).…”

“…Dogs affected by visceral leishmaniasis usually develop the systemic form of the disease showing a great range of clinical signs (Noli, 1999). Ocular manifestations have been described in canine leishmaniasis affecting over 50% of the infected animals (Brito et al, 2006). Canine calazar affects mostly the anterior segment of the eye (Puchol ad Gonzalez, 1989).…”
