SrTiO3 crystalline nanoparticles were prepared using the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method at 140 °C with synthesis times varying from 4 to 160 min. Sample characterization showed that the method is effective in obtaining nanoparticles in a relatively short time, which have the highest photoluminescence emission. The crystalline phase of perovskite-type SrTiO3 is not significantly influenced by synthesis time. However, the SrTiO3 phase is already obtained with a 4 min synthesis time. Also, all samples exhibited photoluminescence at room temperature in the blue-green region, where intensity decreased with increasing synthesis time and particle size. The samples synthesized with the shortest time showed higher photoluminescence emission and smaller particle sizes. The morphology obtained based on FE-SEM showed cubic nanoparticles with inhomogeneous grain growth at higher temperatures of synthesis in addition to the formation of new architectures.

Low-cost bricks were manufactured using construction and demolition waste (CDW). Lime and cement used as binding agents mixed with CDW and water. The bricks present better technological properties than standards. The use of this waste reduce the raw materials demands and environmental impacts.

Sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) is an industrial waste that contains silicon and aluminum oxides as the major components and iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium oxides as the main minor components. In this paper, SCBA from one Brazilian factory was characterized and tested for its influence on the ceramic properties of clay/ash ceramic probes. Prismatic probes were pressed (18 MPa) using a ceramic mass mixed with 0%, 5%, 8%, and 10% ash. The probes were fired at temperatures between 800° and 1200°C. X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray fluorescence, thermal analysis (differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermogravimetric analysis), and tests for texture (particle‐size analysis), flexural strength, and linear shrinkage were carried out to characterize the samples. The results showed that the amount of ash to be incorporated will depend on mainly the composition of clay but also ash, and indicated that the clay used in this work can incorporate up to 10% weight of ash to produce solid bricks. The results also showed an improvement in ceramic/ash properties up to sintering temperatures higher than 1000°C.

Substitution of Ba/Ca (0.25/0.75) in Ba1−xCaxTiO3 compounds causes defects which inhibit the growth of particles and promote higher photoluminescence emission.

RESUMO.-[Ultrassonografia em modo A e B na avaliação pré-operatória da lente e do segmento posterior de olhos de cães com catarata.] A ultrassonografia do segmento posterior do bulbo do olho é etapa indispensá-vel na avaliação de cães com catarata que serão submetidos à facectomia, uma vez que a oftalmoscopia não é factível quando há opacificação da lente, notadamente nas cataratas maduras. Este estudo avaliou as condições ecográficas da lente cataratogênica e do fundo de olho de cães cursando com catarata. Foram avaliados 30 cães (56 olhos), sendo 10 machos e 20 fêmeas, cursando com catarata em diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento. Realizou-se a ecografia em modo A e B simultaneamente. Os exames revelaram catarata cortical anterior, posterior e nuclear em 12 olhos (21,4%), catarata cortical anterior, posterior, nuclear e capsular posterior em 23 olhos (41%), catarata cortical anterior, posterior e capsular posterior em um olho (1,7%), catarata cortical anterior e nuclear Ultrasonography of the lens and posterior segment is an indispensable step in the preoperative evaluation of dogs with cataracts, since ophthalmoscopy is not feasible when there is opacification of the lens. Abnormal ultrasonographic alterations were observed in the posterior segment in 26 eyes evaluated (46.4%). Vitreal degeneration was detected in 12 eyes (21.4%), images of vitreal exudate or hemorrhage in seven eyes (12.5%), persistence of hyaloid artery in four eyes (7.1%) and lens subluxation in three eyes (5.3%). Some aluminosilicates, for example mullite and wollastonite, are very important in the ceramic and construction industries. The most significant glass-ceramic for building applications has wollastonite as the main crystal phase. In this work we report on the use of sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) to produce glass-ceramics with silicates as the major crystalline phases. The glasses (frits) were prepared by mixing ash, limestone (calcium and magnesium carbonates) and potassium carbonate as the fluxing agent. X-ray fluorescence was used to determine the chemical composition of the glasses and their crystallization was assessed by using thermal analysis (DTA/DSC/TGA) and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that glassceramic material can be produced with wollastonite as the major phase, at a temperature lower than 900 °C.
