This work aimed at evaluating the effects of the supplementation of starter diet with Arg on breast muscle development in broilers and the activation of satellite cells and the aggregation of myofibrillar protein. Male Cobb chicks (n = 990) were randomly assigned to 1 of 5 treatments in a complete random design. Measurements of 33 chicks per treatment were made in 6 repetitions. The treatments consisted of a basal diet with 1.390% digestible Arg (without supplementation) and 4 dietary levels of Arg (1.490, 1.590, 1.690, and 1.790%) with Arg:Lys ratios of 1.103, 1.183, 1.262, 1.341, and 1.421, respectively. Arginine supplementation was used only in the starter phase (1 to 21 d). Dietary supplementation with Arg had a positive effect (P < 0.05) on breast and breast fillet weight on d 7 and 21 and on myofiber diameter on d 14 and 21. However, no effect was observed (P > 0.05) on the protein:DNA ratio, which demonstrates that Arg does not interfere with the mitotic activity of the satellite cells. Independently from mechanism, Arg affected muscle growth in the starter phase positively. Dietary supplementation with Arg in the starter phase had no effect (P > 0.05) on the carcass yield of broilers on d 42. Diet supplementation with Arg at levels above the ones recommended for the starter phase may be necessary for improved muscle development in broilers.
Two trials were conducted to determine Na+ and Cl- nutritional requirements and dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) and its effects on acid-base balance, litter moisture, and incidence of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) in broiler chickens during the growing period. Cobb broilers were distributed in a completely randomized design (30 pens) with six treatments, five replicates, and 50 birds per experimental unit at 21 d of age. Treatments used in both trials were a basal diet with 0.10% Na+ (Trial 1) or Cl- (Trial 2) supplemented to result in diets with Na+ or Cl- levels of 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, and 0.35%. In the first trial, the results indicated an optimum Na+ requirement of 0.15%. The Na+ levels, obtained with supplemental NaHCO3, did not affect blood gas parameters and TD incidence. Litter moisture increased linearly with Na+ levels. In the second trial, the Cl- requirement was estimated at 0.23%. Increasing Cl- levels, provided by NaCl with NaHCO3 to balance Na+, caused a linear effect (P < or = 0.01) on blood gas parameters, with an estimated equilibrium at 0.19% dietary Cl-. No effect (P > or = 0.05) of Cl- levels on litter moisture was observed. The hypertrophic area of growth plate in the proximal tibiotarsus increased with Cl- levels (P < or = 0.001). A nonlinear model describes this response. The best dietary electrolyte balance (DEB) was between 250 to 261 mEq/kg in Trial 1 and 249 to 257 mEq/kg in Trial 2. We concluded that the Na+ requirement was 0.15%, and the Cl- requirement was 0.23% for maximum performance of growing chickens between 21 and 42 d of age, and the best DEB was between 249 and 261 mEq/kg.

There was not effect of the treatments on the main carcass characteristics. The average true yield of carcass was 51.5%, while the yield of commercial carcass was 42.4%. Differences were not observed between the variable body condition and conformation of the carcass, in function of the treatments. The variables fat covering, fat color and fat thickness were similar. The forms of the corn grains used in the feeding of the lambs did not affect the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the carcass.
Palavras-chave: matéria seca, matéria seca de folhas, meristemas apicais, perfilhamento, vigor da rebrota Evaluation of Production and Any Physiological Characteristics of Genotypes ofPanicum maximum Jacq. under two Cutting Heights ABSTRACT -The experiment was carried out from September 1995 to September 1996, to evaluate the total dry matter/ha (TDM), of leaves/ha (LDM), regrowth vigor (RV), tillers number (TN), and percentage of eliminated apical meristems (AME) in six grass cultivars (Aruana, Centenario, Colonião, Mombaça, Tanzania and Tobiatã) and two genotypes (K249 and KK8) of Panicum maximum Jacq., at two cutting heights (20 and 40 cm), during dry and rainy season. A split plot experimental design was used. The height cutting only influenced the yield of TDM and LDM of Tanzania grass that was higher in lower cuttings during rainy period. The Centenario and KK8 grasses presented higher AME at 20 cm height and Aruana at 40 cm, in both periods. The lowest RV was to Aruana grass in the two cutting heights in the two experimental periods. The Centenario, KK8, Mombaça, Tanzania e Tobiatã grasses presented higher TDM and LDM both two periods, in the two cutting heights. By the results, the grasses can be managed in any cutting height, except the Tanzania grass, which can be management with low height.
Palavras-chave: avaliação genética, classificação, correlação, herdabilidade, modelo animal Genotype x Environment Interaction in Growth Traits of Nellore Cattle of MatoGrosso do Sul ABSTRACT -The effect of genotype x environment interaction on body weight at birth (BW), weaning (W205), 12 (W365) and 18 (W550) months of age of Nellore cattle raised in the regions of Alto Taquari, Campo Grande and Pantanal, MS, Brazil, was studied. The data were analyzed for each region separately and for all regions together. Variance and covariance components and genetic parameters were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method, using an animal model that included the random additive direct effect, and the fixed effects of sex and contemporary group (herd, year, season and region of birth), and sires were ranked based on their breeding values (BV). The results showed that the additive direct and residual variances were different among regions. The heritability estimates ranged from 0.16 to 0.66 (BW), 0.36 to 0.59 (W205), 0.35 to 0.49 (W365) and 0.30 to 0.45 (W550), depending on the region. Pearson's correlation coefficients between BVs of sires, obtained for each pair of regions, showed means equal to 0.11 (BW), 0.38 (W205), 0.38 (W365) and 0.39 (W550). When the correlations were for the BVs obtained for each region with the BVs obtained for all regions together, the estimates were higher showing means equal to 0.80 (BW), 0.88 (W205), 0.88 (W365) and 0.87 (W550). Despite the high v...
-The present study determined the genetic variation at mrjps loci (mrjp3, mrjp5 and mrjp8) and evaluated the potential use of MRJPs as molecular markers for higher royal jelly production in Africanized honeybee colonies. The three analyzed loci produced a total of 17 alleles. This high allelic polymorphism indicated these loci could serve as genetic markers. The potential use of MRJPs as molecular markers for royal jelly production was evaluated by analyses of multiple linear regressions with EPD (expected progeny differences) values for royal jelly production. The variance analyses indicated that the mrjp3 repetitive region influenced the genetic value of queen's offspring for royal jelly production. The determination coefficient (R 2 ) for the significant alleles of the repetitive region of mrjp3 indicated that 36.85% of the EPD variation is explained by the variation of C, D and E alleles. Therefore, these three alleles present a considerable genetic effect on the variation of RJ production.Apis mellifera / MRJP-3 / genetic variability / polymorphism / EPD
Palavras-chave: consumo, conversão alimentar, custo de produção, ganho de peso, ovinos, proteína Performance of Lambs Fed with Different Protein LevelsABSTRACT -The experiment was carried out to evaluate increasing crude protein (CP) levels in drylot lambs diet, and its effects on animal performance. Thirty two tricross lambs (1/2 Texel + ¼ Bergamácia + ¼ Corriedale), being 16 males and 16 females, with average age 5 months and live weight 30 kg, were fed for 57 days, with isoenergetic diets (72% TDN), but with different protein levels (12, 16, 20 and 24% PB). The animals were identified, weighted and distributed in the four treatments. The lambs were kept underroof in individual pens with lathing and a suspended floor. The studied parameters were weight daily gain, dry matter intake, feed efficiency, and cost per kilogram of carcass. The use of diets with different protein levels in lamb termination, showed a positive linear effect for weight daily gain and negative feed efficiency. It was verified that the use of diets with increasing protein levels did not influence the dry matter intake of the lambs. It was concluded that the diets between 12 and 24% crude protein were economical for finishing lambs in drylot, however, the largest return were gotten with the ration contends 12% CP. There were no sex effects for the analyzed parameters.
