Forage quality is highly dependent of fermentation products, in case of silage, and the losses of soluble compounds and microorganisms activity in the case of hay. The theme "Methodological advances in evaluation of preserved forage quality" at the 44 th Annual Meeting of Brazilian Society of Animal Science has as main goals to highlight the more useful and particular methodological procedures for conserved forages and additional to the standard chemical analysis.. Analytical procedures for preserved forage should suffer a standardization to permit comparisons of results obtained by the world wide laboratories. This review brings to discussion the description and systematization of important physical and chemical methods to be implemented in preserved forage evaluation. The methodologicalprocedures available permit not only quantify, but also permit qualify the losses occurred during preservation process and across the aerobic exposition of the roughage source during feed out. It suggests that the adoption of any management strategies for conserved forages may depend on an evaluation accordingly fit to the losses observed in the overall process.
This manuscript brings an overview of the current challenges, advances and opportunities for silage production and utilization in tropical areas, with particular reference to Brazil and South America. Tropical crops have a high production potential during the rainy season; therefore, silage has a central role in feed preservation in the tropics. Use of silage all‐year round is expanding, since a significant number of dairy farmers are moving from grazing to housed systems, and the number of beef cattle finished in feedlots is increasing. Whole‐plant maize silage has been by far the main conserved forage in both dairy and beef operations, whereas the use of grain silages (maize and sorghum) is increasing. Recently, there has been great interest in snaplage (mainly comprised of maize kernels, cob and husk) due to the logistic benefits. Although pull‐type forage harvesters are still common in Brazilian dairies, the majority of beef feedlots use self‐propelled foragers by hiring custom services. Hence, the number of contractors with self‐propelled harvesters has significantly increased. The convenience of a secondary high‐quality forage in diets of dairy cows as well as the opportunity of including forage sources alternative to maize silage in rations for beef cattle warrants the resumption of research on tropical grass silages. Conservation of wet by‐products, environmental aspects of silage making and, especially, silage pathogenicity and food safety are also fields of research opportunity.
Characteristics of the Carcass of Lambs Fed Diets with Corn Grains Conserved in Different FormsABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of corn grains in different forms (corn dry grain, high moisture corn silage, moisturized corn silage) in the diet of confined lambs, and its possible effects on the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the carcass. Twenty male Bergamacia x Corriedade lambs were used. The animals were confined and fed ad libitum, assigned to five treatments consisted of dry corn: high moisture corn silage or moisturized corn silage (0:100, 50:50, 100:0). There was not effect of the treatments on the main carcass characteristics. The average true yield of carcass was 51.5%, while the yield of commercial carcass was 42.4%. Differences were not observed between the variable body condition and conformation of the carcass, in function of the treatments. The variables fat covering, fat color and fat thickness were similar. The forms of the corn grains used in the feeding of the lambs did not affect the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the carcass.
In the first experiment 12 male foals, 11 months old, with live weigth of 232.17±10.22 kg, were used in a digestibility trial to determine nutritional feeding value of high moisture corn silage. Two diets were used, a reference diet and one test diet, in which highmoisture corn silage replaced 25% of reference diet on dry matter basis. Total feces collection method was used for determination of apparent digestibility. The average values obtained for digestible dry matter, digestible protein, digestible fiber, digestible neutral detergent fiber, digestible acid detergent fiber, digestible starch and digestible energy, based on dry matter, were respectively, 86.66%, 4.94%, 0.83%, 3.56%, 1.28%, 70.63% and 3.667 kcal/kg. In the second experiment 16 male foals, 12 months old with live weight of 238.67±18.85 kg were used. In a completely randomized design with four replications and one animal for each experimental unit in a 90 days period. The trial consisted of a reference diet and three levels of replacement ...
-The objective of this experiment was to estimate the curve of dehydration, chemical composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and crude protein digestibility (IVCPD) of tifton 85 hay, produced single or overseeded with ryegrass or white oat IPR 126. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in a 3 × 10 factorial arrangement, with three cropping systems and ten evaluation times (0, 4, 8, 24, 28, 32, 48, 52 and 56 and 71 hours after harvest) during the dehydration process. For chemical composition and in vitro DM and CP digestibility, the experimental design was in randomized blocks with three cropping systems and three evaluation times (before cutting, before baling and 100 days after of storage). It was found that tifton 85 intercropped with white oat kept its higher nutritional value after storage, with 19.78% crude protein and 70.03% of in vitro dry matter digestibility. The participation of white oat in tifton 85 area was 57.04% and for ryegrass, it was 38.52%, but the dry matter yield of single tifton 85 was higher than other intercrops. Thus, it is recommended an oversowing of winter annual species on Tifton 85, without moisture restriction, because of the benefits obtained in the hay nutritional value.
The interest of ensiling total mixed rations (TMR) for ruminants reemerged in the last decades. In many situations, ensiling TMR has been a sustainable alternative to efficiently handle wet byproducts in ruminant diets. An ensiled TMR typically has a markedly higher aerobic stability than its respective fresh TMR. Ensiling a TMR increases ruminal protein degradability due to proteolysis during storage. An increase of feed efficiency by ruminants fed ensiled rations have been reported, due to the improved starch digestibility in TMR silages containing cereal grains. This manuscript brings an overview of the main nutrient transformations during the ensiling of TMR and their feeding value for ruminants.
