Palavras-chave: avaliação genética, classificação, correlação, herdabilidade, modelo animal Genotype x Environment Interaction in Growth Traits of Nellore Cattle of MatoGrosso do Sul ABSTRACT -The effect of genotype x environment interaction on body weight at birth (BW), weaning (W205), 12 (W365) and 18 (W550) months of age of Nellore cattle raised in the regions of Alto Taquari, Campo Grande and Pantanal, MS, Brazil, was studied. The data were analyzed for each region separately and for all regions together. Variance and covariance components and genetic parameters were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method, using an animal model that included the random additive direct effect, and the fixed effects of sex and contemporary group (herd, year, season and region of birth), and sires were ranked based on their breeding values (BV). The results showed that the additive direct and residual variances were different among regions. The heritability estimates ranged from 0.16 to 0.66 (BW), 0.36 to 0.59 (W205), 0.35 to 0.49 (W365) and 0.30 to 0.45 (W550), depending on the region. Pearson's correlation coefficients between BVs of sires, obtained for each pair of regions, showed means equal to 0.11 (BW), 0.38 (W205), 0.38 (W365) and 0.39 (W550). When the correlations were for the BVs obtained for each region with the BVs obtained for all regions together, the estimates were higher showing means equal to 0.80 (BW), 0.88 (W205), 0.88 (W365) and 0.87 (W550). Despite the high v...
Palavras-chave: bovinos de corte, longevidade de fêmeas, perímetro escrotal, peso, produtividade de fêmeas Heritabilities and Genetic Correlations of Male and Female Traits, in a Canchim BeefCattle Herd ABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to estimate the heritabilities and the genetic correlations of body weight (BW12) and scrotal circumference (SC12) of males at twelve months of age and culling age (DH, days in herd) of females, and number (NW10) and kilograms (KW10) of weaned calves produced by females up to ten years of age, in a Canchim (5/8 Charolais + 3/8 Zebu) beef cattle herd. Data were composed of 1370, 826, 826, 2726 and 1051 observations of DH, NW10, KW10, BW12 and SC12, respectively. The variance and covariance components were obtained by the bayesian method, with a statistical model that included, besides the additive direct and residual random effects, the fixed effects of year of birth for all traits, month of birth for BW12 and SC12, and the covariate age for SC12. The heritability estimates, obtained by the one-trait analyses, were equal to 0.38, 0.52, 0.24, 0.33 and 0.34 for BW12, SC12, DH, NW10 and KW10, respectively, indicating that all traits have enough genetic variability to show response to selection. The genetic correlations of DH (0.33 and 0.33, respectively), NW10 (0.38 and 0.30, respectively) and KW10 (0.61 and 0.41, respectively) with BW12 and SC12, obtained by the two-trait analyses, suggest that selection ...
The study reported here evaluated genotype × environment interaction in individual performance and progeny tests in beef cattle. Genetic parameters for final weight (FW), ADG, and scrotal circumference (SC) of 33,013 Nellore young bulls tested on pasture or in feedlots were analyzed. The posterior means (and highest posterior density interval with 90% of samples [HPD90]) of heritability for traits measured on pasture-raised and feedlot-raised animals were 0.44 (HPD90 = 0.40 to 0.48) and 0.50 (HPD90 = 0.43 to 0.56) for FW, 0.26 (HPD90 = 0.23 to 0.29) and 0.26 (HPD90 = 0.20 to 0.32) for ADG, and 0.53 (HPD90 = 0.48 to 0.59) and 0.65 (HPD90 = 0.55 to 0.74) for SC, respectively. The posterior means (and HPD90) of genetic correlations for FW, ADG, and SC on pasture and in feedlots were 0.75 (HPD90 = 0.66 to 0.87), 0.49 (HPD90 = 0.31 to 0.66), and 0.89 (HPD90 = 0.83 to 0.97), respectively. When the selection intensity was kept the same for both the environments, the greatest direct responses for FW and ADG were exhibited by the animals reared and selected in feedlots. The correlated responses relative to production on pasture and based on selection in feedlots were similar to the direct responses, whereas the correlated responses for production in feedlots and based on selection on pasture were lower than the direct responses. When the selection intensity on pasture was higher than the selection intensity in feedlots, the responses to direct selection were similar for both the environments and correlated responses obtained in feedlots by selection on pasture were similar to the direct responses in feedlots. Analyses of few or poor indicators of genotype × environment interaction result in incorrect interpretations of its existence and implications. The present work demonstrated that traits with lower heritability are more susceptible to genotype × environment interaction and that selection intensity plays an important role in the study of genotype × environment interaction in beef cattle.
Palavras-chave: bovinos de corte, longevidade de fêmeas, peso, produtividade de fêmeas ABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for body weights at weaning (PD), 12 months old (P12) and adult age (PAD), culling age (TPR, days in herd), number (ND10) and kilograms (QD10) of calves weaned up to ten years of age, total number (NDT) and total kilograms (QDT) of calves weaned during herd life, and kilograms of calves weaned per year in herd (QTPR) of Canchim (5/8 Charolais + 3/8 Zebu) females from one herd. Data consisted of 3,249, ,340 records of PD, P12, PAD, TPR, ND10, QD10, NDT, QDT and QTPR, respectively. Variance and covariance components were estimated by bivariate analyses between PD, P12 and PAD and other production traits using Bayesian inference. The models included the additive direct, permanent environmental and residual random effects and the fixed effects year and month of birth or calving, calving age and age of the animal, depending on the trait. QD10, QDT and QTPR of each female were obtained by adjusting the weaning weights of calves for year and month of birth, sex and age of cow. Average of heritability estimates were 0.38 (PD), 0.40 (P12), 0.54 (PAD), 0.22 (TPR), 0.22 (ND10), 0.24 (QD10), 0.23 (NDT), 0.23 (QDT) and 0.32 (QTPR), indicating genetic variability to obtain response by selection. Use of genetic markers can aid on the identification of animals with highest breeding values in beef cattle. The PIT1 gene codes for the Pit-1 transcription factor is essential for the activation of prolactin, growth hormone and PIT1 genes. This research is an investigation of the effect of PIT1-HinfI polymorphism on growth traits of 509 Canchim animals, from two lineages, GG1 and GG2. PIT1 genotypes were identified through PCR-RFLP. Genotype effect on phenotypic values for birth weight (BW), standardized weaning weight (W240), weight at 12 months of age (W365), and the average daily weight gain from birth to weaning (AGBW), and from weaning to 12 months of age (AGW12) were analyzed by the least squares method. Effects of the interaction between the animal's genetic group and PIT1 genotype for W240, AGBW and AGW12 were observed (P < 0.05). Differences between means of HinfI (-/-), HinfI (+/+) and HinfI (+/-) genotypes for W240 and AGBW were observed in GG2 (P < 0.05), revealing superiority of (-/-) genotype for those traits. Means for genotypes (+/+) and (+/-) for W240 and AGBW, did not differ from one another, suggesting a dominance effect of the HinfI (+) allele. The HinfI (-) allele had a favorable effect on W240 and AGBW in GG2, when present in homozygosis. The difference between PIT1 behavior observed in the two genetic groups may suggest the action of a quantitative trait locus linked to PIT1, segregating only in GG2 population.
