WstępWspółpraca uczelni z biznesem jest procesem współtworzenia innowacji, w którym transfer wiedzy i wyników badań jest rozumiany jako jedna z głównych misji uczelni 1 . Rozwój gospodarki opartej na wiedzy prowadzi do wzrostu znaczenia wartości niematerialnych i prawnych, m.in. w całkowitym kapitale przedsiębiorstwa. Chodzi tu o połączenie trzech zasadniczych obszarów aktywności: gospodarki, edukacji i nauki w sprawny system współdziałania. Źródłem wiedzy i kompetencji przyszłych kadr biznesu są uczelnie wyższe. Stąd też efektywna współpraca środowiska naukowego z otoczeniem gospodarczym staje się koniecznością.W Polsce poziom systemu transferu technologii i komercjalizacji wiedzy jest, niestety, niski. Poszczególne ogniwa systemu: biznes, nauka, jednostki B+R działają w izolacji, niewiele wiedzą nawzajem o swojej ofercie i potrzebach pozostałych członków systemu 3 . Grupa ekspercka BIOS rekomenduje rozszerzenie dotychczasowego modelu szkoły wyższej, by silniej kreować współpracę z przemysłem i pracodawcami 4 . Polskie ośrodki naukowe i badawcze powinny zintegrować system kompetencji i przepływ oferty do podmiotów rynkowych, podobnie
Biotechnology is a rapidly emerging domain that is impacting how we live and work daily. This paper delineates some of the major biotechnologies, their applications, and benefits to both societies and individuals. Challenges to commercialization to move biotech research from the lab to the marketplace are explored. The financial value of biotechnology is captured when the research breakthrough solves an economic societal challenge. The path is to commercialization is especially perilous for biotech due to its long lead timemeasured in decadesand costs to transform the ideas into an innovation. Additionally, issues of intellectual property, patenting and licensing in the biotech industry are probed. Caveats on biotech's growth rate are examined and future prospects are prognosticated.
The aim of this paper is to identify the barriers to the knowledge transfer and university research commercialization system in Poland on the basis of qualitative research of the 20 biggest Polish universities. The research revealed that there are three main groups of barriers referring to macro environment, university system and human factors. The results could help Polish government and universities to support effective processes of scientific research commercialization, build knowledge and competence in the Polish scientific and research centers. The article is the comparison analysis which can be taken into consideration by university managers in transforming economies 1 .

The purpose of the chapter is to present the concept of intellectual capital in knowledge intensive organisations -public universities. Recently, public universities have been increasingly undertaken intellectual capital management activities in order to face environmental pressures such as shortage of funds, students deficiency, and challenges connected with the globalisation of educational market. What is more, they ceased to be regarded only as centres of education and research, but also as entities which cooperate with business and other stakeholders in order to commercialise the research results. The chapter draws attention to the New Public Management influence on intellectual capital management, its advantages and strains. It also discusses the universities' intellectual capital structure (human, structural (internal) and relational) and its' measurement methods, such as the Austrian Wissenbilanz, the Observatory of European Universities ICU Report, and the
Intellectual Capital Maturity Model (ICMM).The intellectual capital is a prominent source of university's competitive advantage. The chapter presents the main sources of this advantage, as well as describes the way the university intellectual capital can be linked with its market value. It discusses the knowledge commercialisation process which generates intellectual capital in a university, providing it with not only scientific and educational value but also market value. In the chapter, the benefits of collaboration between universities and industry are presented. The universities-industry collaboration offers researchers the possibility to enhance the value of their intellectual capital by monetary or contextual research support, which contributes to their higher scholarly productivity. As for students, it allows them to gain work practice, learn to apply theoretical learnings in practice and assess business needs. Apart from motivation from the government and benefits for the both sides, there are also some barriers to successful collaboration between universities and industry, which are also discussed in the chapter. processes of its' creation and commercialization. They also refer to the third stage of intellectual capital research, which concentrates on how its measurement and reporting is used for the management purposes on various levels (?).
