La définition sémantique des noms dits atypiques ou non standard, tels quantité , fois , espace , odeur , couleur , action , etc., est loin d’aller de soi. En tant que noms dits généraux ou sommitaux, ils se caractérisent par un sens (très) abstrait, une sous-spécification et / ou sous-détermination sémantique indéniable, si bien que leur description sémantique pose de nombreux problèmes. L’objectif sera malgré tout d’approcher le statut sémantique d’un de ces noms atypiques, le nom chose . En partant de sa catégorie référentielle, nous mettrons au jour certaines de ses caractéristiques stables, parmi celles qui sont à l’œuvre dans les entreprises typologiques ( cf . les couples massif / comptable, forme intrinsèque / forme contingente, concret / abstrait, intensif / extensif, animé / non animé, etc.).

Parmi les noms de la langue française, il en est qui, assurément, sont atypiques. Quantité et nombre , par exemple. Il ne suffit toutefois pas de considérer ces noms comme non standard pour que leur identité soit assurée. L’objectif est donc d’avancer sur la voie de l’identification des noms quantité et nombre en en interrogeant les spécificités sémantico-référentielles et les principaux sites d’occurrences. Nous constituerons ainsi une base de données sur laquelle appuyer notre réflexion concernant la place de ces deux substantifs dans la catégorie nominale, d’une part, leur relation avec celle des noms généraux, d’autre part.

The aim of this article is to show that we can obtain interesting results in the domain of nominal classification even if we use only one criterion, in our case the spatial structure of localisation se trouver + SP locatif. Our study applies this test to all types of nouns (see, inter alia, mass, countable, abstract, concrete, property, perception nouns) in order to examine which are the best candidates that can be hosted by our target structure. The reader will find a fine description of every possibility or impossibility of use throughout eight "nominal sections" and an explanation for the different reasons of blocking is given in the conclusion. This "experience" may seem limited but it finally turns out to offer very useful information not only about nouns' semantics, but also about space semantics and the construction se trouver + SP locatif itself.

In this work, we will focus on some of the properties of the French noun of quantity. A few of the questions raised are the following : What is its ontological status, what is its meaning ? What are its sites of occurrences ? What is its position within the nominal category ? How is it located in regard to the substantives in general, and to the quantifiers in particular ? The different reflections carried out throughout this study, by pointing out that the noun of quantity is not a standard noun, will give some elements of answers to these questions.
