Objective: Understand the meaning, in hospital work, of hierarchical structures present in the organizational culture of Brazilian public hospitals. Methods: The corpus of research was originated in four theses and six dissertations, and was organized, analyzed and interpreted from the perspective of symbolic anthropology interpretation. Results: Hospitals copied the professional mechanistic bureaucracy and hierarchies, from these structures, produce meanings that indicate a fragmentation of relationships, professional disputes and separations, as well as conflicts and subversive behavior at work. Conclusion: The hierarchies in each of the bureaucracies created several clashes that disrupt the workers and their work processes. Reorientation strategies and awareness of the hierarchical boundaries should be studied so that the work is optimized. RESUmoObjetivou-se neste estudo exploratório--descritivo conhecer as crenças, influências e práticas que permeiam o autocuidado das mulheres no puerpério. Foram informantes quinze puérperas de Rio Grande--RS. Colheram-se os dados em setembro e outubro de 2010, com entrevistas semiestruturadas, realizadas entre quinze e trinta dias pós-parto. Adotou-se a análise temática para o tratamento dos dados. Fundamentadas no cuidado/autocuidado durante o puerpério, o qual provinha da orientação familiar realizada em âmbito doméstico, delinearam-se duas categorias: uma referente a restrições, aquilo que devia ser evitado por gerar malefícios; outra envolvendo incentivos, ou seja, práticas que traziam benefícios à puérpera ou ao recém-nascido. Este estudo mostra a importância dos profissionais terem consciência a respeito da quarentena, pois é uma herança cultural que ainda perdura nos dias atuais. The participants were fifteen puerperal women from Rio Grande/RS. Data collection was performed in September and October of 2010 using semi-structured interviews, performed between fifteen and thirty days postpartum. Thematic analysis was used. Two categories emerged regarding self-care during puerperium, which was performed based on the family guidance received at home. One referred to restrictions, or activities that should be avoided to prevent harm; the other involved encouragement, i.e., practices that promoted benefits to the puerperal woman or newborn. This study shows the importance of professionals being aware of the quarantine period, as it is a cultural heritage that remains in effect today. Resumo O estudo teve por objetivo compreender a percepção de estudantes do curso de Odontologia da Universidade Federal da Paraíba sobre a utilização do portfólio como um dos métodos de avaliação. Os dados referentes a 16 estudantes foram coletados em 2011 por meio da técnica do grupo focal e submetidos à análise de conteúdo. Definiram-se, então, as categorias temáticas: conceituação, papel do discente-docente, metodologias ativas, dificuldades na elaboração do portfólio e sugestões. Os estudantes compreendem o portfólio como instrumento de diálogo entre docentes e discentes, por meio dos relatos das vivências em grupo nos equipamentos sociais e reflexões individuais na construção de conceitos e aprofundamento teórico. Conclui-se que os estudantes percebem o portfólio como ferramenta potente e inovadora para a formação profissional, constituindo-se instrumento de acompanhamento do processo de ensino-aprendizagem, por ser dialógico, interativo, oportunizando uma aprendizagem ativa. AbstractThe study aimed to understand the perception Dentistry students at the Federal University of Paraíba have of the use of portfolios as one of the evaluation methods. Data were collected from 16 students in 2011 by means of the focus group technique and were analyzed based on content analysis. The themes were then defined: conceptualization, student-professor role, active methods, difficulties in preparing portfolios and suggestions. Students see portfolios as an instrument of dialog between professors and students through accounts of group experiences in the social equipment and individual reflections in the construction of concepts and theoretical deepening. It was concluded that students perceive the portfolio as a powerful, innovative tool for vocational training, serving to monitor the teaching--learning process for being dialogical, interactive, and providing opportunities for active learning.

Injuries caused by venomous animals reported by the agricultural workers from the municipality of Cuité, Curimataú region of Paraiba State, Northeast of Brazil, and the practices of folk medicine which they use to treat these cases were studied in this work from June to August 2010. The farmers studied aged from 11 to 90 years. The number of people who reported cases of injury by these animals in their families was high (89.3%). Scorpions, wasps, bees and snakes were the most cited and the extremities of the body (hands, feet, legs and head) were the most affected. The practice of folk medicine to treat these injuries includes various procedures ranging from ritualistic treatments, use of animals or parts of them, and some herbal preparations. The folk treatment was reported as effective by most of the workers injured (63.9%). Body parts of dead snakes are used in various zootherapic treatments. In the imaginary of the agricultural workers the venomous animals are considered hazardous (48.7%) or disgusting (11.3%), and several parts of such animals as the rattle, bee sting or snake leather are used as amulet. Several legends have also been reported about snakes, scorpions and bees. The need for educational activities that aim to clarify these workers about the dangers of such practices is urgent.

RESUMOObjetivo: O presente estudo teve como propósito verificar o conhecimento de médicos e enfermeiros, inseridos na Estratégia de Saúde da Família, no município de Patos, Paraíba, sobre a saúde bucal para crianças de 0 a 36 meses. Material e Métodos: O estudo foi do tipo transversal, observacional, adotando como instrumento de coleta de dados um questionário específico. A amostra foi composta por 63 profissionais, sendo 28 médicos e 35 enfermeiros. Após coletados, os dados foram trabalhados pela estatística descritiva e submetidos ao teste estatístico Exato de Fisher considerado significativo ao nível de 5% (p<0,05). Resultados: Acerca do conhecimento à prevenção em odontologia, 96,8% dos profissionais perceberam a cárie dentária como uma doença, que surge pela falta de higiene e dieta inadequada. Relataram não saber como é removido o biofilme dental em crianças de 0 a 36 meses (46%) e que o flúor serve para evitar a cárie (71,4%). 65,1% dos profissionais compreendem que a primeira visita ao dentista deve ser realizada antes do nascimento dos dentes e 76,2% disseram que o dente decíduo pode ser tratado. Observouse diferença estatisticamente significativa entre as variáveis "orientação sobre saúde bucal" e gênero (p=0,04), onde 11,1% do gênero masculino relataram não ter tido orientação quanto à saúde bucal. Conclusão: Conclui-se que existe uma fragilidade no conhecimento sobre saúde bucal, na primeira infância, o que torna importante a capacitação dessas classes para que o trabalho se torne mais integrado, com troca efetiva de saberes e práticas. ABSTRACT Objective:To verify the knowledge of physicians and nurses working in the Family Health Strategy in the city of Patos, PB, Brazil, in relation to the oral health of children aged 0 to 36 months. Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, observational study using a specific questionnaire for data collection. A total of 63 professionals (28 physicians and 35 nurses) were selected to compose the sample. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and then submitted to Fisher's exact test, with a 5% significance level (p<0.05).Results: As to their knowledge about preventive dentistry, 96.8% of the professionals considered dental caries as a disease resulting from poor oral hygiene and inadequate nutrition. In addition, 46% of them did not know how dental biofilm can be removed in children (0-36 months old) and 71.4% reported that fluoride might avoid dental caries. A total of 65.1% of the professionals knew that the first visit to the dentist should be done before the primary teeth are erupted; and 76.2% said that deciduous teeth can be treated. A statistically significant difference was observed between the variables "oral health orientation" and gender (p=0.04), in which 11.1% of males reported having not received oral health orientation.
