The focus of this double-blind randomized study was on evaluating the effect of an aqueous extract of Mastruz (Chenopodium ambrosioides L.) on the bone repair process in vivo. In total, 36 male Wistar rats were randomly selected for this study, and divided into 3 groups (n = 12): Group HS (Hemostatic Sponge), Group SM (Hemostatic Sponge with Mastruz) and Group BC (Blood Clot). In each animal, bone defects measuring 2 mm in diameter were performed in both tibias for placement of the substances. After 3 and 10 days, the animals were sacrificed, and the tissues were analyzed under an optical microscope relative to the following events: inflammatory infiltrate; necrosis; young fibroblasts; osteoclastic and osteoblastic activity; endosteal and periosteal bone formation; and bone repair. The results were assessed by using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (p < .05). Inflammatory infiltrate demonstrated difference between Groups SM and BC in the time interval of 3 days (p = .004); an event related to the presence of the fibrin sponge and liquid of the extract, which induced a foreign body initial reaction. The presence of young fibroblasts (p = .003), osteoclastic (p = .003), and osteoblastic (p = .020) activity was statistically significant between Groups HS and BC in the time interval of 10 days; performance was related to the presence of the sponge within bone. As regards injured bone tissue repair, Group SM demonstrated a higher level of regenerative capacity (p = 0.004), due to a larger quantities of endosteal and periosteal bone formation, demonstrated in Group SM. The aqueous extract of mastruz stimulated bone neoformation, presenting wound closure with bone tissue at the end of 10 days.
ABSTRACT Objective:To verify the knowledge of physicians and nurses working in the Family Health Strategy in the city of Patos, PB, Brazil, in relation to the oral health of children aged 0 to 36 months. Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, observational study using a specific questionnaire for data collection. A total of 63 professionals (28 physicians and 35 nurses) were selected to compose the sample. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and then submitted to Fisher's exact test, with a 5% significance level (p<0.05).Results: As to their knowledge about preventive dentistry, 96.8% of the professionals considered dental caries as a disease resulting from poor oral hygiene and inadequate nutrition. In addition, 46% of them did not know how dental biofilm can be removed in children (0-36 months old) and 71.4% reported that fluoride might avoid dental caries. A total of 65.1% of the professionals knew that the first visit to the dentist should be done before the primary teeth are erupted; and 76.2% said that deciduous teeth can be treated. A statistically significant difference was observed between the variables "oral health orientation" and gender (p=0.04), in which 11.1% of males reported having not received oral health orientation. Conclusion: There is a fragility in the knowledge of physicians and nurses on oral health in early childhood, which makes their training very impo...
The focus of this study was to test the hypothesis that there would be no difference between the biocompatibility of silicon dioxide nanofilms used as antimicrobial agents. Sixty male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups (n=15): Group C (Control,Polyethylene), Group AR (Acrylic Resin), Group NP (Acrylic Resin coated with NP-Liquid), Group BG (Acrylic Resin coated with Bacterlon). The animals were sacrificed with 7,15 and 30 days and tissues analyzed as regards the events of inflammatory infiltrate, edema, necrosis, granulation tissue, mutinucleated giant cells, fibroblasts and collagen. Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests was used (P<0.05). Intense inflammatory infiltrate was shown mainly in Groups BG and AR, with significant difference from Control Group in the time interval of 7days (P=0.004). Necrosis demonstrated significant difference between Group BG and Control Group (P<0.05) in the time intervals of 7 days. For collagen fibers, there was significant difference between the Control Group and Groups AR and BG in the time interval of 7 days (P=0.006), and between BG and Control Groups in the time intervals of 15 days (P=0.010). The hypothesis was rejected. Bacterlon demonstrated the lowest level, and NP-Liquid Glass the highest level of tissue compatibility, and best cell repair. The coating with NP-Liquid Glass was demonstrated to be highly promising for clinical use.
The objective of this article is to report a clinical case in which the diastema was closed in the anterosuperior region, through direct restoration in composite resin, emphasizing the conservative and current technique, in order to restore the patient's smile and self-esteem. Patient D. B. N., 24 years old, feoderma, female, attended the School Clinic reporting dissatisfaction regarding the color and space between his anterior teeth. Clinically, a diastema of approximately 1.5 mm was observed between elements 11 and 21. It was decided to use the technique of direct restoration in composite resin, due to its advantages of better cost-benefit, quick realization, minimal or null wear of the dental structure and reversible results when compared to the use of ceramics. Previously, dental whitening was performed in-office for the best smile esthetics. Diagnostic wax-up was used to predictability the results and for confection of a palatine silicone guide, which allowed the transfer of dental morphology and greater precision of the technique. Thus, following the restorative protocol judiciously, obtained the success of the technique used and the final result encompassing clinical aesthetic concepts and patient expectations.
There is a constant search for drugs to fight infections effectively. Herbal medicines are presented as options that, in addition to having great therapeutic potential, generally have low cost. Literature data show that rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) has antimicrobial activity. Thus, the objective of this work was, through the existing literature, to verify whether R. officinalis has therapeutic and antimicrobial properties in pathological conditions of the oral cavity, and can be used for treatments of mouth infections. In the present review, the databases used for screening were: Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO) and PubMED, using the following descriptors: "Rosemary" "Rosmarinus officinalis", "Antimicrobial action", "application in Dentistry", “Phytotherapy in Dentistry”, isolated or in combination, in Portuguese and English. The studies were analyzed according to the year of publication, publication period and results found. Among the researches evaluated, only 3 did not show significant results regarding their antimicrobial action. In other studies, it was found to be effective against fungi, bacteria, viral agents and to inhibit the formation of oral biofilms. Thus, the literature points to the effectiveness of R. officinalis as an antimicrobial in relation to fungi and pathogenic bacteria in the mouth, having a clinical application in the treatment and prevention of diseases of the oral cavity.
