Although the overall rate of complications associated with fractional laser skin resurfacing is much lower than with traditional ablative techniques, recent reports suggest that serious complications can develop. An appreciation of all of the complications associated with fractional laser skin resurfacing is important, especially given that many of them can be potentially prevented. The authors have indicated no significant interest with commercial supporters.
To study a picosecond 755-nm alexandrite laser for the removal of tattoos to confirm the efficacy of this therapy, focusing on the effect of therapy on the target lesion as well as the surrounding tissues and quantifying the number of necessary treatments. Design: Fifteen patients with tattoos were enrolled. Treatments were scheduled approximately 6Ϯ2 weeks apart. Standard photographs using 2-dimensional imaging were taken at baseline, before each treatment, and 1 month and 3 months after the last treatment.
NMSC incidence in Alberta has stabilized in women and declined in men. As 95-99% of NMSC occurs in patients aged 40 years or older, and with its increased frequency in traditionally clothed areas, the authors recommend regular complete skin examinations starting at 40 years of age.
An appreciation of the adverse cutaneous consequences of smoking is important. Dermatologists can play an integral role in promoting smoking cessation by providing expert opinion and educating the public on the deleterious effects of smoking on the skin.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacillus that is most frequently associated with opportunistic infection, but which can also present in the otherwise healthy patient. The range of P. aeruginosa infections varies from localized infections of the skin to life-threatening systemic disease. Many P. aeruginosa infections are marked by characteristic cutaneous manifestations. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the current knowledge of cutaneous manifestations of P. aeruginosa infection with specific emphasis on clinical features and management. The ability of P. aeruginosa to rapidly acquire antibacterial resistance is an increasingly well recognized phenomenon, and the correct application of antipseudomonal therapy is therefore of the utmost importance. A detailed discussion of currently available anti-pseudomonal agents is included, and the benefits of antimicrobial combination therapy versus monotherapy are explored. Rapid clinical recognition of P. aeruginosa infection aided by the identification of characteristic cutaneous manifestations can play a critical role in the successful management of potentially life-threatening disease.
Nails are underutilized as diagnostic tools, despite being involved in many dermatologic conditions. This paper explores new concepts in the treatment of median nail dystrophy (MND), onychomycosis, and the nail pathology of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). A Pubmed database literature search was conducted for MND treatment, onychomycosis treatment, and HFMD nail pathology. Only papers published after January 2008 were reviewed. The results showed that 0.1% tacrolimus ointment can be an effective treatment for MND. Early studies on laser therapy indicate that it is a safe and efficacious treatment option for onychomycosis, compared to conventional oral antifungal agents. Vicks VapoRub (The Proctor & Gamble Company, Cincinnati, OH) is effective against onychomycosis and is a reasonable option in patients who choose to forgo conventional treatments. Lastly, there is evidence to support a correlation between HFMD and onychomadesis.
The 40U dose of daxibotulinumtoxinA was well tolerated (e.g., absence of ptosis) and had the most favorable risk: benefit profile. Compared with 20U onabotulinumtoxinA, it exhibited a significantly greater response rate and a significantly longer duration of response (median of 24 weeks vs 19 weeks; p = .030).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
