AbstractPsychiatric comorbidities in abstinent drug addict in a protected environment. The objective of this research was to determine the frequency of psychiatric comorbidity, using Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, in different groups of former drug addicts, classified according to the type of drug used: (1) control group (n = 37), (2) ex-users of alcohol only (n = 8), (3) former users of alcohol, marijuana and crack /cocaine (n = 24), and (4) ex-poly drug users (n = 25), in other words, individuals who use various types of drugs without a clear drug of choice. Participants comprised 94 men, mean age 30.41 years (SD = 9.88). The withdrawal period varied between 30 and 240 days. Most participants had little schooling and were single. The results showed a higher incidence of psychopathology and suicide risk in the groups formed by patients with a history of multiple substance use, suggesting the importance of evaluation of other disorders associated with addiction.
To compare the performance of seven boys with a confirmed diagnosis of ADHD (G1) and 14 healthy controls (G2) in neuropsychological tasks. Method: G1 and G2 were matched by gender, age and educational level. They were assessed through attentional and executive tasks (verbal fluency and narrative discourse from MAC Battery, Bells Testchildren's version, Number Random Generation, Go-no Go and auditory N-Back). results: There were remarkable differences between groups for sustained focused attention, working memory, self-monitoring, initiation and inhibition. Conclusion: Contributions for incipient comprehension of relationships among cognitive components in ADHD patients could be identified.
Verbal fl uency tasks are widely used in (clinical) neuropsychology to evaluate components of executive functioning and lexical-semantic processing (linguistic and semantic memory). Performance in those tasks may be affected by several variables, such as age, education and diseases. This study investigated whether aging, education, reading and writing frequency, performance in semantic judgment tasks and depression symptoms predict the performance in unconstrained, phonemic and semantic fl uency tasks. This study sample comprised 260 healthy adults aged 19 to 75 years old. The Pearson correlation coeffi cient and multiple regression models were used for data analysis. The variables under analysis were associated in different ways and had different levels of contribution according to the type of verbal fl uency task. Education had the greatest effect on verbal fl uency tasks. There was a greater effect of age on semantic fl uency than on phonemic tasks. The semantic judgment tasks predicted the verbal fl uency performance alone or in combination with other variables. These fi ndings corroborate the importance of education in cognition supporting the hypothesis of a cognitive reserve and confi rming the contribution of lexical-semantic processing to verbal fl uency. Keywords: Verbal fl uency, age, education, reading and writing habits, depression, semantic judgment.
Biological and cultural factors have been found to have a significant influence on cognitive development and performance in neuropsychological instruments such as verbal fluency tasks (VFT). Variations of traditional VFT, involving unconstrained word production and increased retrieval times, may provide further data regarding the executive, attentional, mnemonic, and linguistic abilities involved in VFT. As such, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of age and school type on the performance of 6- to 12-year-old children in unconstrained, phonemic, and semantic VFT. The VFT were administered to 460 participants. The effects of age and school type on verbal fluency (VF) performance were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance, followed by Bonferroni post-hoc tests (p ≤ .05). A repeated-measures analysis was also used to evaluate VF performance over time (p ≤ .05). Main effects of age and school type were identified on all measures (effect sizes ranged from .05 to .32, p ≤ .05). VF scores increased with age and were higher among private school students. The influence of age on VFT may be associated with the development of executive functions. The impact of type of school on VF performance may be explained by the greater availability of cognitive stimulation (semantic knowledge) provided by private schools and families with better socioeconomic levels.
